Ok, well I had a rather interesting experience while riding this morning. First off let me tell you that the trail I was on is surrounded on all sides by city and is about the only wooded area for a couple of miles. So, here goes.
I had just started getting loosened up. Usually takes a mile or two. The section I was on was flat and fairly straight, so I got going a bit fast. I took a blind turn and ran into a group of deer. I don’t know what it was, whether I was just quiet or if they were deaf. I literally rode into a doe, I bounced off of her side. Luckily I missed her fawn but I hit a tree pretty hard. Got scraped up but managed to see them bounding off into the thicket. I couldn’t help but laugh, get up and start riding again. I was a bit slower after that. Later, I ran over a squirrel, almost sprayed by a skunk, and gathered a bunch of spiders. I think I need to wait for someone else to ride the trails first. Other than a few "incidents" it was a good ride. What have y’all come across? -
I see deer all the time at one of my local riding areas. These deer are in a popular riding area and don’t seem bothered by our riding. Some of the ass***** yell at them but the deer know they are faster in the woods than we are and don’t need a trail. When a deer dosen’t want to be messed with it can become invisible instantly. 😄 Later,

I was riding in Keystone when a bear ran out in front of us! He just ran into some bushes and hung out there for a while 😮

I do a lot of riding on a Nature Preserve where the deer are protected. I see them frequently (sometimes feet in front of me) and by the time I reach my camera, it’s too late.
Other than that, I have only seen the suicide chipmunk that runs straight for my wheels.

HAHAH what a ride ! Nothing that interesting, usually Deer but they are farther away, normal squirrels and chipmunks and a few snakes.

i’ve seen a few deer near tallahassee, but most of the wildlife i’ve come across is at Alachua (san felasco hammock preserve in central fl). I almost had an incident like yours where I came barrelling around a conner to find 5 or six does (plural for doe?) just lounging about. I almost hit one of them and I think they were just as supprised to see me as I was to see them. i thought that was kind of odd too because normally they hear you way before you hear or see them. That same ride actually I accidentally ran over a wicked looking black snake, thought it was a root untill i was right on top of it (which by then it was too late). Other than deer the occasional snake (once i could swear i saw a turkey out of the corner of my eye) it’s mostly just ticks and chiggers. I’m crossing my fingers that one of these days I’ll run into a swamp ape but no luck yet ha ha.

oh almost forgot, lots of armadillos in central fl too. they’re actually really annoying on the trail because they’re practically blind so they never move out of the way. i’ve almost wrecked a couple times trying to avoid them.

What have y’all come across?Had about the same thing happen but I didnt run into them physically,I might have touched one with my front wheel possibly.I was riding late one night right when it was getting dark and I didnt have my lights,before I could make it back to the parking lot it got pitch dark,came over a hill and heard somthing snorting to what seemed like inches away,then I could feel the vibration of hooves in the ground,had to have been deer.I was riding pretty slow because it was so dark so I immediately stopped when I heard the snorting and froze.Scared the crap out of me….hahahahahahahaha

I’ve seen deer, rattlesnakes, prairie dogs, bison and last weekend, a moose.

I seen a moose,but I was in the work truck up in Evergreen madd,hahahahaahaha…Damn thing was taller than the box truck I was driving… 😮

While biking I’ve seen:
A Black Bear 😮
Moose (technically on the road up to the trailhead)
Bobcat
Whitetail Deer
Turkeys
Snapping turtles
Grouse
countless squirrels
plenty of spiders, INCLUDING a black widow
probably lots of other stuff I’m forgettingOff the bike i’ve also seen a mountain lion, elk, and mule deer. Still want to add a Grizzly Bear and a Wolf to this list, but preferably from the car! As for rattle snakes, I have no desire to EVER see one!

My riding buddy came upon a black bear 50 ft away a couple weeks ago on a trail right IN the city 😮
These were 2 sightings last week, we were about 3 ft from these babies.

