  • in reply to: building a new wheel set #117033

    here is some information.
i ride 2012 rumblefish, all shimano xt and the factory bontranger wheels. this is where i want to make the real upgrade.
for the most part i spend most of my time riding wisconsin trails and some of the local trails in illinois. on average i like to do between 15-30 mile rides and i try to push the limits of what the trails offer.
im not too worried about a budget so i will be able to consider many options, but i really like the king hubs to start my build. i’ve learned through my present wheels and test riding other bikes that i want the upgrade. plus i wont lie, i’d love to have a badass set of wheells that i can trust.

Ultimately, advice is only just that, advice. So here goes. The Rumblefish is my first 29er, and after riding 26ers I couldn’t be happier with the decision to go 29!! At 5’7" you will really need to get the feel for a 29er. But, because I’m 6’3" I feel the change made sense for me, and I was right. I finally feel comfortable and balanced riding on the trails. It took a little getting used to, especially on tight turns. But I love the way it climbs!! And over any distances on the trails, I can really open up.

Now, in terms of the Pro vs the Elite, one is complete while the other is a perfect platform to build off of. For myself, I like to personalize my bikes with what I want, so I bought the Elite. This allowed for me to build what I want over time. And, $4600 is a lot of money to spend if you want to change something. In terms of companies, you can’t lose with either one, both build great bikes.

But it will always come down to what "you" want and need. If you are doing down hill, I might steer towards the 26, but over the long distances I would favor the 29er. So do the research and you will be happy with whatever decision you make. Good luck

its not so much about the crash, but the small stones that are still in the palm of my hand that i will always be able to laugh about. (the crash was about ten years ago!)
