Bend, OR. Final Answer…
I live in PHX, so keeping water cold is always a plus. I recently purchased an insulated tube to attached to my camelback (the tube is made by them as well). I put cubes in my pack and that will keep the water cool for at least 3-4 hours.
I was having the issue of the first part of the drink being warm, mainly due to the water heating up while sitting in the tube. This new, neoprene insulated, tube really does the trick. Cold water all of the time. It was worth the $20 to me.
Another plus is the moldable wire that is between the tube and the insulation. It allows me to shape the water tube to fit my body, and no tube dancing on my face when the trail gets fun.
I hear ya mate…And I blame Warren Miller for this cliche’. It was cool in the 80’s.
The drunk cyclist is an entertaining site…
Santa Cruz Tall Boy!!!!! 29er bliss…
Well,
The Whiskey Offroad was this past weekend, and I must say it was the most awsomely painful experience of my life!!!! I did the 25 proof course, which felt longer than any 50 miler I’ve ever done. The climbing was relentless, and the descents were long and grueling. There were two major climbs on the course that totalled 4000 vertical feet. I have never cramped so bad in my life as I did topping the second climb. Ironicly they call it "cramp hill". Once I spent several minutes working the fist size knots out of my quads, groin, and hammies (yes, I walked a bit) I was able to finish the final 12 miles to the finish line, thankfully it was 90% downhill from that point.
My neighbor had a GoPro on for the race, so we should have some footage of the carnage once he thumbs through it all. In the interim, here’s a link giving a better description of the race.

I highly recommend this event, it was a great time all around, and the support from the Prescott community was unbelievable.
Hey Golden,
I’m not sure about the rental scene at the Grand Canyon, but if you are going to go through Flagstaff there are many options for quality bike rentals. I want to say the drive is about 1.5 to 2 hours to the canyon from Flag. There is a bike path you could take from Flag to the Grand Canyon too, but it adds a day and a half each way. Absolute Bikes in Flag is a pretty good place to start if you can’t find anything closer.
Great video, thanks!!
Do you eat a lot of rich foods? Because Gout would not feel comfortable in any show. 😃 I’ve been riding on a pair of Pearl Izumi Enduro II (i think that’s the name of them). The have two velcro straps and a rachet style strap at the top. They’ve been pretty good for me, on both short and long rides. I’m assuming you are riding clipless.
The little guy can really shred the Gnar! That is awsome!!!!
Nice crash, my man. We need the details to go with the picks though, a "blow by blow" so to speak. 😆 I know AK Dan had a nice picture of his cracked helmet, I think from last year while he was down here in the desert. I recall him having some good input on helmets.
You might wanna get a helmet for that elbow, heh.
That is awsome! I must say for it to be truly American, you need to add at least one strip of Duct tape. 😃
I "zen" view would be; " mountain biking is everything, and nothing". 😉
Hi there, quick question. Do you where gloves when you ride, and do they have padding in the palms. I had the same issue you do, especially on long rides, and it was due to the padding. My hands do much better with no padding on the palms. Also, there is an ergonomic aspect to grips, similar to tennis rackets. If the glove isn’t the issue I would evaluate your current grips and try some different designs. while I haven’t tried the ergonomic grips, I’ve heard from several who swear by them. I’m sure you will get a few more ideas from the "crew" shortly.
Oh, make sure you don’t have "Death Grip". My daughter gets that from time to time. 😀
Well, I’m biased, but AZ. is awsome in February! You can get some great deals on a wide range of resorts in Phoenix as well. There are hundreds of miles of crazy single tracks all around the city and surrounding areas. Tucson is 1.5 hours Southeast of Phx, with some really beautiful saguaro cactus forests.
Sedona’s RedRock country is only 1.5 hours north on I-17, and I don’t think I need to go into the beauty of that area. Let me know if you need any information or specifics on lodging or rides.
Also it will be spring training around that time, so if you have a need for any metropolitan fun, or a baseball fix, those things are here for you as well.
It’s been a long "summer", so our season is just starting here. It should be room temperature here in February, about 70 degrees.
I remember this last Spring, riding with my neighbor, his girlgriend, and my daughter. We were riding near trail 100 in Phoenix’s North Mtn. Preserve. While my daughter (13) is pretty aggressive on her bike, she is a girly girl at heart. One of the things that makes her freak the most is bees. I had to leave her on the trail and backtrack, to help my neighbor’s girlfriend with a bike problem. The repair took about 10 minutes, and as we were heading towards my daughter, who was out of site at the time due to terrain, we heard this low humming sound. It reminded me of the sound B52’s make in war movies that I’ve seen. As we make our way over this small crest we see this cloud of bees (at least 40 to 50 thousand by my estimate) flying over where my daughter was. We rushed over to find her lying face down under her bike. She did great I thought. Usually she freaks out, runs around, and screams at the top of her lungs at the sight of just one bee. It was cool to see her instincts kick in and see her stay calm through it all. I’ve never seen such a huge swarm before. These were Africanized bees looking for a new nest. They were hovering probably 15 to 20 feet above the ground, so no one was stung. Pretty amazing sight though.
Good times on the trail, always!
The only rain we get this time of year in Phoenix is when we turn on our sprinklers, or when Pacman Jones is in town. 😃 It’s getting to the point where we have to ride before 9am, or head up to Sedona for the day.
I especially like the Batman graphics depicting the Horse snapping it’s ankle. Who comes up with this stuff?
It’s been a while since I’ve been through this with my two girls. I seem to recall them learning on flat ground, in our cul de sac. I think the biggest thing that helped them figure things out was explaining the whole counter balance thing. I mentioned to the girls that to keep balance, just steer in the direction the bike feels like it’s leaning.
They did have training wheels at first, which I set so the bike could lean a couple inches each way. I had them try the counter balance with the wheels on, for confidence, then took them off and they never looked back. Fond memories, enjoy the time with your daughter.
Nice,
MB Action has a nice article, this month, about the Red Rocks area trails. Pretty nice, but they didn’t have any shots of the theatre. I own music that is live from there, but until now I’ve never seen it. Thanks 😃
