Took my 7 year old boy down some of the atv trails on my farm. It was simply awsome. There is a pretty steep run about a quarter mile down to a creek crossing. He started out behind me and I told him to make sure he used his brakes. He came flying up behind me went to pass me and hung my pedal. We both wound up in the dirt in a heap of bicycles. The awsome part was after a few tears he was ready to finish the hill down to the creek. After we crossed the creek we pushed our bikes up the hill back to the house while talking about the ride we just had. Therre is nothing better in the world than to have your son tell you he is having the best day of his life.

That’s a pretty cool story. Reminds me of my dad taking me out to do "guy stuff" when I was little. I was a bit clumsy and always got some new bump or bruise and Dad would make a big deal about how "cool" scars were until I was actually proud to have been scraped, cut, bruised, road rashed, etc. We’d come home and my mom would have this "did you try to kill the boy" look on her face. I remeber one time I even told her to ‘quit worrying about it, Dad told me that he was helping me out because "chicks dig scars".’ Good times. 😀 Makes me want to go borrow my neighbor’s kids and take them out for a spin. Then bring them home and drop them back off with their parents so they can handle feeding them. 😉

Thats awsome I always loved going for bike rides with my dad, well step dad, he’s been in my life since I was about 5 and he treats me like I’m his biological son, so he IS my dad.

Gosh, that story makes me excited. I’ve got a 20 month old daughter that I’m raising to be quite a daredevil already. I can’t wait until she’s old enough to hit the trail with me. The girl was 2 pounds when she was born (surprised my wife & I 3 months early), and to see her running around like a banshee right now, and think of her hitting the trails with me when she’s older…it’s hard to wait. Do you think they make mountain training wheels? 😃

Very cool trussman. I’ve been to the LBS twice this week, and both times found myself checking out the Trek Jet 20s they had in stock. They are pretty expensive bikes compared to the typical dept store bike, but if my boy is serious about it I don’t mind upgrading his old bike (which is too heavy and awkward for him).

Don’t forget to check Craigslist and eBay for kids’ mountain bikes. They tend to grow out of them fast and you can pick up a barely used (real) one for $100-$200.

My daughter is on her second Specialized Hotrock and it’s a fantastic bike.
Also, I am 5′ 8" and 200 lbs and I can ride both her old 20" and her current 24" without breaking anything, much to her amusement.

My boy will be 8 next month and he rides a 03′ 24" Specialzed Hotrock I bought at goodwill for $12. I added a new RST fork I bought on ebay for $20 and I had to oil the chain and change the tubes, thats it. The bike sold new for $300. Look around the pawn shops, goodwill, salvation army, etc. they usually dont know the difference between a walmart bike and a bike shop bike and price them all the same.

On another note, I have to start looking for a 26" wheeled bike with a 13" or 14" frame now since he is already out growing the hotrock… If you decide to buy new look at TREK since they have a trade in program designed for growing kids where you can at least trade the old bike in.

Have you looked into the Specialized Hotrocks fleetwood? They are great little MTB’s and they make them in all kid sizes. They are built tough, light (compared to other kids MTB’s), come with good components, and at a good fair price. Not a low as Wally World bikes, but for a non-department store bike with a great warranty and customer service, you can’t go wrong (nothing against Wally World). Check it out:

I was going to go with the Hotrock, but being my sons very developing FR skills, I chose to go with a more versatile FR MTB.[/quote:2253coz6]

I have looked at those online, but thanks for the recommendation. My LBS doesn’t currently have anything but Treks in stock (in 20 inchers), so I haven’t seen them in person.

That’s awesome, and funny, because today we drove by Goodwill and there were a bunch of bikes sitting out front. I mentioned to my wife that I need to go by and see what they have, and that they might not even know it if they happened to get a "bike shop" bike.

Thanks for the info on the Trek bikes. I wasn’t aware of that.

I’m having trouble teaching my 7 year old daughter to ride a 2 wheeler. Can’t wait until she can join me on the trails. Guess that’s the difference between girls and boys. first time she fell, she was done. Now it’s all but impossible to even get her out to try to learn.
Saw a guy with his 9 year old daughter and 10-11 year old son on the trail last weekend. Thought it was great!

My daughter was riding down 12-16" ledge drops at 7 on her Specialized Hotrock.

Her sister on the other hand won’t even go off the pavement. Ever…

      Well, That’s awesome…
Hopefully my girl will be at least riding in the dirt by the end of the summer.

Well. I reached my goal. My daughter is riding on two wheels, and I even got an awesome deal on a Gary Fisher 24" Tyro mountainbike.
We’re meeting some friends tonight at the local trail, and we’re going to take an easy ride on the doubetrack, and maybe a very short easy section of singletrack.
Need to get some pics to post in the family and kids riding picture post.
