    Hey Steve,
I`ve got a Talas RL on my 05 Stumpy, and have not had an ounce of trouble with mine, my buddies Titus Motolite has a Talas RLC on his and has had seal leakage trouble (fixed under warranty), but that has been it.
Sorry to hear of your trouble, maybe you could call the "Push" guys and pick their brain.

A Jamis Dakar would be great, plus I would bet that you could find a good deal on one if you checked around ( I think Jenson`s sells Dakars).

Jensons USA had this Dakar, it comes in 17” or 19” . It is their XC model though. They have AM Dakars, but I noticed that they were like 13” and 15” models. I`m sure that other`s have AM Dakars out there somewhere but I did not take the time to track them down (I live in the country where I can`t get high speed internet, I`m on dial up 😏 ). Good luck!

Hey BigE, If I were you, and if I ever thought that I`d be on the trails any at all, I would treat myself to a full suspension bike. The major bike brand companies all have awesome bikes at this price level. I am personally fond of Specialized myself, but if your local bike shop carries Trek or Cannondale or Jamis, I wouldn`t hesitate to pick one of these brands either. MOST bike shops are very good at steering a customer into a bike that will make him or her happy. While there is no way that I would go on a new or used car lot and tell the salesman what I intended to spend, it wouldn`t bother me at all to tell a bike salesman about what I was planning on spending…the reason being, is that in this price range the manufacturers are wringing all the bang for the buck that they can (plus when you find your dream bike, you can always haggle on it then, I don`t believe the mark up is huge at this price range anyway).
OK, having said that, my choice is the Specialized FSR XC Comp.

The MSRP is $1600, but I`m sure that they would come down to your price range. This was Bicycling Magazine`s "Value" full suspension bike pick.

But this is just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions…

Hey KB, this is a little off topic, but I have asthma problems myself.
Uh, this isn`t medical advice, but I, myself, have been known to use my inhaler right before a ride…worked wonders for me, not that I`m suggesting that you do this (consult your physician first).
I would have to agree with you, the better shape that I`m in, the less problems I have with the asthma thing. Take care.

Hey BigE, how much was you planning on spending? I don`t know if you were thinking of a hardtail or full suspension? What brands do your local shops carry?
Glad you`ve decided to get back into the game!

in reply to: Thoughts on Flat Prevention… #72640

Well KB, it looks like I`m the only person posting today (except for you and Mr. Big), maybe because it`s been raining 😢 a solid 2 days now where I live (instead of being out riding 😃 ) .
I`m not the norm, but I`ll give you my opinion on flats,
    1. Liners and "slime" are heavy.
    2. Rotating weight is the most critical weight on your bike, i.e. tires, tubes, rims, spokes, hubs, in this descending order. I don`t know how much you weigh, but a light wheelset is like heaven if your not doing super crazy stuff. What I`m trying to say is, I would much rather pack a patch kit and a small pump and change the occasional flat tire, than fill it up with slime, or put a liner in it.

That`s my 2 cents worth, take care.

    in reply to: Helmets #69911

Hey KB, I checked out the link you provided, and if I were to travel to this trail and ride it, I personally would not feel the need for elbow or shin pads. Having said that, if you feel like it would set your mind at ease, I wouldn`t hesitate to buy a set. It`s just that I`m a minimalist when it comes to riding, I don`t even like having a camelbak on unless I absolutely have to have it (epic rides). Hopefully someone with a different opinion will post, and then you can get two sides to the story.

Holy cow Bomardier, I haven`t thought about those two forks in years. Can you still purchase them? Or is it an Ebay item?
Either one of them forks would be a conversation starter around these parts. Their so quirky, that the`re cool.

    in reply to: Helmets #69909

Hey KB, Welcome to the forum.
I always wear a helmet, but I don`t wear elbow and knee protection. I guess if I was trying "North Shore" type of stuff (which I don`t plan to) I would consider it. I guess I`m just wondering what you consider "intermediate. I live in an area where the glaciers stopped, and left a lot of boulders and rocks. To me, this is what I call "hike a bike" areas, and when I am riding there I do not wear protection…but then again, I`m not dropping off 12` ledges either. I hope you find some good people to ride with in your area. I started MTB riding in 1993 and quite a few of the people I started with are still my friends today. Once again welcome, this is a great sport! 😃

