Lpwn_Ranger, sounds like those coyotes are getting a little too use to humans.

We had a wolf issue up here in Eagle River, just outside of Anchorage a couple of years ago. There was a couple dogs attached by wolves while they were being walked and then a pack of 6 to 7 wolves chased a couple of ladies out jogging up a tree. The wolves chased off their dog and waited at the base of the tree for 2 hours before giving up. There were looking for something bigger then dogs that time. Needless to say the the State opened wolf hunting in the area and we haven’t had any issues since.

Up here in Alaska I have a moose or other wild life sighting on almost every ride and I’ve had a couple close calls with our furry friends.

One day I was coming down a local trail (STA Trails) and rounded a banked curve hauling butt. As soon as I came out of the curve there was the biggest Bull Moose I’ve ever seen, maybe twenty feet in front of me straddling the trail. I slammed on my brakes as hard as I could and laid the bike down. The sound of my tires trying to get traction was enough to spook him and he jumped off the trail but not fast enough, my helmet hit his ankle right as I slid past where he had meen standing. Luckily he just kept walking.

There was another time, a couple of years ago, a buddy and I were ridding Johnston Pass Trail (this is a true wilderness trail miles from anywhere). We stopped for some water about five miles in, I looked back down the trail as I drank and noticed two black faces looking at us from the woods about thirty feet away. We quickly got back on our bikes and took off, the two black bears followed us for about a mile, trotting behind us on the trail and they finally got bored and disappeared into the woods.

It was a one time deal for this past summer, it looks like they will be improving the trail system over the next couple years and will be offering weekend access once the trails dry out and firm up all this coming summer.

I’ve been riding with my 6 year old beagle now for over a year, at first I used dog treats in my pocket to keep her behind the bike and she did great from the first ride. Now when we encounter other people on the trails all I have to do is call her name followed by the phrase, “off” and she will step off the trail, slow her pace and lowed her head in a submissive way as we pass others, I tried to teach her to sit as others passed but she is always to exited to sit lol. She does all this with her tail wagging like crazy because 99% of the people we pass give her praise as do I. I also make sure she relieves herself before and after we hit the trail.

A well trained dog is a joy to have along on a bike ride. I take her for a ride at least once or twice a week on less traveled trails. Do I take her on trails I know will be crowded? No, those trails I do by myself but I know she would do fine; I worry about others reactions and encountering less well behaved dogs.

Should every dog be allowed on trails? No, but a dog that is well trained dog shouldn’t be an issue. Hell I’ve seen some bike riders that behave worse than dogs on trails lol 😆 .

Renting with http://www.rentabikenow.com/ turned out to be a great experience. Got the bike I viewed online and it was in great shape and the price was exactly what the site said it would be. 😃 I would recommend this site and it’s rental system to everyone.

P.S. To anyone that has never rented a bike before: you need to be able to put a very good sized ( I had to put $1500 down) refundable deposit on the bike. Don’t worry they don’t charge this amount to your credit card they just make sure the amount is available in case you don’t return the bike.

Disc brakes are worth having, you can convert any bikes swingarm to disc. Here is a link to one of many companies that make a conversion kit.

I guess big companies are jumping on the Frivolous Lawsuit bandwagon… http://listverse.com/2009/01/28/top-10- … -lawsuits/

+1 on the bike companies worrying more about the products they put out and less on the lawsuits!

You know, I have a friend who is a large arms mechanic and mainly works on cannons… his name is Dale, maybe we have a lawsuit… $$$$$$

My oldest son decided it would be a great idea to stop and take a picture or two after I had told them all to just keep riding. (he still doesn’t listen) I’ve run into tons of moose up here while on rides but this guy has been the only thing that could possible eat me (No lesbian puns intended) lol. 😮

OUCH, I did something similar on Johnson Pass last summer… The trail was over grown and I was tired, ended up missing one of those small 2 foot wide wash outs close to the Moose Pass exit, endo’d into a nice sized rock. It wasn’t fun.

    Hope the shoulder is ok.

I rode a 2003 Cannondale F3 for about 5 years before upgrading to a Cannondale Prophet FS bike, I loved that hardtail and man was it fast. Never rode the F7 but the warranty with Cannondale is one of the best out there and the reviews I’ve read on the F7 can’t be beat!

WOW, whats next? An impact preventing foam that encapsulates the rider in case of a crash like they had in cars on that 90’s movie Demolition Man? LOL
