  • in reply to: What are your mountain biking goals for 2017? #210583

In October, there is a 33 mile race I want to do.  Starts out at 4900′ goes up to 7400′, then down to 4000′ in a small town.  It’s the Silver Peak or Bust event.  People get sponsors to donate money to the school for after school activities.

It’s always been a hike, but last year started the first MTB to do it.  So, I want to continue it on MTB.

Google Silver Peak or Bust, you’ll find the info on Facebook.

in reply to: Anyone buy a bike from Bikes Direct? #207726

I bought the FSX 27.5 “Gravity” full suspension model in August.  ($449 USD)

I’ve got about 400 miles on it so far, this is what’s broke:

    1. Headset is shot, need a new one.   Too loose or it binds, no happy medium.

    2. Front cranks bent. ( sun tour ).  I straightened them with a spanner.

    3. Mech Disc Brakes, they are a pain.  Constant adjustments and sometimes it starts squealing during a ride.

    4. Pogo Stick rear shock.  I replaced it with a DNM that was .5″ longer.  Works great.

    5. Both original tubes have been replaced, high desert and cactus.

But for my first mountain bike at age 45, I’m happy with it.  It’s been crashed pretty damn hard so far, and it gets 90% off road or single/dual track trips,  very little asphalt or pavement.  It is kinda heavy, but I don’t care for just exercise and fun activities.

Since it’s winter, I haven’t had a lot of miles on the new shock yet.  Waiting for a little better weather to try that out.

If I were to do it again…..

I would get the one with the tapered 1.125->1.5″ head tube.   Better fork shock upgrade options in future.   I’d also get one with a wider seat post diameter, at least 30mm, 27.6 is too hard to find a decent dropper post.  If I decided to upgrade the bike, I might just order the frame from them and get a new fork, rebuild the whole bike.

    I’d rate it 7/10.

I think I’ll put those mechanical dual caliper brakes on the rear, since that’s the one that squeals the most when you are just trying to bleed off a little speed.  Full braking it’s fine, but just trying to loose a little speed, makes a hell of a noise.

in reply to: Tubeless MTB tires: Should the bead "pop"? #205134

I did get it to 50, then put in the valve stem.  Then I pumped it back to 50 psi with track pump and bounced it around, lay on box, like the video show.  It’s probably not a UST/tubeless rim.  I misread that somewhere in the Chinese documentation.

I have an obstacle course around the perimeter of the property that I can test out on.  Just rock gardens and logs.  It’s set it to my favored pressure ~25 psi and give ‘er a few runs later.

    Thanks for the responses!

I used two little bottles of the sealant I got a bike shop when I was on a riding trip.

It looks like it is holding air this morning.   I’ll have to wait a while to test it, it’s 17F outside.

Since the rims have no brand on them, and there is sealant coming out of the weld of the rim I would assume this isn’t going to work.  I’ll stay close and as always, have a spare tube.

On second look, nothing says tubeless on the rim or the tire.  I don’t remember where I saw “tubeless ready”.  I just got tired of buying expensive tubes just to have cacti wreck ’em every 50 miles.  So this post should be renamed “Ghetto Tubeless”.

in reply to: Anyone ever order from Tree Fort Bikes? #205088

Yes, I have.  I ordered a new derailleur for an old MTB.  It was shipped quickly, the staff even helped me (on the phone) figure out which one to buy for a 6 speed rear freewheel.   I actually installed it today and all is good.  That old MTB is back on the trainer for winter.  (I bought it at a garage sale for $5 – the bike.)  I was very happy with the service and experience and would definitely order from them again.

You don’t want to know how I broke a derailleur on an indoor trainer…   Well, just imagine it fell, and took off at high RPM’s in highest gear and went flying across the living room into a…..

How bad do you want it was good.

I have some goals for next year, and I need to keep up the training during winter, but oh my is it cold out there.   I finished an 11 mile trip on Friday and when I got back to the house it was 28F and pitch black.  I’ll buy something next time I’m in town so I can tolerate those temps a little better.

I just started MTB in August, hadn’t ridden a bike in 20 years before that.  I died after two laps of my property (2/3 mile).  My longest dirt trip so far is about 15 miles with 1000′ of gain, so I’m getting better.  I want to be able to do the annual Silver Peak or Bust run on the bike next October.  It’s 33 miles, 2400′ (elevation gain) straight climb to start, then up/down all around.

I quit smoking back in May, 2015 after 25 years of 2 packs a day.  I vape now, which does generate some laughs when I’m hiking.  I am unable to breath enough during MTB to be able to vape unless it’s real mellow stuff with company.  30 minutes after the trip I can take a drag.  Mountain biking came as a result of quitting smoking, where I live (mountains/valley) and I used to ride a road bike a lot back in the last 80’s and early 90’s.   Used to do 80 miles in a day, once a month.

Seems like us humans are good at finding excuses.  Wind, rain, heat, cold, snow, daylight, time.  Good luck with your efforts to get in shape.  I can’t imagine doing a century at this time.
