  • Almost hit one last month if it had jumped across the trail a few seconds earlier it would have knocked me right off my bike.

Ive always seen it as a homage thing. I didnt realize their HQ was so close to his hometown though.

Yeah, I really should get a torque wrench. Lesson learned the hard way. Ill have to check out the IceToolz. Ive seen the prest ones, I like the idea of having a few of those versus an adjustable though.

Thanks for the info Mike, Im definitely gonna check that out.

Thanks for the input guys, theyve been swapped for the stock aluminums. You guys are right, no need to risk safety. Bought those with store credit I got for buying the bike, part of the black friday special they were running. So not the worst loss. Ill have to be more careful in the future with carbon bars If I chose to try them again. They spun when i nose dived off a drop and went OTB. Think they were tight enough and it was just the excessive force of my weight that caused them to spin? Maybe they should’ve been tighter?

What do you mean by using the car wash to clean it? Are you taking it to one of those self-serve, high pressure wash stations?

Yeah, I use the “Spot Free Rinse” setting though, and even squeezing the trigger it comes out at a much lower pressure. It doesn’t wash out grease, I’ve pulled things apart and checked before out of curiosity.

Dr sweets , my bike would definitely be a candidate for sun fading as I always transport it on the back of my civic, Ill have to look up pictures of the fading and patina, I’m curious. I’d be apprehensive to use brushes on it because even a microfiber cloth leaves a strange shiny-ness so I’ve stopped using anything to wipe it. But Ill have to grab some wash from the local LBS, I’ve only ever used auto soap. Id be curious to see if it works any better.

Head Over Handlebars , I definitely prefer a gloss too, wish I could’ve gotten black and green! I wanted the 2018 Cavendish Green model but the price on the 2017 was right and I got 600$ store credit because it was black Friday. The finish is quite thin for Specialized matte paint, Ive heard its because of the weight and to display the layup. I could care less about either of those things.

Im not “hardcore” per se, but on a trail like that Im around 10-12 on my XC hardtail. Depends on how tired I am from work, lol.

in reply to: What's with the new boom box trend? #239806

Ran into this a couple times. One guy was blaring that dubstep house music stuff and my god i wanted to push him over. I like the wildlife and the sound of my bike. Part of the joy of riding for me.

in reply to: Bike Racks #239712

I’ve got a Saris Freedom rack and it sits kinda low compared to other racks and it only holds on by your tires. I could only recommend this as an mtb rack as its works regardless of frame design. Being as light as it is it does do some wobble side to side without a stabilizer strap(30 lbs trail bike). It will fatigue at some point and probably break. I do hope to catch the wear on the support bar before that happens. So with everything being said, i would steer clear of the Saris Freedom unless your bike is light(24lbs under) and you don’t want to run stabilizer straps. Forgot to mention, it has two built in lock-able cables and a bottle opener that makes your beer explode when using it due to the angle you have to open it at. If your bike is 24lbs or less it will provide a low platform that doesn’t touch your frame. It also does NOT fold up towards the vehicle like Thule racks I’ve seen. Its doesn’t touch your frame though, so that might be worth something.

in reply to: Wear earbuds riding on the trail? #239711

Would not be able go ride with earbuds in. I like the sound of my tires and hubs and chain rattle, the birds the squirrels rustling off the side, hearing another rider saying they need to pass. I remember being towards the top of a long climb. Lungs heaving, in my lowest gear struggling to get to the top. Behind me, out of what seemed like nowhere, a man charging up the hill behind me with a HUGE backpack playing what can be best described as techno bing-bong music. Came out of nowhere and scared the hell out of me. After he passed I couldn’t believe that somebody would play music on a loud speaker on a public MTB trail. I consider it rude to do that. The only thing less rude is a hipster trying to make it up a climb with two earbuds in and is hat turned backwards in front of your while your trying to pass him and thinking he heard you (not realizing that his earbuds were in) wind up buzzing his tire thinking he’s about to let letting you pass, both crashing and ruining your STRAVA TIME!!! Just kidding, Im not that crazy about my strava but you need to be aware at all times on the trail. Earbuds tends to hinder that, just like being distracted when your driving.

in reply to: When did you start mountain biking? #239710

I started 2 years ago, 2 hardtails both wrong fit and sold to me with excitement cuz my bike shops suck. Currently ride a ’17 Camber CC Large, fits like a glove( got it at a good price) and wish i didnt just use an MTB( department store) purely for transport as a kid/teen. At this point MTB’ ing is my life in a nutshell(tech, races, R&D, componentry, technique) , wishing I went to college and didnt work hard labor so i could enjoy my sport without a 1/4 botlle of ibuprofen per ride day. 24 Years old, stay in school kids.

Pull back on the bars, not up.

    in reply to: 26" or 29" and 1×11 or 2×10? #239707

It really depends on terrain and intentions with wheel size. You will carry much more speed on a 29er on that sort of terrain.  29er was great for me, its speedy and eats up rocks and roots pretty well with 120mm front and back, fork is currently a bit overly progressive right now though. 27.5 should really be your other consideration though(vs 26″), as its currently the smaller standard. Trails around me are mostly XC style. That being said, after coming off my 2×11 hardtail the 1×11 has been nice. Not having to tune two derailleurs. Sometimes though, I still hit my dropper thinking its going to drop me down to a 24T chainring, haha. I run a 28T ring with a 11-42T cassette and its fine. Considering a 11-46 to make the long techy climbs a bit easier. The 11-42 is fine though, just requires a little extra effort on said sections. I went with a L (about 18.5) and im 5’11 with a 32″ inseam. With sizing as long, as you can run your preferred stem length and bar combo with enough post I think your good(for Trail/XC riding). Ive got a couple inches of post left (dropper) and 70mm stem with 760mm bars (20mm rise). It lifts on climbs but ive been welcoming it on the techy stuff, when i need pure uphill power i just drop to an elbows down position and its fine.

in reply to: Got a "home" trail? #238899

“Brighton Recreation Area” in MI has got great trails and its the closest trail to me, 10 miles. 2 miles of green trail 9.5ish miles of blue and 7.5 miles of black. They were the trails that I first rode when I got into mountain biking, always my go to.

in reply to: Your favorite bike trails in Michigan #213296

If your in the near the Brighton area I would check out Murray lake at the rec area, its not shared with hikers which is nice, its 9 miles with an extra loop at the back not marked on the trail map. Torn shirt is there too, I rode it last year and it was fun, a couple small drops. I rode it shortly after i first started mountain biking, so it was challenging for me. Potawatomi is a great trail too. I just rode highlands MTB trails yesterday and I wasnt a fan, theres no where to build speed and riding a hardtail it was just physical punishment. I hear good things about the Pontiac lake trail, thats my next destination
