Another Georgia rider. 15 mins from FATS. Been riding New Bartrams the most it seems. Hoping to give Turkey Creek, Wine Creek, and Modoc some love this weekend. 😃

I use the Osprey Raptor 14 also. Great all around pack. It has a top pocket that I keep my phone, wallet, etc in… although there is no hole for a headphone cable, I think the way the zipper closes you wouldn’t have a problem running it out there.

Thats exactly how it works. Tested this Sunday and it works as you say. No issues whatsoever….I love my Osprey.

This has been discussed a bajillion times.

Clipless pedals are better than platforms for xc riding. Period. There’s a reason so many people use them. The people that don’t use them are just afraid or ignorant[/color:yw8pmwxs].

Even if you can ride platforms and keep your feet on the pedals, it’s not the same. It takes effort to do so, effort that you could be using to make the bike move forward faster. And you’ll never get the same pedaling efficiency.

For XC riding: clipless pedals > platform pedals

(I BMXed a lot back in the day, so I know how to use platforms. But I know better for mtn biking)

I feel thats an unfair statement. Preference isnt ingorance IMO. I use clipless and Im comfortable doing so. I still tackle trails with platforms though. Its just preference for a certain trail.

Ive been looking at some packs and wondering if the raptor 14 has a place for ipod? Like i seen mule can put ipod on top pouch and has small hole for headphones wire to come thru..

I have the raptor 14. It has a pouch where you can put one but I havent seen a hole for headphones to come out. I usually keep my wallet, itouch (take it so it doesnt get stolen), and my phone in that same pouch.

On a tight singletrack I dont think dogs belong. However, on a double track or even a fire road I think it is ok. My lab tries to eat my feet while I pedal so she isnt a good biking partner. However, when I go running or swimming in the river she is the perfect companion on or off the leash. She is 100lbs so people are very intimidated by her so I keep her on a leash a lot.

Well, do not have any pics currently, but I sport my Singletracks decals on all my chain stays on the rear end of my steeds, on my battle wagon (car), on two of my skid lids, and also on one frame. I show my love! Do you?

I still have a small handful of these decals, so if anyone that did not receive any, give me a shout and I will send of a few out per request.

I’m planning on riding at Mistletoe State Park on Saturday morning if anyone is interested in joining me. I haven’t ridden there before so I’m stoked to see what it’s about (though it’s always tough to pass up a ride at FATS when I’m in the area).

I have to work Saturday. 😳

I rode FATS at 330 yesterday and almost died from the heat. Usually it doesnt bother me but at the trailhead I realized I was really weak, depth perception was off, focusing was really hard, and that I was a slight disoriented. I had water all day, had 3 liters with me, ate a good lunch, and a snack on the ride there…..I walked the last two miles. I was serioulsy starting to get scared. I made it though and now know my limits when it comes to the heat. Even walking the last two miles I made it back to the car in an hour, of course I was just happy making it back to the car. 😆

I use the Camelbak Lobo right now. Before that I had a Camelbak Rocket. I think the Rocket fit better and I liked the insulated tube. It had a smaller resevoir though and very minimal storage though. I upgraded to the Lobo for more storage. As I said, I don’t think it fits as well, the tube is not insulated, there is no clip for the tube, and the mouthpiece leaks if I don’t lock it out. I use it regularly and it gets me by. I’ve heard a lot about the Osprey packs. I may be checking those out next time I am in the market.

I took my Osprey (Ratpor 14) to a DMB show Tuesday night and people were jealous I had such an awesome idea. It held my blanket (rolled up and clipped to the outer storage clip. Not really a pocket.), three t-shirts, 3 water bottles (couldnt take in my reservoir), camera, keys, my wallet, and me and my g/fs sunglasses. Id be lost without my Osprey. 😆

I am familiar with that area. I work at JHL right down the street from Augusta Christian and I went to EHS. ‘Fakeside’ was a heated rival (but never in Football 😆 ). I grew up in Columbia County if you couldnt tell lol. Check out that site listed, it will also have a trails list similar to what you find here but with a lot more input in the forums about conditions and such.

good luck. I dont know where you are located but this is the closest to me and they do fabulous work. I have NEVER had any personal experience but a buddy of mine did and raved about it. Hope your experience is as good.

in reply to: Just picked up my first loaner bike #91068

my loaner bike is a "next" that was my g/f’s and Im gonna spray it matte black. its a sled. Im upgrading my Haro now so my g/f will a have a nice bike once I buy a newer bike in the next 5-6 months.

in reply to: Trek or Specialized #91053

I want a Trek 6500 or Trek 8000 (leaning towards this one, nicer components) something fierce. What I ride and how I ride does not require a FS so a nice Hardtail is my next purchase.

