  • in reply to: 6 Best Downcountry Bikes? Which would you buy? #520013

I bought a Ripley, absolutely love it.

in reply to: Anyone wear MTB pants (not tights)? #506248

I ride with Arc’Teryx Sigma FL pants.  They are climbing pants and are slim, very flexible and have drawstrings at the cuff bottoms to cinch them on the drive side foot.  They work great.  A little pricey at $180.

    – people with earbuds that walk down the center of the trail oblivious to others

    – a close second is people with bluetooth speakers and loud music on the trails.

in reply to: Should I wear a helmet for biking? #263801

As an orthopedic surgeon who has witnessed head injury on the trail, I can tell you that the state of science regarding traumatic injury and the value of helmets is overwhelming.  The relative strength of a skull is similar to tempered glass.  So imagine filling a tempered glass skull with jello, cover with skin and drop it on the floor.  Its a pretty good analogy to what happens when a helmetless head hits pavement.  A good quality helmet certainly isn’t bullet proof, and serious injury happens regardless, but stay in your right mind – wear one.

I was a trauma resident in Pa when mandatory motorcycle helmet laws were repealed in 2000.  Afterwards I got a great deal more sleep on trauma call.  A significantly higher number of motorcycle accident victims were dying in the field before being transported to our level I trauma center.  There, my friends, is Darwin at work.   Don’t do his job for him.

Agree with rmap01.  If a LBS wont let you demo a bike before riding, I would take my business elsewhere.  Before I decided on a recent bike purchase, I took out 3 bikes for at least 24 hour demos.  I needed all that time to really decide.  a trip around the parking lot isnt going to cut it.

in reply to: Suggestions around WV, VA or PA? #238818

That really is a ton of territory.  Don’t know most of the above but, agree with:

Allegrippis trail system near Raystown Lake in PA – fast and flowy, go during dirtfest to demo bikes and meet lots of other riders.

    also would consider

Coopers Rock State Forest near Morgantown WV – great trail system, fast and rocky enough for some rudimentary bike handling practice.

Big Bear Lake, near Morgantown WV – also a location of dirtfest, and some cool annual races.  pure east coast singletrack.

in reply to: When did you start mountain biking? #238817

I started riding in 1987 at 18 years old.  A 26″ wheel Trek Antelope 820.  put over 1000 miles on that bike in the rocky hills of PA and WV.   Been going ever since.   Bikes better now, my fitness isn,t.