Wow, great picture, makes me want to drop everything and load up the bike for some riding!

in reply to: Anyone ever ridden a "Dirty Century"? #72606

Trek7, I`ve never ridden a "dirty century" before, but I have rode a road bike century under 5 hours with 3 other riders in a paceline (yes, taking my pull at the front when it was my turn). It was brutal. At about the same time in my life I did a 36 mile MTB point to point race (longest MTB race I have ever done) and it was brutal. I can only imagine what a 100 mile MTB race would be like, at the time I was averaging 6 to 11 hrs of training per week split about 50/50 between the MTB and road bike. I found the road bike to be crucial in my performance. There is a slow death to be had on a road bike that I couldn`t achieve on my MTB. If I were to try a dirty century, I would hook up with some roadies for awhile and build a super good base, well at least that is what I would do. Good luck!
If you decide to follow through with this, I would love to hear about your experience in a future Singletracks post.

P.S. Remember, you`ll regret the things you didn`t do, more than the things you did!

With "Peak Oil" a distinct possibility, you my friend, could be in a growth industry in the near future.

in reply to: DESCRIBE YOUR MOST KNEE SHAKING RIDE. #72575

I don`t know if this counts, but here goes, back in the 90`s I rode a road bike to get into better shape for MTB racing, I was sucking wind at the back of the pack when we went around a corner to find that one of the guys that we were riding with had been hit by a car (OK, so maybe I was sucking wind so much that I got dropped to the second pack). It broke his pelvis among other things, and by the time the ambulance carted him away, not only was my knees shaking, but my stomach was tied into knots.

Did I mention that road bikes suck?

in reply to: Lexington KY MTBikers #72597

One more thing HB1024, around here if a new rider wanted to start riding with the group, they would be welcomed with open arms. I would bet money that they are the same way in Lexington, KY too. You know, that southern hospitality thing.

in reply to: Lexington KY MTBikers #72596

Welcome to the world of MTBing HB1024! 😃
This is only a suggestion, but you could go to your local bike shops and see if they have any group rides going on. Around here we have group rides (both MTB and Road) that have all kinds of different ages and skill levels (plus female riders also). I enjoy riding by myself, but when I have friends along it`s even better.
    Take care.

    in reply to: QUESTION??? #72564

Thanks Bonkedagain, after I read Slyp Dawgs responce, I googled RIAA and found out that these guys mean business (going after grannys and dead people), but like SD said, I don`t think they would come after me. I appreciate the links to the royalty free music, and I plan to check it out.

    in reply to: QUESTION??? #72562

    Thank you Slyp Dawg. 😃

in reply to: chainring bash guards? #72512

Hey Slyp Dawg, hardly a day goes by without me seeing a "wally world" bike thrown in a dumpster. If your out riding around it might be worth your while to check this out. (YES, I`m serious) Both of my brother`s sons are riding on bikes he pulled out of the dumpster (my brother is in his 30`s, and is completely debt free, something to think about, no need to be a debt slave all your life). Plus if you wind up busting that puppy, it didn`t cost you a thing. (I haven`t actually looked at a wally world bike lately, I just assume they no longer have the old fashioned cranks on them) Take Care!

My main riding buddy has a Motolite. In one word, awesome.

in reply to: any Transition riders on here? #72551

Hey Slyp Dawg, have you ever considered a Santa Cruz Nomad? Found this one on Ebay, it`s an 07 med. frame that starts bidding at $1100. These are good looking bikes that are at the top of the food chain. I have never heard anything but praise for this bike and I think Bombardier has one too. I know I`m constantly beating the big red S`s drum, but if I wanted a top quality bike that could take a bigger hit than my Stumpy (which believe me, at my age, I don`t), this bike would be at the top of my list. Of course I don`t know how big you are, so this frame might be too big, or too small for you. I don`t know what the winning bid would be, but you never know, a person could get lucky. Something to think about. http://tinyurl.com/yrzqst
