I’m a fairly new rider and bought a GT Karakoram 3.0 29er Bike – 2011, but after going out a couple times I really want to convert to disc brakes. Is this possible with this model of bike and what do I need to make this happen? My current specs are:
Fork: Suntour XCT, 100mm travel
Rim Brakes: Tektro linear-pull
Brake Levers: Tektro
Crankset: Suntour XCT, 42/32/22Thanks

It appears that bike has the tabs for mounting disc brakes. (Which makes sense since the Karakoram 1.0 and 2.0 both come with disc brakes)
Check out the Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes as an upgrade. They are quite affordable.

How do you go about deciding on the size of the brakes?

That bike will be fine with 160mm rotors, but 185mm front and 160mm rear would also be nice.
