In case you hadn’t heard, Colorado is pretty much nailing the mountain biking game.

If you doubt it, even for a second, just make your way to Vail Pass. It’s from there that you can launch your assault on one of the more fun rides I’ve done lately: the Two Elk Trail.

You start by climbing several miles of jeep road until you reach the breathtaking 360-degree views from Top of the World. The climb is a chore – to say the least – but after that it gets fun.

From Top of the World, all the way down to the town of Minturn, you’ll drop over 3,000 feet in roughly ten miles. At first, it’s steep and technical. Rocks litter the trail and roots criss-cross in tangled masses. Soon, though, you’ll pop out on the backside of Vail Ski Resort where you can kick it into high gear and start railing. Although you’ll hit some techy sections along the way, there’s plenty of grin-inducing flow to keep you happy and wanting to come back for more.