I think either bike would be good for you. I have some friends that swear by Specialized.

in reply to: whether the weather will ever let me ride #91027

if it rains here i ride the pavement for a little bit. I never ride the trails after a good rain, it destroys every single persons hard work that goes into maintaining it and creating it. I dont know if everywhere is the same but you shouldnt ride most of the trails (in my area) after a good rain. Usually in the afternoon the ground is dried up but its best to use common sense when you get to the trail head or respect the signs (closed/open) if up.

Pisgah is a NF with 400ish miles of trails open to bikes in it.

Best riding east of the Mississippi, hands down, IMHO.

I am sure there are videos. Some trail names to look for video of are Squirrel Gap, Laurel Mtn, Pilot Rock for starters. These three are stellar, but many others are too.

Last time I had a hardtail up there, I felt like I had a knife at a gunfight. But that said, I know people who ride fully rigid in Pisgah. I think they are a little crazy.

Pisgah is not for everyone. If Modoc gives you any trouble, Pisgah is completely out the league of Modoc in terms of elevation gain, loss and the chunkyness in which you experience this elevation change.

I havent rode modoc yet but Im hoping to catch the next "explore the trail" out there, I will decide then on whether to tackle Pisgah lol. As for most riders in CSRA, FATS has me spoiled. 😆
you are so lucky. Im about 5 hours from Asheville. When I had my full suspension, asheville, greeneville, and Boone were the places we would ride. We would camp all weekend and then ride during the day. I was in high school/college so I dont remember trail names……..did a lot of drugs back then too. ………….great effin memories bro, so jealous.

North Augusta, SC is 3 hours away from riding in Pisgah NF around Brevard, Hendersonville.

Did it last weekend. Have done it alot. 3 hours to singletrack. Asheville proper is another 30 minutes up the road. But the best riding is 3 hours from North Augusta.[/quote:381v3tzw]

I was reading on the sorba site about it, I want to scope it out for sure but I want to upgrade my front fork and brakes first, hoping to do both next month.

Are there videos up of the Pisgah trail? Whenever I hear technical I get a little worried but I try not to hike and bike at all. Most technical stuff, for me, isnt that technical, but my equipment doesnt help much lol.

Thanks brother! Yeah, I am soooo stoked over the DH parks in the Boone area and just 2hrs away is Windrock in TN. That place is killer riding! Another great thing is Pisgah and Dupont in the area as well for some AM riding scene. I also like the fact of Paris Mountain and Clemson around Greenville, SC just an hour drive south of Asheville. Damn am I stoked! Look forward to some camping and hiking as well, but the river rafting sounds awesome as well, though I have never did anything like that. The greatest part of it all is just living in the mountains again and my son having super great opportunities to expand his riding future and skills to a much greater level. I would like to get him started on the DH grom racing scene once we get established up there. Maybe once we get up there we could hook up and get some shredding sessions in. 😄[/quote:16izju91]

hells yeah! Im not huge into DH but Ive been known to hit drops of 2′-4′ on my hardtail. Maybe I will have my new bike then too!

in reply to: Trying to find wheels #90886

noob question, how can you tell. I didnt see anything that said ‘double walled’ or anything.

in reply to: Trying to find wheels #90884

are these double walled rims? Hell, Id replace my rims now for that price. Good find. I dont know my spoke count or if the hub is transferrable but I would do more digging if they are double walled rims.

in reply to: Hydration/ Backpacks #90786

I live on the SC/GA border so the heat and humidity are horrible here as well.

I have had Camelbaks in the past but now I use an Osprey Raptor 14 and its the best pack I have ever bought and it was 100 bucks. 3L bladder with enough storage room to carry all your gear and possible your buddys. Great fit and durable.

My buddy runs a MULE and loves it. I don’t have a link bc I’m posting from my phone but google will reveal all! Lol.

in reply to: New to this whole deal. #90764

i dont want other riders to vomit so I keep my shirt on and I always wear a helmet on trails so I dont have to use leaves and pine straw to keep my brain from falling out.

However, on the greeneway or our canal ride, I dont wear a helmet bc I am usually working on pedaling and staying below 7 mph.
