Up here in Alaska I have a moose or other wild life sighting on almost every ride and I’ve had a couple close calls with our furry friends.
One day I was coming down a local trail (STA Trails) and rounded a banked curve hauling butt. As soon as I came out of the curve there was the biggest Bull Moose I’ve ever seen, maybe twenty feet in front of me straddling the trail. I slammed on my brakes as hard as I could and laid the bike down. The sound of my tires trying to get traction was enough to spook him and he jumped off the trail but not fast enough, my helmet hit his ankle right as I slid past where he had meen standing. Luckily he just kept walking.
There was another time, a couple of years ago, a buddy and I were ridding Johnston Pass Trail (this is a true wilderness trail miles from anywhere). We stopped for some water about five miles in, I looked back down the trail as I drank and noticed two black faces looking at us from the woods about thirty feet away. We quickly got back on our bikes and took off, the two black bears followed us for about a mile, trotting behind us on the trail and they finally got bored and disappeared into the woods.
