If you would like a good idea on the trails we have to ride in Florida, check out my friend Carlos’ HD videos of our trails at http://www.proedgebiker.com. We have a lot of old mines around the Tampa area that make for good riding for sure. Alafia River State Park and Santos Trails near Ocala are even IMBA Epic systems. And YES, some of us ride full suspension because some of our trails are more Gnarly than you could imagine!

Darren here, St. Pete / Tampa. FL area. I post on SWAMP as well as MTBR now, under the same username.
Active Duty Military, 23 years now… I have made an intro on here before going to the sand box, well I’m finally back and on the bike again.
Hope to see ya out on the trails!!!
I flog a 2005 Stumpy S-Works FSR for now… In the market for a new bike. My first choice is a Pivot Mach 5… but with so many options out there, it’s sorta product overload. I frequent Carter, Santos, Alafia, Boyette, Markham and Oleta regularly. Oleta is my least favorite…
Look out for this guy, he is CRAZY!!! Come on! Look how he spells his name! 😀
My 8 year old rides clipless… The sooner you start, the sooner you overcome the "Fear" factor…
You cant disagree that pulling and pushing at the same time increases power and effciency. 😆 On rides when you are constanly spinning or spinning a good % of the time, clipless is better.
Getting over the fear of being locked in to the bike takes a couple of weeks for most. Some just cant get used to it and quit after a fall or two. The added pedal efficiency and power you get will more than make up for the learning curve if you stay on them. Also the type of riding you do makes a difference. Riding more XC type trails are better for clipless than "big hit" freeride type trails where you really dont need to pedal much anyway.
I use Time ATAC pedals and they are the best I have used as far as ease of clipping/un-clipping.
North Port Trails is a little north of you and closer to I-75.. they are off of Sumter blvd area…
I dont know much about K2’s bikes, but I do know they were owned by Iron horse which has filed for liquidation under bankruptcy and a new company has bought the K2, Columbia, and JEEP brands from them. The bikes in stores now are old stock from iron horse and you may have warranty issues…
Mongoose to Chilipepper? why the name change?
one of my nephew I got while riding in letchworth state park in upstate NY last year…
Yeah, I like it OK. The only thing I noticed is that if I am in a trail and hit "Back" it takes me all the way back out to the main USA map instead of the same general area. So if I am looking in a certain area, say Tampa, and click on one trail, when I hit "back" it will take me all the back to the main usa map istead of keeping me in the same general area to look at other trails.
At Balm-Boyette Scrub Preserve in Riverview, Florida
Another one of just my son Spencer –
it was a Hot Day in Brooksville, Florida!
Here is one on my son and another club member on a ride at Croom wilderness area in the Withalachoochee wildlife area.
Add another reader of BIKE to the list… Others are lacking in everything i like in a mag… The guys at BiKE just seem to have it all together.. 😎
A bunch of us will be camping at Santos this weekend. come join us!
We call the sandy areas "Hill Simulators" since it is like doing a climb….
Our group is seperate from SWAMP, but I and others in the club are members of both clubs. We are working with SWAMP on trail work and events, and our members get the SWAMP discount on event tickets like the Fat Tire Festivale and races. The main difference between the 2 clubs is BAADR has rides on Saturdays and is more family/kid friendly. All of SWAMPS rides and most events are held on Sundays when people like me who attend Church cant make them.
The best place to do that Off road here is Croom Wilderness area in Brooksville. Plenty of long climbs and all off road. There are also parts of Balm-Boyette with longer climbs that would work as well. i teach a basic training class once a month at Wilderness parks in east Tampa that has long climbs olong the levee area that work good.
Yeah, and then there is the Suncoast trail over here in Hillsbough county. It has some climbs, but like I said, paved trails are not for me. If I had no other choice I would ride them, but I have many single track options that I like better…
The BAADR Mountain Bike Club of Tampa Bay is going to plan an event this year as well. I am just now getting the ball rolling on this. Since our club is Family and Kid focused anyway, it just makes since for us to have a large event for this day. The VP of our club is also the new Trips for Kids Tampa Chapter President….
