Buy older used bike or buy new?

I’ve just gotten into mountain biking and bought a 2015 cannondale trail sl 29 ss from my uncle but i have decided it is not suited for what i want to do, so i am planning on getting a different bike but i dont know if it would be better to bet this bike -https://m.pinkbike.com/buysell/3162231/

or if it would be better to get a new hardtail. My budget is around $800-$1000 and im going to be doing some rough trails (mostly rock gardens) and some medium sized jumps and drops. I appreciate any feedback!

Offer them $650 (plus shipping) and ride the hell out of it. It’s not worth putting any more money into upgrades (due to its age), but you should have a lot of fun with it.
