  • in reply to: Got a "home" trail? #69131

Looks like a trail I would like to ride. Well There are all sorts of trails I want to ride. Just going to have to plan some trips… I may have only one "home" trail, however there are a few trails I just feel at home!

Hey, I said, "I do not crash much". By saying that I know that I am going to crash. I even got one on video. Though not much to watch…

I get pretty sore, but like everyone else I suggest a protein and hydrate. I have used two different products. But in the end, within the 30 minute window of the ride ending, at least 10 grams of protein, (7gram in a serving of peanuts or peanut butter, 6 grams in an egg. just check some labels) and I like to drink 1/2 water and sports drinks. Makes the sports drink go further, I think there are a little thick anyways. I have been taken a product called "Dark Matter" and reviewed it in the nutrition section. I find that getting hydrated and at least the 10 grams of protein helps. And I not a yoga fan, however in the military stretching is really important during training. Usually twice as long as you would be for you start. And sometimes a quick spin around the block will loosen things up a bit.

I think you are going to have to demo(where you intend on riding) the different bikes. And see what works for you. You may have a different riding style than mine. And you can get different stems and seatposts to make small adjustments. however I think if you ride both, you will have a better idea what needs to change. And the one that requires the lest amount of changes is the one you buy.

I have seen a few people ride without their helmets. I do not crash much, however I do use my helmet to block branches and/or face slappers. I have not ridden without mine. I mistakenly ran over my last helmet with my fishing boat (was on the roof of my truck). Replaced the helmet within the week.

in reply to: Anti-doping agents show up at Florida MTB race #112646

I not keen on the "doping" of riders. Look, train the best you can and live with it. However I have always believed there should be two divisions within a sport, those that dope, and those who don’t. I know everyone wants to win, heck if I was faster, stronger, better… I might race. But in the end don’t cheat, and if you do you might as well be proud of what you are taking. At least let science in on it so they can say, wow that works, and nope it did not. Hey check out that tumor….

Your Welcome, just wondering, did I see you on the mmba site too?

in reply to: Tubes- presta or schrader? #91517

Agreed, as long as you do not forget your pump. The Serfas pump I bought works great, and better still it changes to what ever style valve you have. My mini pump you have to flip the guts around. I would rather not have to deal with that. However until I buy a $1000 bike or over. I keep my schraders

Seems like I have done this thread a good service. One of the things I noticed going through the threads, is multiple threads on the same subject. I do not want to add all the "new fork, replacement fork, or tires threads. And I wonder if some should be deleted? I have been riding for the last two years. 631 miles last year and the 602 miles as of today. I have found that my home trail though not the most hardcore trail is getting be my favorite. And since I have started to get defensive about it, I consider it mine. It also helps I but in time on maintenance as well. I have enjoyed other trails, glad mine "home trail" does not get jealous, and someone else has labored on that one. Feels like I am giving a little back.

in reply to: what kind of camera do you use? #77555

I use a Swann Freestyle HD (like a GoPro with more stuff) and I have a Nikon 8100. Which only recently scratched the lens. The 8100 has had a hard life in the Fire Department. I camera has taken a pretty good beating and still take great photos. My Freestyle will take 8M still and HD video. I like the LCD screen and wireless remote. They were included. And I think it’s shoots the same quality video as a GoPro Hero. However the Hero 2 has a much better lens

I’ve always run presta tubes. The bikes came thay way so I stayed that way. I also had a wheel builder tell me that the larger hole for the schrader tube made the wheels weaker and more prone to cracking especially if you drill out the holes to fit. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 😄 Later,

I am 245 pounds and had my rims bored out for Schrader valves. I ride pretty hard and have had no problems. I was all go with the presta valves until I forgot my pump and my adapter. All while staring at the airchuck and the gas station. both schrader tubes the next day. Some guy commented I added add grams to my bike (Scott Aspect Trail 29er), My responds was, "at 245 pounds, gram don’t mean sh*t"!

in reply to: Eggbeaters vs SPDs #97637

Had spd’s now I have Candy’s. Love the float and the ease of getting out of them. 245 pounds of wind and thunder (me gasping for air and the sound my feet make). I not planning on going back to spd’s.

in reply to: Advice on computer #102467

I love my Bell F20. It is wired and works great. No issues. I mountain bike so I do not need a sensor for my petals. It also helps me track mileage for maintenance. If you have a smart phone there are several "apps" to get. They also keep track of your GPS trail which is kind of neat. If you use more than one, i.e. computer and GPS, you will notice they do not match. Or at least I have never been able to get them too. By the way I use MOVE! Bike computer and started using Strava. And also use the training section with membership on Singletracks.

in reply to: Helmet cameras are getting ridiculous #105057

I purchased a Swann Freesytle an like it. I do not need a camera to stream live to the internet. I have heard the footage, and all you hear is this big guy breathing hard. Not what you want to listen to on a 20 mile ride. It do like to capture the trail and allow other people to view trails they have not ridden. But need to be dubbed with something other than me breathing. I would suspect you could watch the video to see a better line or where you are making mistakes. But streaming online most weekend rides should be boring to someone that would rather stay inside and watch videos of people actually doing stuff outside.

in reply to: Anyone ever use a pressurize hydration pack? #109105
    "kevine3" wrote

With bladders you can just blow air into them and then the water will squirt out.

My thought exactly. And that is what I do. Also Beer and soda/pop with pressurize your camelback. I put zip ties were the tube connects to the bladder. It kept it from leaking. Also if you put beer in your camel back, plan on the taste in your bladder for a while!

    in reply to: 650b wheels–not half way between 26 and 29 #109761

My first bike had 26" and my second was 29". The first bike corners faster the second was more comfortable. My lap times was very close to the same. I will also mention the 29er does not get unsettled as much (hardtail rider) when I have ridden fast rooty sections. I do not want to buy a bike a year. The wife will kill me! However I will ride one and see. If the 650b is halfway as the "seat of the pants test" vs the actual dimensions, then I will consider it when my bike is wasted, A country boy can survive, but a working man can only pay for so much.

in reply to: 29er Tires #104661

I have a Wolverine on the rear of my Scott Aspect Trail 29er. I love this tire. I have not ridden on rocks so I cannot comment. I find them fast and grab a hold of everything. However it does claw at slippery and wet top soil, however expect to slide. It does not like the slimy stuff. Hard pack, roots, sand, has good traction and will let you know it is slipping before it gone. It’s low profile seems to be pretty good on pavement as well.

in reply to: Michigan Trails and Conditions #67915

I have ridden Aspen Park, Gaylord; Hanson Hills, Grayling; Louis M Groen, Jo-burg; Shingle Mill Pathway, Vanderbilt and all of them are in good shape. Expect some sand. We have lots of it.
