Hey man, a great spot to stay that’s actually outside of Roanoke a bit but close to some good trails is Wilderness Adventure. I wrote about them in this article: http://www.singletracks.com/blog/uncate … h-and-eat/
Here are my other articles from my Roanoke trip last fall, but there are definitely more trails in the area that I didn’t ride:

http://www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-tr … the-rough/I also rode at Pandapas Pond, but I didn’t write an article about it. Still a good trail system, though: http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … rails.html

Like MtbGreg1 says the Wilderness Adventure lodge is great, especially if you have a group.
Locally this place gets good reps from folks that have stayed there. Colony House Motor Lodge is clean and relatively inexpensive from what I hear. http://www.colonyhousemotorlodge.com/
This place gets mixed reviews, but I am listing it because it is extremely convenient. Located right off of I-81 you can access all of your destinations easily from this spot. It is one floor with your own door (bike friendly). Most motels nowadays have a cental entrance way and are not that bike friendly.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review … ginia.htmlRodeway Inn and Days Inn (Civic Center, see link below) are a couple of other options. Nothing special about either (I have stayed at both) but they are close to downtown if you are interested in partaking of food or drink downtown. There is a pretty descent bar and restaurant district downtown.
Some other options
http://www.travelodge.com/hotels/virgin … ch-resultsThe Ramada Inn is convenient also as it is right on the Roanoke River Greenway
http://www.ramada.com/hotels/virginia/r … l-overviewThe Days Inn at Salem would also be convenient to I-81 and trails in the area.
http://www.daysinn.com/hotels/virginia/ … -inn-salemTrail systems in the area that are easy for a visitor to navigate would be:
Carvins Cove (Salem/Catawba) http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … ystem.html
Explore Park (Blue Ridge Parkway Roanoke) http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … -park.html
Pandapas Pond (Blacksburg) http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … rails.html
Douthat State Park (Clifton Forge) http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … -park.html One of my favorites, ranked difficult mainly for the climbing involvedMill Mountain, right in Roanoke is one of my favorites for a 2 hour ride. http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … rails.html It is a little more difficult to navigate than the others. I ride it all the time and would be willing to guide you after 5 PM during the workweek (if you are OK with old, slow, non Spanish speaking rider).
Candlers mountain in Lynchburg has a lot of trails but supposedly is pretty hard to navigate – I have not ridden there. http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … ntain.html
Dragons Back is not too hard to navigate if you are in to gnar. http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails … -back.html Hike-a-bike is part of the deal.
Lots of other rides in the area on George Washington and Jefferson National Forest but most of those would be better with a guide. Many of those trails are poorly marked. The Harrisonburg area has a ton of national forest trails also if you want to travel a couple of hours north.
Bike shops
East Coasters (Trek, Salsa) http://eastcoasters.com/
Just the Right Gear (Santa Cruz, Kona) http://justtherightgear.com/
Cardinal (Giant, Specialized) http://www.cardinalbicycle.com/
UnderDog http://www.underdogbikesva.com/
Starlight http://www.starlightbikes.com/Sorry if I missed any shops, these are the ones I am familiar with. There is a shop right on Jefferson Street downtown that might be able to help you out in a pinch too, but I cannot remember the name.
