I have the Kenai pads from Specialized, which are lightweight but still provide a modicum of protection. I am no downhiller, so I don’t anything heavy duty but it’s nice having the protection for Xstruntry riding.

Second the MKIII – got the 2007 and it’s by far been the best FS rig I have owned yet. Climbs like a horny mountain goat, which in the northeast is extremely helpful. 5 inches of travel means I can do just about anything within my comfort level.

in reply to: Are there any other pod riders out there??? #72529

I like keeping all my senses open in the woods and wouldn’t want to cut off my hearing, especially in the some of the forests that I ride in where there are all sorts of animals and hunters running about.

If I were riding where I didn’t have to worry about being shot by some crazy hunter then I’d listen to some hard and thrashing like Exodus or Suicidal Tendencies. Older Black Sabbath would be good, like Vol 4 or Paranoid, but I think listening to Planet Caravan in the woods would get me pretty paranoid. Otherwise, I would go Fu Manchu.

    Pump Track – ?

Read that recently in an article about a new biking area in NY, Im guessing it would be the eaquilivent of a practice track, is that right?

Sort of, from what I understand it’s flat, with curves that are banked to get you up on them. Sounds fun.

Here is a local term because we have many MTB’ers in CT:

QM or QM’ing which is the act of walking or riding up to a stunt but not actually doing it, in order to check whether it’s within your ability, or you are just scared sh!tless by it and don’t want to appear like the chickensh!t that you really are, so you want to check it out first.

Pulled the trigger on some acids yesterday from Blue Sky Cycling. $49 a pair.

Superman – Results are the same as Endo described above but in this case it’s the actual act of coming free of the bike (in most cases) and flying over the handlebars.

Talking with the locals,I found out that in Vermont there is a law that prevents trails users of suing landowners if ever an accident occured

We have that law down here in CT, too. I have been meaning to go up there and ride. In fact George at Bike29 in Waterbury, VT was supposed to hold his second annual Meat-up there last summer but it all fell through. Maybe this year, though, if not definitely the next!

I run it alongside my Edge 305 the first time I’m on a trail, just to find my way around, but the Edge records a better track (tighter and more points along the route)

How does your Edge and MAP60 tracks compare? Are they close in terms of distance? From time to time, I think my Edge inflates my distance. Been thinking about getting a cyclocomputer just to compare.

Did you get some squish or did you get the rigid? I think it got a favorable writeup in MBA last year. Pix?

in reply to: can You help me? #72987

I got the 07 MKIII Comp and I love it! Climbs like a horny mountain goat and descends like the biatch the old goat was chasing! I was going to point you to Bicycle Bananas if you wanted a screaming deal but they are all out. Stay away from the 07 Sport. In 08, I think they are only producing the Sport (which is basically the Comp) and the Expert which is super bling bling. Get the Hydros, they are worth it. Avid BB7s are going good for singlespeeds.

    Welcome Uni’Cake! Niiiiceee handle!

Here is an acronym for you:

    MTB – Mountain Bike/Biking

    And some terminology:

Roller – Anything that you can roll down that is not specifically a trail. A good examples is a boulder.

Skinny – horizontal tree that you get upon and pedal across, presumably without falling off.

Huck/Hucking – to lunch oneself off something while on a bike.

Drop – A rather quick change in elevation like from the top of a rock to it’s base, but it’s face is too steep to roll, therefore you huck it.

That should get you going and welcome

I’ll take any location where the locals aren’t always trying to pressure me into buying their crap, trying to rip me off all the time, my safety is in jeopardy due to my nationality, and they have to have good beer.

Let’s see, that rules out Mexico, Central and South America, Russia, Poland, Balkan Countries, Africa, Middle East, Asean Countries, Korea, China, South West, South East Asia, and France.

I think that leaves Canada (which is just a colder version of the US and a different accent), and Europe, some former eastern block countries. I will make exceptions for wine producing countries like Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Switzerland, Austria, or Southern Germany of course would be ideal because I can sprechen sie die Deutsch and have some chance of scoring with the Putzfrau.

Barring that, I’d also like a chance to ride somewhere other than the North East.

    Welcome Gato.

I am in CT and have a few friends that live in New Jersey. I think they live in the northern part and a have few places to ride. I hear there are some cool places to ride in Pine Barrens in Epic proportions otherwise I haven’t heard a whole lot. There is MTB park/Ski Area called Diablo, I think that is very popular as well but that is probably closed to biking right now.

Hilarious t-shirt by the way. Does that say "don’t shoot me bro" ? Priceless.

Yeah, a local biking community (http://www.bikerag.com) decided to put out a fall riding shirt and after all the deliberations, this what they came up with. My input was to have the "Don’t shoot me bro" down low so it’s not blocked by the camel. This was the first chance I had to ride most of December because of the weather. It was close to 50 today!

What they do is this. They release the dogs, the dogs run and try to find bears, then tree them. The hunters then come up and shoot the bear out of the tree. Poor bear.

That sounds totally unsportsmanlike. That’s like shooting ducks and geese while they are on the ground or swimming. I’d like to see these same hunters try going after a grizzly.

Here I am with my flux. Rode today, but it was crappy with all the slush and crust.

I agree on the orange. All my outer wear is orange. I have an orange Novara Tempest jacket (highly recommend it) that I wear on every fall/winter ride because many of my trails butt up against private property and I don’t want a budweiser infested hunter to mistake me for Rudolph.

Yeah, I know what you mean. This year, I went a little nuts with the orange attire which now includes a Columbia Blaze Orange Howling Wind Jacket – this thing is warm! Thank goodness it has zip pits.

I got a few blaze orange long sleeve Ts, a zip up fleece hoodie and an Adidas Storm riding jacket.

I am pretty oranged out. You can never be too safe.

While there is hunting on private land, where I live there isn’t that much that abuts where the riding is, however, we do have quite a few State Forests that have trails in them and where hunting is allowed – that can be scary.

In fact there is a story floating around about a woman up in Mass whose dog was shot by a hunter and it seems that the hunter didn’t offer any assistance but she got a look at him. Bastard. Further sullies hunters.

I am kind of torn on the need for hunters. Since I live in a somewhat rural but becoming urbanized area, the dear are more like hooved rats. They eat your shrubs and get in the way of the cars at times. So hunting is good because it thins the herds.

However, in the same respect, I think hunters, the NRA, and other fanatics (no offense Bomberman) take the Right to Bare Arms way to seriously. There are way too many guns available and knuckleheads that have no clue how to safely use them. Which makes me a little uneasy.

in reply to: Road/Mountain Clips #72452

I started out with Mallets but found clipless to give me better control. Of course there are risks with clipless, like not coming out in time when you go OTB. That’s why [i:klgb7u5r]real daring men only ride clipless[/i:klgb7u5r] and [i:klgb7u5r]wear armour[/i:klgb7u5r], too.

Or maybe it’s age. You young, whipper snappers can afford a few injuries every now and then but when you have a job and a family to support, every bit of extra protection is worth it.

None-the-less, went to Shimanos two years ago and loved them. Then I got a pair of CBs on my Iron Horse and found to like them even more and have switched out my SS to CBs, too. Now, most clipless brands also offer the best of both worlds, clipless platforms, which is what I am going to put on my ‘Horse for those harry moments.

What get’s me is right after I got my flux, Giro comes out with the 2008 Hex in an Olive green with Orange highlights, and recently I have turned into an orange Ho.

I think I am so obsessed with orange right now because it’s still hunting season and I want to be seen, and hopefully not shot at.

I am tempted to get the Hex and then compare the two. The stone camo is cool though.
