It sounds like singletracks.com is signing up more new users than ever! That’s great, but where are all these new users on the forums? I’m sure they have something to share.

New users: Sign on and introduce yourselves. Don’t be shy 😃

New users, a lot of lurkers, and I suspect most of them just use the trail search here on Singletracks. Not a bad thing, but yeah, I kinda am missing the opportunities to BS about bikes more. 😕

      :{)

Those lucky skunks! Birthday weekend for me – I’m riding no matter what. I can’t wait any longer!!!

    • #70079

It was my B-Day weekend too (sort of…April 9). I did a 15 mile ride Saturday morning. THe weather was great. II had a cold start (about 37 degrees), but was perfect for riding before the summer heat begins.

Some new posts would be great!

Bomber, when do you get back to town from the desert?

      Greetings to all

I just recently signed onto Singletracks. I think it is an awesome website. This is my third year of riding. I ride a FS Giant AC. I live near Roanoke VA. The recent tragedy at my Alma Mata in Blacksburg has left everyone saddened and in shock 😢 and has put our region in the spotlight for things we would rather not be associated with. In general this area is pretty laid back with some very good mountain bike riding. I split my riding about half on smoother trails (Carvins Cove, Douthat, Mill Mountain) and half in the wilder stuff on the Jefferson and GW National Forest. I am 49 years old and thought I would use a mountain bike just to get in shape by riding Forest Service roads. Then I discovered Singletrack Trails and life hasn’t been the same for me. I just recently rode on Dragons Back for the first time. I thought it was a great ride that is at the upper limits of my riding ability. Just thought it was time for an intro.

    • #70081

Hi CraigCreekRider, good to hear from ya.

We’re down in Durham, NC and we’ve made the trip up to Roanoke a couple times to ride Carvin’s Cove and Explore park. We’re hoping to get up to Douthat on Friday, any idea if the trails will be too wet? I know it’s supposed to rain down here tomorrow and most of the local trails are closed due to recent rains but I’m hoping the Douthat trails drain well…

Jeepmb helped me track down a serious problem on the forums that have kept things a little quiet recently… Apparently most new users who signed up over the last few months weren’t able to post in certain forums due to a glitch in the forum database.

Everything is fixed now but the error affected THOUSANDS of accounts so if you’re one of our new users who tried to post in the past but couldn’t, give it a try now and let us know who you are!

If anyone continues to have problems, please email us and let us know: [email protected]

      Hi Trek7K

With all the wind we had after last weekends deluge of rain it has dried out pretty well. Except for the creek bottoms Douthat drains very well, even after heavy rain. I may be riding over there Saturday or Sunday. I am riding tonight on Mill Mountain and can give you an update on what the conditions are there. The conditions should be similar.

    • #70084

I was just recently (this week) able to use the forums because of that problem. It is great to finally be able to use them now.

    • #70085

Hey Trek7k, what you could do so every one knows that the forums are now fixed, I only found out because I recently tried the forums again, is to announce it on the blog or post it on the home page, or both. I think that would help to increase the amount of new users using the forums.

P.S. thanks for building a great site. 😃

    • #70086

You got it Lancefan – actually an announcement is going out in the weekly email scheduled for Friday. I’ll also post a mention on the blog as well, let’s get people back on the forums!

    • #70087

      Trek7K

So far today no rain in Roanoke, just clouds. Rode last night and local trails were dry. I would imagine Douthat is about the same. Stoney might still be up some. Also, spring gobbler season is open (until noon) in case you wander onto National Forest land.

    • #70088

Hey,biker on your left.hahaha.new user here.juan gear is right, ive been concentrating on staying on the trails all summer.found a riding partner on the web and got freinds that live in fruita colorado.ive had a hard tail for several years, although 2007 is the first real step towards tackling all the trails and buying a full suspension.even got my own bike mechanic to keep my learning curve regularly sharp.which is hard cause i like to ride more than work on my bike.hahaha.well,im a new dude and would like to make freinds here on the singltracks forum.say hey and ill chat.

