Cannot wait for the snow to get here!

in reply to: Serious as a Heart Attack #117610

If I understood the article correctly you recently had a heart attack and the last few years you have been healthier, loosing weight, eating right etc.

It is good that people learn from this and I think that if you had not done the healthier lifestyle approach these last few years you may not have recovered.

I have lost friends due to heart attacks and it is one of those areas that you cannot really see how healthy the heart is, it just hits you like a bus, then it hits everyone around you. The heart is still just a muscle, just an important one and from before you are born it beats, it beats every day, other muscles get a rest but the heart keeps going. I think its good to remember it not just what you eat, its how you made it and it is also what you choose to do with it.

I wish you all the best in your recovery and hope you get to return to the trails soon 😀

I am glad it is not like this in the UK, Well yet the number of injury lawyer companies here now is crazy.

in reply to: Hydraulic vs Mechanical disc mountain bike brakes #111818

cables are cheaper and will gradually reduce in effectiveness as the cable becomes worn. Keeping in mind cables do not warn you when they are about to break. replacement parts are cheaper and easier to adjust.

A decent brand of hydraulic breaks will offer better consistent braking power. granted the bleed kits cost a bit but that’s a one of payment as fluid is quite cheap. Bleeding them is very simple. Learning to bleed them is an acceptable sacrifice.

This will come down to where and how you ride. I have a range of conditions and temperature so i go hydraulic.

I usually take flapjacks (oats, sugar, golden syrup) then I remind myself that if I am a good boy I can stop off at the shop and get a bacon and sausage sandwich on the way home 😀

in reply to: Good DH bike that won’t break the bank #112202

I think it depends on the budget.

DH bikes start at £2300, the parts and suspension are not always the best but you can upgrade as needed.

My session 8 was £3400 which i could accept for what i use it for.

I have a small collection of lights from Exposure. Had them a few years and they are surviving better then the bike.

in reply to: Shoulder Protection? #108267

i have the same issue due to having broad shoulders. I just clip them a lot…..it does bring a new definition to tree hugging, or would it be extreme tree hugging?

Troy lee Designs vest armor has shoulder protection and is surprisingly comfortable and light.

in reply to: Do you really need an $8000 MTB? #111644

I would not need as a matter of survival but if the option was there. I probably do not need 3 bikes but I have 3 bikes. I do not buy mountain bikes and equipment out of need its more because it is something I love. I may not need it to survive but I still could not live without it. Mountain Biking forms part of my personality and helps define who I am and you cannot put a price on that.

People do not need a £500,000 car but people buy them and you often do not see articles on why or what the need is. I often see articles on why spend so much on a bike which is often due to societies expectations on where a bike fits in the general public’s view of the world. The truth is when it comes to how much to spend on a bike and do you need it, if you ride the bike the way they are designed to be ridden you will not need to ask the question.

    Ok soap box stand down…….

in reply to: Trek Session 8 2012 #111811

Looks like trek have changed the rear shock to the kage. only about £120 difference 😀. The reduction was a sale, how annoying if I waited 4 months I could have saved £800

in reply to: Trek Session 8 2012 #111810

The reduction is still for the 2012 model, the same as mine and the 2013 model has not been released yet. I do not remember seeing them advertised either. They were still trying to get rid of the 2011 models when I purchased mine, just missed out on a session 88 2011, was disappointed.

in reply to: toes going numb – Clipless Question #110170

You may want to look at the SPD shoe as well as most of them are designed for road use. The shoes I originally had caused toe pain and numbness as they were road shoes.

You may need a wider sole version for MTB as we do tend to shift our weight to the front of our feet.

Only three bikes? That’s crazy! Is it home-owners insurance? I need to look into that also.

Home contents insurance does not cover it, a typical policy only goes up to the value of £500 maximum.

Because of the value of the bikes I have to take separate insurance out from Cycle Guard

    [url:m9vsoqsl]http://www.cycleguard.co.uk/home.asp?gclid=CMij1diq668CFaImtAodQ1Bv1w[/url:m9vsoqsl]

They cover theft of the bikes, damage to the bikes, public liability insurance, being hit by an uninsured driver, break down recovery, accident cover and a lawyer. They also cover competitions

I think they are UK only though so may need to look around.

I ride my Specialised XC Full Sus or the Specialised S-works Stumpjumper Full Sus depends where I am going. Although I just got a Trek Session 8 and I am still in the process of beating it into submission.

My bike room in the house is getting a bit full, so no more bikes for a bit as my insurance policy only lets me have three. (bike insurance people are clearly not mountain bikers themselves!)

Ordered mine now! just got to wait for the post to the uk part….

in reply to: How much does your XC Mountain Bike weigh? #96050

i know my bike is lighter than my two locks that i use to keep the bike mine….

in reply to: Singletracks Jerseys #94666

Yey, do you post to the UK?

in reply to: Is MTBing really all that "Green?" #94555

I don’t drive so i either use the train and/or cycle everywhere.

I still manage to cycle to work partly, 16Miles in 15Mins. Trying to beat the bus that takes people from the station to the industrial park, it does it in 12 but does an extra 2 miles.

Most people in the office don’t cycle because its too cold or its raining, i just accept it and do it (its Britain after all)

in reply to: upgrading my brakes #93961

one thing i noted with V Brakes and Disc is the weather. The UK air is quite damp and i noticed that when V brakes get wet and the rims they tend to stay wet longer than disc as discs heat up easily.

end result being i dont tend to have breaks that stop working when in the rain or ploughing through muddy puddles giggling (puddles is compulsory, giggling is optional).

in reply to: Freezing fork!? #93876

when i was ridding through snow in the recent cold spell in the UK (fun by the way) the triad 2 was alot softer then normal, at first i thought i had just put weight on but once the air in the shock warmed up it was fine.