I meant to say, I’ve seen deer and antelope, and they were playing while the buffalo was roaming. 😆

There are a few threads on here about some great wildlife encounters – I think everyone’s had one or two. I’ve been charged by a deer and had a wild turkey try to make me it’s bi– never mind.
I’ve come across numerous deer in New England – every three rides or so. Saw a brown bear off in the distance up in VT, had many wild turkey encounters, a bunch of garden snakes, suicidal chipmunks and squirrels a plenty, some great hawk viewing, a bald eagle in Boxboro, MA, and more dogs and horses than I can shake my handlebars at. 😀

A few years back I was riding in Park City when I came around a blind corner and into a young moose, scared the bejeezus out of us both, he went down trail and I went back up to the next connecting trail! 😆
Other than that experience it has always been a good distance between me and the wildlife, but I have seen deer, squirrels, chipmonks, snakes and a plethora of birds. Seen a black bear once when riding in Colorado Springs on Cpt. Jacks, but it was a good distance away.

I was coming over the top of a hill next to a marsh when I saw this large stick ahead of me. At about 4 feet away I realized that stick had a hoove on one end and a bone on the other! Turned out to be a deer’s leg that had been ripped out around the hip area (still pretty fresh too from the color of the blood, poor deer)… Needless to say I got out of there fast and kept my ears wide open the rest of the ride. Freaked me out big time!

I see snakes (including rattlesnakes) all the time. We don’t have chipmunks but our squirrels are suicidal. Birds are expected, as are spiders, Oh and we have A LOT of lizards. I just wasn’t expecting to see deer. Scared the crap outta me. I’m just glad it wasn’t a bunch of hog. Those things are mean.

Ha, we got you guys beat…LOL! We run into Gators & Crocodiles (south FL) all the time riding on the back trails. You know, those bigger than a lizard, lizards…LOL
Yeah, deer, snakes (moccasins are the worst), suicidal squirrels, black bears, and the hogs (boar). Some times we will get a bit lucky and come across a FL panther or even a bobcat, or at least in the mere existence of them.

On the usual trails in my neck of the woods you never really see much other than the typical squirrels that don’t jump out of the way until the last second. Once or twice I’ve seen a few turtles, but never seen any deer.

The coolest thing I’ve seen was a beaver on a night ride next to the river. We came up on him fast and he actually stood his ground in the middle of the trail slapping his tail at us. We just stopped, let him have his moment (while we pointed and laughed lol) and then he finally slid down the bank into the water.
Seeing deer is pretty much guaranteed on most rides here. I’ve also seen a couple bald eagles and some rather large hawks.

It’s been too dry here for turtles but we’ve had a strangely large number of moths…kinda creepy when you can hear them fly around you.

I ride probably 5 days a week in the mountains here in Colorado and usually I’ll see at least one deer a day, usually like 5 or 6 deer. I’ve seen elk (I grazed one with my knee 😮 ), they are huge. There is a wild dog that I always see roaming around the mountains in various spots, its huge, white and fast, I’ll have to get a pic some day. On monday I was riding a single track around dusk with my light on, and the trail opened up a bit and about 100 yards away I saw what looked like two glowing tennis balls, sort of dancing. As I got closer I saw it was a mountain lion! Pretty intimidating.
In Alaska I saw killer whales and sperm whales while on a killer single track along the coast. I also saw a group of grizzlies from ~150 yards on the same ride. -
Red Rocks trail here in Colorado has bats,when riding at night with lights,the bugs follow the light and the bats follow the bugs,and a lot of times the bats wings will hit your helmet and/or your face…haahha

I’ve always thought one of the coolest things about mountain biking is the wildlife and scenery you get riding in the back country. Since I normally ride solo, I’m always coming up on something on the trail. Deer, turkey and grouse are common in my area. As are black bear. I usually spook up one or two a year. My girlfriend and I have twice ridden up on mothers with cubs, which is quite disconcerting. Maybe thats why she won’t ride with me anymore (she says its the climbing) 😆 The neatest thing I saw was at Carvins Cove. I was climbing Brushy Mountain fire road and saw this tail sticking up in the distance. I was thinking coyote, but when I got closer I see a large bobcat. He turns and sees me and darts up in the woods. When I get to where he was, i look up in the woods and there he is sitting on his butt and staring at me (taste like chiken? 😃 ) We exchange stares for a minute or so and then he takes off. I am still mad at myself for not having my camera that day. He had all these cool facial markings and he was bigger than any I have ever seen mounted. Rare to see them, especially in the daytime.