    • #70089

Welcome Steve323. Its hard to argue with riding more. The forum gives me something to do at work (other than work). Seems there are a lot of you from Colorado on this forum. Must be some good riding out that way. Yea, I’ve been lucky enough to have a riding partner that knows how to work on bikes as well as give advice on riding, part brands, and reducing weight. Ride on…….

    • #70090

      Welcome to Singletracks, Steve-O. 😎
It’s a great thing to know how to wrench on your own rig…. keeps operating expenses low. One of the best resources I found is an old (1982) book called "Bicycle Mechanics"…. It’s a huge volume, covering only road/touring bikes, with just a passing mention to "all-terrain" bikes and BMX’s, but the information it has is easily translatable into today’s context.

    • #70091

Welcome to Singletracks Steve, I`m glad you decided not to be a "lurker". I wish more people would post here, but that`s how it is sometimes. It`s good to have another geezer…oops, I mean seasoned person on the forum (I`m just kidden` you, I`m 43 myself). I see that you bought yourself a Stumpy FSR, great choice (this should really get under Bombardier`s skin 😼 ) I own an 05 Stumpy Expert FSR myself, and I love it! (OK, that d@mned septune rear shock could be a little better) I hope to see more of your postings in the future.

    • #70092

[color=indigo]Well, Im not exactly new but I haven’t been on for a few years. Because of commitments it has been a slow riding season for me in Northeast Ohio! BUT, fall is here and who knows. I hope to be more active on the trails and on this site.

      Rik

    • #70093

wow is it cool to have replies on the forum when a person signs on to singletracks.thanks to craigcreekrider, bombardier, and rikki for posting somthing after a new dude posts.ive been on forums before and let me tell ya all,its a real drag when nothing is there.as long as you guys post ill post.anyway, guess where im going this weekend?i guess ill have to tell ya.moab 😎 not to rub it in,cause i know you guys would go too.hahaha.were gona drive to fruita where our buddy lives and spend the night and head out on saturday morning.hopefully it works out that we get at least one trail in fruita too.havent told the friends yet, although theyll be willin to go too i think.haha.well thanks a million for the worm welcome and the replys and await more forum.

    • #70094

Moab would kick my butt! You would have to send in one of those search teams to find my remains. Sounds like a great time. I would love to have the time but things are nuts right now. I am hoping that after the first of the year things will slow down and I can get back out. I have a nice single track 4 mile loop about 5 miles from home. Enjoy Moab!

    • #70095

moab? LUCKY! you thought of trying the HotTub on your bike? seems like it would be a relatively simple matter. pedal like a madman down one side and pedal like a madman up the other side. of course, it’s probably a bit more involved than that. descending ‘Tater Salad Hill would be interesting on a big hit bike (SC V-10, Specialized Bighit FSRIII, Mongoose EC-D, the like), if not a bit bumpy. can you say foot-and-a-half dropoffs every foot or so? (at least I think that’s how the terrain is on tater salad hill)

    • #70096

      Hi all!

My name is Matt and I’m 44 years old. I recently got into mountain biking at the behest of some co-workers. Now I eat it up, and find time for little else. My ride is a Trek Top Fuel 7 (hence the silly handle) on which I replaced the stem, bar and seat post with carbon fiber. I live near Raleigh, NC, which has abundant trail riding. Also, Pisgah National Forest is about four hours to the west and offers some of the sweetest singletrack in the country…this is the rumor, anyway. I’ve been camping/biking there twice now, but I cannot yet compare it to other reputed rides throughout the country.

I’ll peruse the forums, but I’d like to find advice on the best ways to build strength and endurance on my rides. I know…just keep riding, huh?

