  • in reply to: Body Armor Over or Under Jersey? #78241

I used to Race BMX and my dad insisted I wear a chest protector after we saw a kids collar bone and sternum meet another racers bar end atvery high rate of speed….anyhow. The First one I had was the very rigid very bulkt Motorcross type proctector (sorta looks like football shoulder pads) and I wore it on the outside of the jersey just so I could easily take it off because it was bulky and uncomfortable. Now I had the more modern version after which is what I’m assuming you’re talking about the more for the lack of a better word fluid stuff that isn’t just pieces of hard plastic linked together with nylon webbing like the stuff Six One Six is putting out I liked wearing this more organic feeling body armor under the jersey..and so did my sponsor.

Ride it, Love it and if it breaks you’ll know that sucker needs the upgrade.

find a way to swap those Hayes onto the Cannondale and take it! haha

I personally think you can’t get any better that SRAM
and although TruVativ makes good stuff I used to run FSA on my BMX rides and they make BOMBER components

in reply to: Clipless recommendations? #77682

I’m leaning towards the Crank Bros. They make little platforms that have cleats on the bottom to clip into your pedals.

Thanks for the heads up on the Shimanos I was looking at those as well.

Bulletproof tires, handlebar mounts for a 50 cal., a butt-ton of armor plating and…..shiny shiny tastles.

Hydration pack, as long as I do up the lumbar and sturnum straps I’m good to go.

I was on a riding trip in St. George Utah this past November and I got down there without my beloved Smiths. while in a LBS I found these neat glasses they were half the price of everything else so i bought them to get me through the trip. These Glasses are a company called Tifosi optics. The frames are rubberized and the lenses are interchangable for different tints and even Anti fog. They cost me forty or fifty dollars and I haven’t wore my $150 smiths since.

edit: I just realized Devin suggested Tifosi’s too. Sorry for the redundancy everyone.

My new replacements for my older & wore out five.ten DH high impact shoes (one brand of the many five.ten impacts DH/FR shoes):

The same but showing the bottom of them:

Five Tens will stick to anything. They use Stealth Rubber which was invented and is still tested in their biggest fieid, Rock Climbing shoes. (the only climbing shoes i will ever wear) but the friction works on a molecular level they make shoes out of stealth to hold friction when wet and when they’re totally underwater. So If you’re not clipping in they’d probably be a great way to go.

    Hey Zombi…
I’ve heard of one guy towing a trailer with all his supplies (Food, water, shelter, etc.) and he did the trail in one day! I know, huh?
We’re planning a full day before the ride of just driving to different spots along the trail and setting up our own drop points, how we’ll secure things so they don’t get snagged by animals or other riders is another question…but once we’ve got things set up we’ll just drive back to the start and go from there.
From what I know, typically this ride is done with large groups over 5-6 days with support vans that meet you at campsites every evening with all of the supplies you’ll need, mostly water, which is non-existent along the trail.

you can do it in a day?! crazy. yeah i’ve just heard of the multiple day excursions. One day sounds much more plausible for unsupported. Have fun!

I have a Camelbak Trail Blazer with the 100 oz bladder. Like Trek i wasn’t really into the trend of the bladder paks until I bought this one. I don’t know how I lived without it. I think it’s more for day hikes but i love it, it feels tiny but holds a ton of crap.

I bought my Ex-girlfriend an REI cold weather one with an insulated tube for like forty bucks and we broke up before I got it here so i used it the other day and its really nice too haha but i like my old pal camel best.

p.s. REI is closing these babies out for fifty bucks if you’re looking for a Hyrdo pack!

in reply to: MTB Racing Classifications and Types??? #77408

there’s alot of things to process and things are done different ways and called different things.

as far as i know Gravity or Gravity assisted is just what they call Downhill pretty much anywhere besides the states. I also know its call gravity in the latin countries where they get all suited up in aerodynamic leathers and go a million miles an hour down the side of a volcano haha. The one I found interesting and they do it at NATS at Deer Valley and i’m sure all over are the down hill Chainless races where that really take the chain off and its nothing but gravity getting you there.

as far as XC goes i’m not so sure I know the longer races are called Enduros or Marathons but its pretty much XC riding. Theres also the Super D which is a mix of XC and DH and which is usually the fun run for everyone.

