According to Sheldon Brown’s site the most critical adjustment of a front derailleur is its attachment to the bicycle frame. He then goes on to say that its location is determined by the outside chain ring.
He also states that proper chain length is determined using your largest chain ring up front and your largest cog on the rear.
So my question to you is this, if you remove your largest chain ring and add a bashgaurd, do you shorten your chain and move (lower) your front derailleur?
Or do you say screw it – I’m going riding?

shorten the chain, leave the derailleur in place and adjust the H and L screws so it won’t try to shift to the now non-existent outer cog.

My bike was shifting fine beforehand so when I added the bashguard I didn’t adjust a thing.
