I must admit I’ve been plagued by this kind thing a coupe of times.

Most recently it took a several bottom rebuilds and finally solved by ptfe plumbers tape.

I have heard stories where it was just the rear axle being loose.  The power transmitted to back wheel etc and then the sound transmitted back making it sound like a bb prob!

Think the sad truth is it can be from anywhere.

    Hi,

Another vote for wax.  Been experimenting with making my own.

Currently running soya wax with teflon….

    Smooooothhhh.

    Hi,

It’s all been said already really.  Tubeless is great; amazing even.

Up till a few months ago was riding a 2003 bike, well specced for its time but very very of its time.  Bought a new bike. It had 3.0 tyres tubeless.  Picked the wheel up to put it in the car…light!  Incredibly.

This translates to increased acceleration and the proproception of this is just stunning….was thinking…does this thing have an engine? … it was so perky. All that physics of ‘unbraked rotational mass’ really works for you when you shed a kilo of inner tube!

    have fun.

Teflon tape has done the trick.

    Silent transmission now!

    Thank you!

    Thanks guys.

Took a look at chain ring bolts, nipped them up. Look ok.

Going to try ptfe tape next.

    cheers

    Hi,

Creaks when static and standing next to bike, brakes applied and pressure applied to pedal. Worse on non-drive side.  Silent when sat on bike with feet on floor.

When someone else performs above manoeuvre vibration felt along with creak at crank.

Rebuilt 4x with different greases and torques on cups and crank today.  No change.

Next step Loctite grade 222 low strength thread lock. (On order)

Last resort swap out for Shimano BB but seems retrograde as Hope unit 8x the price (!) and wayyyyy less pretty.

Still appreciate any ideas.  Can’t help thinking I’m missing something.

    Yup. Everything. Totally.

    Hi,

Good point.  I had some cheap flats on.

Swapped them out and it is still creaky.

Shame, would have been a quick fix!

    Thanks

    Hi,

Re: 11 speed on a 10 speed compat. Free hub:

    Have you seen this:

Can’t vouch for its accuracy and application to MTB freehubs but it does have some dimensions in there.

Also Sheldon Brown usually has something sensible about most things?

    Cheers

    Hi,

Agreed, long may they continue to make the older standard stuff.

I have a soft spot for my 2005 hard-tail. (QR, square taper etc!).  Recently missed (didn’t check pre-ride, silly error!) a loose QR bolt on a 6h trail ride so v.pleased good quality QR skewers and axles still available!

Hubs are also getting worn (despite bearing re-builds) so will be looking at new (old fashioned) hubs soon too.

    Hi,

    Some interesting points here.

I think the entry and low-to-mid levels for ‘proper’ bikes is really tough, a bit exploitative and relies heavy on marketing rather than performance.  The preponderance of top-end bikes on websites and in magazines makes this tougher and makes researching it hard; as you have found.

No one s really shaking that market up right now (although in the UK Go-outdoors range is I think). It is probably still ripe for a (maybe smaller) firm to do something that could make them heros to a lot of beginners and potentially make them a good amount of money.  That tends to happen eventually in closed/stagnant or exploitative markets.

I think if you have $4k plus there is a lot of data and opinion and you would be pretty sure to get a great bike.  I think folk on that budget forget how messy the rest of the market is.

Hope you are happy with your bike.  I was in a similar position earlier this year.  Really happy with mine!

    cheers