Came apon a doe in the trail yesterday. The doe was eating some plants and munching away. I got fairly close before she looked up. The doe was startled turned quickly and bounded forward into a small sapling turned again saw me again and bolted in another direction with no tree and was gone. Maybe deer need tree detectors. Huh? 😄 Later,

Yeah, just being in nature is probably the main reason I switched from BMX to MTB. Bobcats are crazy, I’ve never seen one on a ride, but I saw one on deer hunt when I was 16 or so, and I’ve wanted one as a pet ever since.
Also, if anybody ever gets the chance, go biking in Alaska, you are guaranteed to see bald eagles, probably even see them grab some fish. I’ve never been riding on inland Alaska, just costal and a few trails on the Aleutian islands, and every trail I saw an animal I’d never seen before, it was amazing. You can’t be afraid to eat a few thousand mosquitoes though 😃 -
I ride a lot in a state park and see a lot of what would be expected: deer, turtles, hawks, an owl at least once, snakes, chipmunks, and as with most folks lots of squirrels and spiders.
I do think I saw a bobcat a few weeks ago, but I can’t confirm. If it wasn’t some wild cat though, I’m not sure what it was. It scurried away in the brush and by the time I came to a stop, there was no sign of it.
This week we were riding and a storm was moving in. The sky darkened to the point it was hard to see the trail in some sections, the wind picked up, and the air cooled. As we hustled back toward the trailhead I noticed little frogs jumping out of the way. They were all over the place. The whole scene felt very…um, biblical.
Oh, and I did see a nice big hawk fly off about 10 feet off the ground earlier in that ride. Always enjoy those brief moments.

Green Mtn. I saw coyotes running down the mtn right across the trail where I was just learning that the girl wandering through the feild down below us was looking for her 1 year old pup that she didn’t have on a leash,then another coyote came stelthily bounding through the high grass heading to the same spot the other coyote ws headed.Poor girl was sobbing her eyes out,but never did find her puppy…..

When I read this post friday night, I honestly thought there’s no way you could barrel down a mountain or hill and deer wouldn’t hear you until you’re on them. Sat morning at Croft State Park in Spartanburg, SC, I was humming my own little tunes riding, went around a corner and about eight deer were probably ten feet away. Took off before I realized what happened. I was wrong. lol 😆

Checkout what I saw on the trail today:
A rattlesnake! A timber rattler, to be more precise. I’ve ever seen one before! I stayed a good ways back (didn’t take this photo), but I could definitely make out the rattles on his tail as I rode past!

My wife and I almost stepped on a small rattler the first night we were up in Helen, GA. It was small, only about 15" long. Blended into the road very well (sun just set). Second rattler I have seen in the wild, first was a huge one at FATS.

Up here in Alaska I have a moose or other wild life sighting on almost every ride and I’ve had a couple close calls with our furry friends.
One day I was coming down a local trail (STA Trails) and rounded a banked curve hauling butt. As soon as I came out of the curve there was the biggest Bull Moose I’ve ever seen, maybe twenty feet in front of me straddling the trail. I slammed on my brakes as hard as I could and laid the bike down. The sound of my tires trying to get traction was enough to spook him and he jumped off the trail but not fast enough, my helmet hit his ankle right as I slid past where he had meen standing. Luckily he just kept walking.
There was another time, a couple of years ago, a buddy and I were ridding Johnston Pass Trail (this is a true wilderness trail miles from anywhere). We stopped for some water about five miles in, I looked back down the trail as I drank and noticed two black faces looking at us from the woods about thirty feet away. We quickly got back on our bikes and took off, the two black bears followed us for about a mile, trotting behind us on the trail and they finally got bored and disappeared into the woods.

