Hello all! I am interested in joining the mountain biking community because my brother and i want to get into mountain biking. I am unsure on what type of bike I should buy. I have looked around and haven’t really found one that caught my eye. I’m thinking of looking into a XC bike that has a hardtail frame. The first one I found was this…

As well as the other one…

      And this one…

Are these good bikes? Or should I try and look elswhere. I’m 5’10" and about 140 lbs by the way. Thanks for all your help in advance! 😃

      Welcome to Singletracks.

Ahhh, the age old question. You are going to find as many opinions as users, so it comes down to doing your research, figuring out your budget and what you really want in a first bike, and test riding as many bikes as possible.

If your brother is an experienced rider, he should be able to provide good guidance. Btw, neither of the two bikes you linked have disc brakes. And one of them is a woman’s bike. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Especially if you are a woman.

      Good luck.

What kind of a budget do you have to work with, Kiel?

The first thing to consider when thinking about purchasing a MTB is your budget. Secondly, you have to determine the type of MTN biking you’ll be doing the majority of the time. This information should lead you to the appropriate type of MTB.

The last, but certainly not the least thing to consider, is the fit and the correct frame size for yourself. Just because you fit a 16" frame on a Trek MTB, doesn’t mean that a 16" Giant frame will suit you. Therefore, you absolutely must test ride any bike for about 10-20 minutes, prior to making any final purchase.

Also, somewhere in the middle of all of these important things to consider, there are groupset levels of components that you must consider, as well.

Shimano hierarchy goes like the following:

      XTR > Deore XT > SLX > Deore LX > Deore > Alivio > Acera > Altus > Tourney > Moose Turds

Sram hierarcy goes like the following:

      XX > X0 > X9 > X7 > X5 > X4 > X3 > Bear Scat
