  • in reply to: Forte Pisgah MTB tires… Bargain or Bullsh*t? #109060

I’ve been running a 2.3 Pisgah on the rear for a while now, and they’re nothing special but I’d still call it a "Bargain". It’s really a pretty decent tire. I believe Forte built to spec by Maxxis, the main difference (with a Maxxis tire) being that it’s a really soft compound, so it might be a stretch to get a whole season of riding out of ’em.

Definitely check out those threads, but keep in mind that they are talking mostly about freeride and park drops which have a nice steep landing, so you can just cruise off, stick both wheels on the ground and be on your way.

With a flat landing like this, you need to be thinking about hitting rear-first so you can absorb the (substantial) impact with your legs. Also, depending how much speed you can hit this with, you may need to bring the front up quite a bit as you leave the edge, almost like a manual. Rather than pulling up on the bars or bouncing the fork as you mentioned, think about pushing the bike off the edge with your legs and hips. The bike will naturally leave the edge with the front a bit high. Continue to push until you’re extended and ready to land.

That being said, I wouldn’t attempt this unless your pretty solid doing some smaller stuff (6"-12"). This is a bit tricky at slow speed, and any hesitation or errors on your part are apt to result in a nosedive 😀

Some people do that, but I think it really depends on the tire. I will say the the 2.55 Weirwolf is my all-time favorite dry-and-rocky trail tire, but don’t ever let it touch mud. Ever.

Maverick ML8 – My workaday all-mountain wheels. Even ridden her at Keystone 😎
Rocky Mountain Flow 2 DJ – A little bit hard to get air under you wheels on the trails around here, so I’ve got to get my fix.

Depends how fast you want to get back down 😀 That Scott looks pretty nice as long as you stick to mostly XC type riding (more about distance, speed, and climbing prowess than chewing up technical descents). I’m sure it’s nice and light. However, if you’re just suffering through the climb so you can shred the downhill, you might be happier with something more all-mountain oriented. This way you can have 6" travel but still keep it under 30 lbs, I wouldn’t want to do a lot of climbing on anything much heavier.

I currently work early morning and and late evening shifts most of the time, and only work regular 8-5 hours every couple of months. I really enjoy having more daylight time off when I’m working a shift. I manage get in a ride of some sort (trail, road, or park) just about every day. And there’s a lot to be said for being able to rip down your favorite stretch of trail without stopping for people at 10am on a Tuesday 😃

in reply to: Clipless or Flats? #107883

I rode clipless for years but switched over to flats last season. Yeah, you lose some climbing power, but the flats really force you to improve your bike handling in a hurry. You really have to pump and maintain pressure on you feet or you’ll come off, you can’t just point the bike downhill and let it rattle around under you. Also, it’s confidence inspiring to be able to touch a foot down in a gnarly section or fast turn.

Depends where you want to spend most of you time. Colorado Trail, 401, etc are a higher altitude/cooler, so you’d be best off in July or August (I’m sure Monarch Crest still has plenty of snow on it). However, if you want to spend most of your time in the Fruita/Grand Junction area, I would pack up and leave right now, because it’s not going to get any cooler until September.
