If you haven’t already heard, the city of Roswell is considering Big Creek Park for the location of a new fire station. Here’s a link to an article in the AJC:
      http://www.ajc.com/news/north-fulton/ro … 36378.html

The article also mentions a swimming complex that’s proposed for the site (that project is still a long way off). RAMBO folks aren’t happy with either proposal for obvious reasons…

I started riding the Big Creek area about 10 years ago before it was even a park (we used to call it Mansell) so it’s interesting to see how far things have come since then. I always figured development would knock the trails out some day – but I didn’t figure it would be after the trails were legitimized!

Oh that Roswell….I was thinking NM. 😏

    • #93281

Yeah I had heard it was a YMCA? But I guess not. That’s really sad because big creek is such a unique place, with one-of-a-kind downhilling, freeriding, and dirt jumping for here in Georgia.

Any word on what we can do to stop this?

Are there any copies of the actual plot proposed? The article mentions a 3 acre area being looked at but that amount of land for a fire station sounds like major overkill. I can’t imagine a station needing that much room. A normal sized station would fit on three quarters of an acre of land.

Not that it’s ideal for mountain bikers, but there is plenty of room to put a fire station and still maintain those trails IF they construct it toward the end of the gravel path and not at the entrance. Will be interesting to see what happens. This is a wonderful gem of a place inside the city.

A firestation would fit in the upper parking area if need be. The site is 159 acres so a firestation would be not take major land. A swimming area probably would not work due to the area backing up to a flood plain. Call EPA! Jere Wood is the Mayor of Roswell and is a cyclist so some support can come from him. Reduced access to the Greenway that is co-owned by Alpharetta and Roswell will also be an issue. Who knows? Money’s Short, Times are Hard, So here’s your Freaking Christmas Card! There are a bunch of rich people that use the walking trails as well and they can’t be deprived. Fingers crossed. 😄 Later,

Here’s a post from the RAMBA Google Group:

Many of you have heard through other media that Big Creek is
threatened with development: the Roswell Fire Department wants to put
a Station there and the City is considering a proposed YMCA along the
frontage–a total of 13+ acres and 500+ feet of depth from Old Alabama
Rd. The month of January will be a critical one for the future of Big
Creek and its trails. Here’s what you can do to help:

      1) If you LIVE in Roswell, contact the Mayor, your Council member and
the Director of the Recreation and Parks Department and tell them that
you are against ANY development of Big Creek Park.

      2) If you WORK in Roswell, contact the Mayor and all Council members
as well the as the Recreation and Parks Director and let them know you
are employed in Roswell and are park user and spend time and money in
      Roswell because Big Creek.

      3) If you are just a Non-Roswell park user, contact the Mayor, Council
members and the Director and let them know you travel to Roswell and
spend your dollars here because of Big Creek Park and the trails.

      Recreation and Parks Staff
      Director Joe Glover
      [email protected]

      Asst. Director Morgan Rodgers

Important dates—please attend these meetings and support Big Creek.

      • January 24 – City Council Meeting
7PM, Roswell City Hall, Council Chambers

      • January 27, 2011 – Recreation and Parks Commission Meeting
7PM, Roswell City Hall, Room 220

      • January 31 – From the City’s website: “The fifth Monday, when it
occurs, is an Open Forum meeting
where citizens may address the Mayor and Council on any concern.”
7PM, Roswell City Hall, Council Chambers

Bob Grieco has calculated that the proposed fire station plan requires
slightly less than 3 acres and 1/3 of the frontage on Old Alabama Rd.
Although RAMBO and the Recreation and Parks Department could re-route
the mountain-bike trail and walking path around the fire station, the
issue of the proposed YMCA at Big Creek remains unresolved and the
greatest threat. The YMCA’s original proposal asked the City for 7-8
acres but this was subsequently increased to 10-12 acres—for no
publicly-expressed reason. If the Council gives its consent—with the
Mayor’s assent—the impact on the riding and walking trails of Big
Creek will be measured in miles, not feet.

I’ve ridden with Jere Wood, the mayor.

      Good guy. Good rider.

I posted this on another topic on the forum but this is straight from the horses mouth.

As a fellow mountain biker, I appreciate your support for the Big Creek Mountain Bike Park. There are no plans to close down the entire trail. The Council is only considering closing down those areas adjacent to Old Alabama Road. I share your opposition to this proposal.

      Hey man,

Thanks for clarifying this. I was kind of sketched out when I heard people claiming big creek was going to be shut down, I thought "surely not, that place is WAY too popular!"

No worries Goo, It is Roswell Alpharetta Mountain Bike Orgization. Since Rowsell and Alpharetta are both cities with different governments the area is safe because when was the last time two different government agencies ever agreed on anything. Maybe I should apply for oil drilling rights inside the area and it will illeage to build anything. If we used Crisco or olive oil on our chains we would be good. MTB bikes could help run off all the Deer in the area with their poop’n pee and methane. A public service for sure. LOL 😄 Later,
