I can see the benefits for the elderly or injured, I really can but, I also feel like with many places already giving mountain bikers grief over trails, adding a motor will just give them further leverage to get us off the trails.  In my local parks, we finally have the equestrians and mountain bikers living peaceably and I could see the e bikes further complicating things in state and national parks.  I could see it being a good angle for bike parks to market though…

I’m torn.  Do I want to share local trails with them while riding my bike or my horse?  No, not really.  Do I see an honest use for them? Yes, if elderly or injured.

There have been several articles on here with lists of places that have been fabulous in helping my husband and I plan our vacation.

in reply to: Do you have insurance for your mountain bike? #205323

So much of how it works varies by the company.

With my horses, I bought coverage from a company that only dealt with horses on the competition scene.  Never used it but, I liked knowing that if someone was dumb and walked behind my trailer while I was unloading or didnt stay behind the tape at a parade, I had the liability coverage or if we were in an accident and I lost one of my horses (even though “they” cant be replaced) I would have coverage to get another horse of similar breeding and training.   My husband and I are looking at buying “real” bikes this weekend and I will be looking into something similar.

If you make sure the coverage is “replacement cost” it should put you back on the exact same/like quality of the bike you currently ride.  If you go the actual cash value route, have an accident in 5 years, you may find yourself on a bike that has 5 years depreciation factored into the claim settlement.  I guess it really boils down to what you do.  If I were riding competitively/professionally, I would make sure I had top notch coverage in place like I did when I was competing on my horses.  For me riding just for funzies and staying in shape, eh…

I would have to agree that while I work in the insurance industry, self insuring things like this (if you have the discipline not to touch your savings lol) is not a bad route either.

Just a side note, I work in the insurance industry and yes, we have to make a living but, it really boils down to what is the best fit for you and your financial investment.  I don’t believe in selling a product that will not actually benefit someone. Not being defensive, I just don’t want to come across as “pushing” insurance on them when I don’t think it is practical for everyone.

in reply to: Mountain bike financing: Good idea or bad idea? #204834

On the other hand, I can see two sides of this.

    1) a young person needing to establish credit so that they can move on to something like a mortgage.  We went through this with my husband.  Not bad credit.  Just no payment history because he had always paid cash for his vehicles.  We used a sporting goods card to finance about a $2k purchase and in a year, he had payment history and a decent credit score.  We got 0% interest, it was not hard to pay off, and we got our end goal out of it.

    2) What happens when you wreck/destroy said bike that is under financing?  You may want to check with your insurance provider on either scheduling it on your homeowner’s policy or buying a stand along personal articles policy.  Make sure that it is for “replacement cost value” so that if it is stolen or destroyed, you aren’t on the losing end paying for a bike that you don’t have and now cannot afford to replace.

I would have to agree with you on that.  Having that mindset keeps me from running through drive through windows if I think “I fed x number horses to eat this cheap burger or taco” lol

in reply to: What is the worst mountain bike you've ever owned? #204536

eh… probably the one I am using right now.  A roadmaster of all things. roflol.  but, my husband and I are out on trails, trying not to die, and having fun.  Hopefully, the summer and a promotion at work, will bring new bikes into our lives.

in reply to: What was your first mountain bike? #204475

haha don’t hate but, I’m still on a department store bike with the plan to upgrade at my LBS some time this year… it is a Roadmaster of all things but, I have a blast on it. lol

in reply to: What are your mountain biking goals for 2017? #204441

Considering that of my and my husband’s goals this year was to find a joint hobby that we both could enjoy annnnnd that led to us deciding to give mountain biking a go… we  bought our bikes over the weekend.  These are my goals:

1:  Get out on trails once a week.

    3:  Ride the roads 2xs a week.

4:  Focus on strengthening my core

5:  Go bike packing once a season.