Freeride is a little weird. Its more a test of skill and style. the corses have cliffs , ramps, crazy jumps whatever they want to throw at these crazy guys. the Objective is pretty much to get down the hill smoothly or at the very least in one piece. I think the route you pick to get down is pretty critical to points and sometimes they may be timed but I think its usually about style and how easily you can get down.

4x, I think the call it moutaincross abroad. Is quite similar to BMX or motorcross. It starts with four riders (thus the 4x) and they start at a gate like BMX and race through a track i’ve heard of it head to head but i think its usually one rider at a time and they time it the fastest one wins obviously and like BMX or MX they top half of each moto (or heat) moves on until there’s on man standing.

Hope that helps and I hope someone will correct me if any of this is wrong.

    now lets hit the trails!

sorry I can’t be of any help but i’m quite interested in this adventure of yours. Sounds brutal! what gear are you guys packing and how do you plan to carry it all?! sorry to be a bother it just sounds really rad.

If I wasn’t in the city of Rocks climbing I’d totally meet you down there. My suggestion is go to Red Rock cycle get the map talk to the guys there and you’ll be set. some sections are a bit confusing but theres enough signs and other riders you should be fine on your own.

otherwise good luck finding a guide!

    in reply to: Helmets #77381

Bern makes Skateboard/Bike helmets exactly like them. They have a huge catalog of different lids. They’re amazing helmets too. I have a mate who skateboards for them they’re just a cool company.

here’s just one place i found it.

These guys make alot of cool stuff I wear their 3/4 pants that have snap in padded lyrca. they also make full length pants and a variety of baggies. All with padded lyrca liners. They make alot of nice outerwear too.

What kind of Jacket were you looking for? Softshell? shell with layers?

in reply to: What’s in your pack? #75399

a good pack trick i learned on a two week backpacking excursion is put the heaviest stuff in the middle extra clothes jackets and such in the bottom and everything else on top. also if your pack doesn’t have a lumbar strap i would suggest if you can buying or or just modifying the one you have i actually put on a waste/lumbar strap on some climbing gear this week I went and bought a 2" wide piece of nylon webbing and just one of those buckles where you push the prongs in. (did it for under five bucks) that will make tons of difference and allows you to distribute the weight differently pending on how tight it is and giving your shoulders a rest. also its nice on your bike keeps the pack from flopping around.
hopefully you can figure something out to help you enjoy the ride better. good luck!

in reply to: Fellow MTBers lend me your suggestions #75919

sounds like good times, I used to ride with my dad but he can’t ride as much since his total knee replacement a few years ago. hahah I wouldn’t say without fear its a strange sport to take up for someone who used to be morbidly afraid of heights (couple sky dives takes care of that) but just like MTBing its just that continual search for the Ulitimate Natural High and getting out in Mother E.

Have Fun on those Toasty warm trails! Hope to make it out that way one day.

in reply to: Fellow MTBers lend me your suggestions #75918

sounds like a blast and also sounds like I need to winter in those parts haha.

I’m actually headed back down to Southen Utah Monday and Riding into some Climbing getting some action in both worlds.

    What bikes are you buying?

in reply to: Fellow MTBers lend me your suggestions #75917

    Thanks Mongoose! how are you?

I’ve been guiding Ice Climbs for the past few months and Internet connection has been limited.

in reply to: Fellow MTBers lend me your suggestions #75916

Thanks Leppah I’m always down that way, (i’m from Utah) so i’ll have to go talk to them. Though I can’t buy a new one for awhile as I just bought a motorcycle.