We’ve got these lizards that have a green body and really long red tails. They’re so cool looking and all over the place there. I’ll have to get a pic sometime.

lmao! That would be kind of intimidating, you know those bears could catch up with you if they really wanted.
I was riding through my neighborhood yesterday after class (business law classes in the summer blows!) and I saw a cat running away from a coyote, nothing too unusual. Then a few blocks down I saw the cat standing in the middle of the road. I stopped to text for a second (texting and cycling just sounds dangerous). I looked up and saw the coyote run up from behind and grab the cat right in the neck, there was a small struggle then the coyote (about 65 lbs) carried a limp stray cat back to his den wherever that is. I know it’s not really a wildlife sighting, considering the cat was most likely at some point someone’s pet, but crazy nonetheless. What is going on with the coyotes here? Just a few days ago one hopped a fence and attacked a little boy right in front of his dad! -

Thanks Greg, thats probably it. I keep getting messages to upgrade my browser from Explorer 6.0 (not my call). Should be fixed when I get my new work computer (soon I hope). -

They seems to be pretty passive and I spoke with a Park Ranger who told me that they just try to avoid us. I also got a jabali in the middle of the trail and she didn’t move for about 5 minutes, cutting the way to about 3 of us, and those are pretty aggressive I heard, specially the females, very territorial. Snakes, (rattle snakes) all the time and these are easy to spot since they are pretty large. I will be more worry with bears and cats but we don’t have those in the desert. I’m excited to try Lake Tahoe, but bears are everywhere, I heard.

For the past 6 or 7 years or so coyotes have been moving in. Foxes are also encroaching on downtown, and if you’ve never heard a fox pup call, here’s this:

I’ve never riden Tahoe, but I’ve gone camping there. I’d be more worried about bugs if I were you. -

Snakes, (rattle snakes) all the time and these are easy to spot since they are pretty large. I will be more worry with bears and cats but we don’t have those in the desert. I’m excited to try Lake Tahoe, but bears are everywhere, I heard.

For the past 6 or 7 years or so coyotes have been moving in. Foxes are also encroaching on downtown, and if you’ve never heard a fox pup call, here’s this:

I’d be more worried about bugs if I were you.[/quote:ahtf7amf]Oh, I believe coyotes could be aggressive, here in the Phoenix area, they have longer bodies than some German Shepherds and many times they move in groups, being loud which I think they use as a hunting technique. Few weeks ago, I almost run over one that was crossing the trail and look at me but so far they look like they are pretty passive, at least for now. I am concerned with bears and cats because some recent attacks i saw in tv, I believe in Flagstaff, AZ but of course rattle snakes can be more dangerous if you run over one. Here in AZ, M biking seems to be pretty safe in regards to wild life but it’s always good to be careful and be aware of your surroundings. thanks for the links.

TurkeyBut the most interesting thing I’ve seen was a turtle laying eggs in the middle of the trail at L H Thomson in middle Georgia. I was rounding a turn and getting ready to gun it up a hill when I saw something in the middle of the trail. It turned out to be a large, dinner plate size, turtle that had dug a nest with it’s back feet and was getting ready to lay it’s eggs. Not wanting to interfere, I walked wide around the turtle and proceeded down the trail. On the next loop, the turtle had covered the nest and was starting to head off the trail. Hopefully, the young turtles will be able to get out of the nest and off the trial before someone runs over them.

Lpwn_Ranger, sounds like those coyotes are getting a little too use to humans.
We had a wolf issue up here in Eagle River, just outside of Anchorage a couple of years ago. There was a couple dogs attached by wolves while they were being walked and then a pack of 6 to 7 wolves chased a couple of ladies out jogging up a tree. The wolves chased off their dog and waited at the base of the tree for 2 hours before giving up. There were looking for something bigger then dogs that time. Needless to say the the State opened wolf hunting in the area and we haven’t had any issues since.

Yesterday i had one jump on me when I was riding, first time ever. Later in the day while walking out of a pizza joint I had another small one jump me. Twice in one day………here is a pic of the second ‘jumping"

Yeah, I’ve always assumed the brake rotor squirrel is a photoshop. Clearly though, the submachine gun squirrel is frighteningly real. 😆

@ greg, it is an anole lizard. They grow to be about 4"-5" long. This guy on me and the other that "jumped" me were about an 1.5" long if that.
