Go with the one that’s most comfortable and that is in your price range. Getting out on the trails is the important bit. The latest trend isn’t so important.
Done. Hope it helps and looking forward to the results.
Only way I know how to check is to file down to the bare metal for at least a bit of the area of concern. With some luck, it won’t show too bad and you can touch up relatively easy. Of course, if it *is* a crack, the paint damage will be the least of your worries.
Maybe someone else out there has a better idea, but that’s all I’ve got.

You can order online and come by or talk with an employee in a tent by the front door. They’ll even bring bikes outside for test rides, but the public isn’t allowed to come inside. Seems to work okay for now.
The trails (at least the city and county ones) are open here in Tallahassee. At least for now.
Even better. Front derailleurs are considered “chain guards.” Apparently, the Australian government hates 1 bys.
1995 Ultimax Goshawk 300. Bought because it was cheap and my car was broken. Kept it until just a few years ago.
Seth’s Bike Hacks and Park Tool’s Tech Tuesday series (both on YouTube) are excellent places to start, as pointed out above. Global Mountain Bike Network and Global Cycling Network also both have YouTube channels with lots of repair and maintenance videos.
A one stop website is http://www.madegood.org/bikes/complete-guide/ It’s somewhat dull, but the information is good and easy to understand.
And of course, the encyclopedia, http://www.sheldonbrown.com/
I think all of those bikes have pretty good reputations. Best thing is to ride them and choose the one that feels most comfortable to you. Also, a fellow named Seth has a good video about choosing a good bike that may be of interest. Some good things to consider, at least.
