My name is Doug and I live is Dallas, GA. I have been riding since the Spring. I have been riding on the Silver Comet Trail(and side trails), Blankets Creek, & my favorite Clinton Reserve. My main bike is an old Trek 800 Mountain Track(rigid)…but I have a new Cannondale F7 one the way.

    Doug 😎

Hey, where’s Clinton Reserve? (yes, I’m too lazy to look it up)

I’ll keep an eye out for you at Blankets. I spend about 90% of my ride time there.

Did you come out of this okay? I’ve been in that situation before, and it did not end well. ;)

Hey Rebus, hows it goin?I am reading your post on your fox float rlc.I have the fox talas rlc and am possibly thinking of getting a coil pre load fork.If i make this change and stay with fox,i will have to get away from the talas feature on the account that the talas feature does not come with a coil pre loaded option.I bought my bike pretty much around the talas(travel adjust)feature and feel that being a bigger rider (280 plbs.) the ability to adjust down to 100 mm travel to climb up a mountain is pretty beneficial to me.I am wondering what you think the difference in haveing or not haveing travel adjust on a mountain bike is.

I’ve never used a TALAS or U-turn fork, so I can’t really comment on the difference. I had a Manitou Minute that had the Infinite Travel adjust, but it sucked and I never used it. My brother has two TALAS forks, but he sets the travel at 130mm and never changes it. For my riding style I don’t think a travel adjustable fork would benefit me and my riding style to the point where I’d be willing to spend $100 – $150 extra on it. The Float RLC works for me and I love that thing.

Maybe Bombadier could comment on this….

Welcome to Single Tracks huttobk. Hey Rebus.

I was visiting our distributor for window film in Holly Springs and stayed in Woodstock. Any time I travel by automobile I look to see if there are trails near by and I take my bike if I can. I brought my bike down and rode Blankets Creek. Its definately a fun trail and everyone was supper nice. I rode on Monday and Tuesday evening so I got to ride the Dwelling and the South Loop in both directions. I like the Teusday ride on the dwelling because of the big jump about half way though the trail. You can get some pretty good air off that one. I did notice some trail work going on off Mosquito Flats and tried to ride some of that but its really soft right now. I hope to get back down by spring and will definately be bringing my bike. Let me know when the trail work is completed maybe I can find a reason to get back down there on business.

Oh yeah! That’s the new section code-named Area 51 or the North Loop depending on who you talk to. It’s going to add a bunch of miles along with some nice technical stuff.

I like the Tuesday direction also, on the South Loop too. It’s a bit faster than the Monday direction, or so it seems.

Next time you’re here, drop me an email.

sounds good. i’ll be back out there as soon as it dries out. maybe tomorrow? i’d be happy to let you take my fuel around the loop. it’s a 19.5.

Aw, I really shouldn’t.. I wreck a lot and probably exceed the weight limits on that baby. ;)

Welcome to ST! I’ll look for you out at Blankets…I’m there about 3-4 days a week on an orange Heckler with blue King and Hope crap on it.

Nice Trek. I love the redesign and been wanting to demo the new suspension. Very cool.

Green’s Lick at Pisgah in western NC.

I was going too fast and the jumps were coming too quick. I wasn’t setting up properly between the jumps and so I ended up doing a couple of front wheelies before I finally just slammed on the brakes to regroup.

I almost went over once, it was so close I have no idea how I saved it.

By the time I got to the bottom, I just pulled over laid the bike down and leaned up against a tree.

Scary but I can’t wait to do it again.

    Hmmmm…I think I still want one. 😃

Wow, DT Swiss carbon forks? Interesting. Wonder how much those babies cost?

in reply to: Blankets Creek – South Loop reroute #72136

One other thing the SORBA work party fixed was the section right before the little rock step-up that is at the start of the steep section to the Breezy Hill switchbacks.

This used to be a loose rooty/rocky/washed-out section with rocks that were angled in such a way that it was difficult to get any traction or leverage. It was also hard to come into that section with good speed because of the rocks/roots just before. They smooth this section out a bit and made it easier. Some folks will probably bitch that they sterilized it.

I’m still undecided. They definitely made it much more manageable from a trail maintenance standpoint, but they took out one of the challenges that keep me looking forward to riding that trail. This section was one of those that I would start thinking about the closer I got to it. I’d start planning my gear selection, making sure my head was in the game and trying to visualize the line I’d take to try and clean that section. I’d made it a few times, failed a few times, walked it a few times, but it always kept me excited. I’ll miss that.

Same with the original Breezy Hill switchback. It was murderous and ugly and very hard, but it was a challenge that I looked forward to trying every time. I never cleaned it, and now will never get the chance. At first I thought, "Good, take out that nightmare section that kicks my butt every time", but now, I kinda miss it. 😢

It’s probably too late to do anything like this in Colorado this year, but I’m totally in if something is planned for next year, late Spring/early-mid Summer. In fact, I was planning a Crested Butte roadtrip there around that time anyway. If something is planned out, I’ll arrange my vacation around the ST gathering. Man, this’d be GREAT!

That’s what I call the "real skinny" Thanks Bomb, seems you always bring your "A" Game

Yes, he does. If I have a techy question, he’s my go-to guy.

in reply to: Front Fork design #72231

The Lefty fork is a pretty solid fork. I’ve never ridden one and I’m not much of a techy, but I know that it works as well as any "normal" fork. I think it would take some getting used to, looking down and only seeing one tube, but once you get past that, I think the Lefty performs as well as any Fox or Rock Shox. Some people swear by them, plus you get a definite boost up the coolness ladder. 😎 😉

in reply to: Blankets Creek – South Loop reroute #72135

No pictures yet, but the reroutes are SWEET! They took out a 20 ft section and replaced it with about 200 yards or twisty, tight, lovely singletrack with a few log crossings, roots and rocks. VERY nice.

Also, the washed out switchback up to Breazy Hill has been redone. It’s still a lung-burner climb, but is much more manageable. Again, VERY nice.

Hello, just signed up for this site. I was a fairly avid road biker many years ago. In about 96 I bought a GT Avalanche le and within two weeks developed neck problems which prevented riding. Just got the bike out of storage a few weeks ago and am starting to ride again. I won’t embarrass myself with distances as I am only now getting back into any physical activity after neck surgery in 2001

Welcome to Singletracks! Those "old" GT’s were pretty bad-ass back in the day. Have fun getting back into riding!

This past Father’s Day I spent on the trails with my oldest son 38, and my youngest son 27, and since it was Father’s Day, every once in a while I’d let them catch up. 😉

Great post! I enjoyed reading that. Thanks

When you get down to Asheville, what trails have you got on your agenda?

I rode Bent Creek a few months ago and had a friggin’ BLAST. Green’s Lick was a wild ride. If you don’t have it on your docket, consider adding it. Just hitting that downhill was well worth the climb.

in reply to: Bear Creek : construction? #70352

Rode Bear Creek this past weekend and the section I mentioned in the first post has completely grown over with weeds. I’m not sure what the purpose of the ground work was, but now the whole area I mentioned is buried under 4 ft high weeds and grass. When you ride through this section the leaves will slap you pretty good. ;)
