Thanks for the input…
I’m leaning towards a new 2013. And buying locally as opposed to eBay or other online dealer.
Here’s what seems to me a hard to beat deal, a 2013 Trek Fuel EX8 in my size for $2100, from a very reputable LBS:

This 2013 Fuel has 130mm travel front and rear, XT rear derailleur and XLS everywhere else.
I see a ton of these on the Front Range trails…Looks great. I like the powder coat.
Just read your blog post. Cool article. I used to live in CB in the early 90’s and worked snowmaking for a few seasons. I guess it’s historically not too unusual to still be waiting for coverage in early Dec. Keep the faith; it’s coming soon. Until then I guess biking is the best thing to do!
Here in the Front Range, we’re still riding ALL trails in summer conditions…"ColoradoTrail" wrote…Then backtrack on the CT all the way home. Double bonus!
Yeah! That would be epic!
Thanks, I had the feeling it would be better not to change chainrings. Also wondering if too big a difference in chainrings could make it harder to shift back up into the larger one?
And @mtbgreg1, I may be mistaken about my SRAM x5. I think I just assumed it was "short cage" because it looks so much shorter than any rear derailleur I’ve had before. I love it btw; it feels so positive when it clanks out a gear change!
Again, thanks you guys for advice…
