When did mountain biking really "click" for you? When you realized what part of it you really enjoy, and why?
For me, it happened about 6 months after I started riding. I signed up for the 49er Ride (my computer shows 50…but, same difference). The longest I’d ever ridden was only about 30 miles. This ride is a point to point ride, connecting several trails together using gravel and paved roads. It was organized as sort of an underground event. Show up, donate $25 to SORBA-CSRA, and we’ll give you a map.
That ride kicked my butt. I don’t think I’ve ever hurt so bad on a ride as I did that day. By the time we were approaching the last trail, some 40ish miles in, I was hurting everywhere. My legs hurt, my neck hurt, my lower back hurt. I couldn’t tell where my butt ended and the seat began. It hurt to sit. It hurt to stand. It REALLY hurt to go from seated to standing.
I had decided to bail, skip the last trail, and take the road to the car. But my buddy I was riding with (who was hurting just as bad as I was) was like "nah, come on man, we’ve went this far, might as well finish." So we did. We had somewhere close to 6hrs of moving time on the bike I think. I’ve never been happier to see my car in whole life. Didn’t think I’d ever want to ride again.
But before we finished the half hour drive home, I was already thinking about how I could do that ride faster and in less pain 😼
That was the ride that got me hooked on long distance stuff. I really enjoy seeing how far I can push myself. Several years ago I’d have never thought I could ride those kinds of distances. I don’t get a chance to do those big rides often, but when I do, I love it, even if I am suffering badly by the end.

I’m not sure I can pinpoint a moment, but it’s always been floating around out there. I grew up riding BMX style bikes, bought my first "mountain bike" from a department store close to 20 years ago, and bought a Specialized a few years after that. For me though, I think it only really took hold in the last few years as certain things fell into place. I’ve lived in the same place now for 7 years, my interests and motivations have shifted over time, I made a couple of friends with bikes and a moderate interest in mountain biking, we started riding a little, became more aware of the trail networks in the area (and beyond), and most importantly rode more and more over time. Before we knew it, BLAMMO! We were completely obsessed. I’ve had my new bike about a year now (hardtail) and am keen to get into the FS world one of these days.

Whenever I realized that I could cover a lot more ground on a mountain bike than I could walking with a mountain board, and when I realized I could bomb down hills a whole lot faster and I wouldn’t have to worry about speed wobbles.
I’ve got a need for speed! 😼

Mine was when I was riding with a friend on a trail I didn’t know. It was a trail he a ridden (Even built part of) 100’s of times. He was riding lead and I was following. He would give me tipps about features as we went.
Then we came up to this drop to a creek crossing at the top of a 3′ waterfall. He yells back, DON’T Break, Let you bike do what it is supposed to do, Just guide it and let it follow you…..
That’s when I learned how to TRULEY Trust my bike, Thats when I found out what it feels like to be in control of something out of control (Stolen form which movie?).

Let me rephrase that, "You [i:2lpaux7j]fellow[/i:2lpaux7j] redneck". Anyone who can quote Days of Thunder gets automatic redneck status. It might as well be a Jeff Foxworthy joke!
