Which way to go?

Debating on a new bike as I’m sure I’ll have to make a choice with my $800 budget limit for a new or new to me bike. One of the considerations I’m wondering about is whether it would be better to get a FS with front 3 chainring set or HT with 1 chainring?

Most of my riding is trail. I don’t do much ‘big mountain’ downhill stuff. Most of my riding is in Duluth, MN area and I currently ride a Hard Rock Disc.

at that price point, you’re not likely getting a very good FS bike (all bets are off in the used market, but even a decent used at $800 prolly won’t be great). A good HT is better than a not-so-good FS anyday. I’d go with the HT 1x.

Thanks for the input. I’ll check out the Giant.

Chris, any thoughts on a HT 1x? I’ve struggled to find anything 1x. I’ve seen some 2x; but striking out on 1x.

If might find a used 2015 Giant Stance in good shape for that budget, it is a decent entry level FS. It is what I have, I am looking and debating on getting something better, but it is a nice enough bike I don’t really need any better. It will handle anything I am capable of.  If not there are plenty of nice HTs available for that price.

At that price you won’t get a huge upgrade from what you ride now. I’ve seen brand new Giant full-sus for $1500 at my LBS. price is dropped to make room for new bikes on the floor.

I suggest either wait and save some more or sell your Hardrock and use money towards new bike

Buy a used bike. You can really get some great deals. look for a Stumpjumper hardtail or full suspension bike. At 800 dollars, you aren’t likely to get something that is really worth owning, unless you buy it used.

Thanks guys! That’s along the lines I was thinking. I’ll put in some overtime and see if I can up the amount. Also, found out there is a big bike swap in April for people selling! I’ll be checking it out. Some LBS bring previous year models looking to move them!

I know the norco charger has 1X but it might be out of your price range..

I vote for the hardtail too. Diamondback and Cannondale both make pretty decent inexpensive hardtails. In fact, REI currently has a couple models of the Diamondback Overdrive on sale. The link goes to the Pro model, but they also have the Comp on sale.