    • #70097

Welcome aboard TFS. Funny how riding goes from a casual activity to an obsession, almost overnight. I’ve been riding 3 years and I’m finally starting to get around to the chores I’ve been putting off for the 1st two years. Yea that endurance thing. I have struggled greatly with that myself. Now, I feel I am starting to turn the corner – at least a little. I do think riding more is the best answer. (If we only had more time – and didn’t have to work). Going clipless (if you are not already) has really helped me, especially on uphills and it also forces you to keep peddling. I just switched to them this year and I am still getting used to them (with the occasional panicked fallover).
At least you have some cool riding there in western NC. I’ve heard a lot about Pisgah and also Dupont, but have yet to make the road trip.

    • #70098

hey bombardier,i want to get down to the springs and ride some trails.i was born down there ya know.well ya dont, but ya do now..hahaha.anyway,give me some of yo favorite trails so i can brag bout them when i get back.thanks,i appreciate it.

    • #70099

Sounds like my Summer! Paint the house, build a room, re-plant a large front yard after new sewers installed. Oh yeah! Work (2) jobs and prepare for daughter #3 (due in 5 weeks)!

I think if I can drop weight, get in shape, and be consistant my wife will allow me to upgrade my Fisher! I used to be a casual trail rider! I even patroled for the local parks. [i:3hs6bbv3]Then[/i:3hs6bbv3] I was invided to single track. Now the trails are for the kids and logs are for me!

    • #70100

Rikki- All those chores, 2 jobs, and a new daughter. Heck, I think you are due a new bike. Oh yea, then there’s that money thing. What model Gary Fisher do you ride now? Test rode a new Hi-Fi a couple of months ago. Very sweet and super responsive bike.

    • #70101

I have an Advance. Low end but nice! Here is the story. I decided to buy my wife and daughter a bike and a trailor for the little one. I said lets go to Eddy’s in Stow Ohio! She said Toys-R-Us. Well if the momma is happy everone is happy. So I got the girls each a bike and my wife said which one do you wnat 😢 I told her that I would try my luck in the garbarge of a yard sale 😏 She knew that I wanted a Fisher. So she went on fathers day and asked the clerk for a Harry London bike 😮 Harry London is a local chocolate company. The salesman didn’t flinch. Showed her some Sugar and she almost fainted. So I got a year old model at a better price with the promise of upgrading if certain conditions were met! So by next summer my hope is an upgrade!

    • #70102

The Sugar is a nice bike…. But I wholeheartedly suggest saving up for a Hi-Fi ( or completing all your tasks on the honey-do list!). My wife has one, and it’s definitely made her a better rider, plus she loves it a lot. I like them a lot too, very light, very well put together. If I had the cash for a dedicated cross-county bike, that’s what I’d get.

New User here, this is my first time posting. Say just saying hello and introducing myself. I’m 23 from Baltimore, MD and just starting to get into MTB, mostly trail riding at the local parks ect. I have a newbie bike but I plan to upgrade in the spring before the weather turns nice again. Anyway, if any local riders want to hit the trails on the weekends let me know.

    • #70104

hey kb biker,im pretty new too.welcom and just wanted to say there are a few enthusiastic members on here that always have good things to say like bombardier,slypdog,craigcreekrider,trek7 and so on.i just took the leap of faith into a brand new full suspension this summer.working my way through the warrenty period.had it about three months now and got to tell ya,theres alot more adjustments than on my old hardtail.hahaha.itll be the bomb when i get to know it.i have a stumpjumper elite 07 with the 08 talas rlc fork.i really like the talas(travel adjustment)i can set it at 100 mm and climb or set it at 140 mm and go down hill or i can set it at 120 and hit the trails.i chose this bike more for the reason that it has this feature and of course that it is an all around bike.ive had my hard tail for several years now although this summer is the first ive really tackled singletrack.i looked at yeti asx,575, and iron horse, rocky mountain slayer, and so.even looked at dirt jumpers and urban assault bikes.i didnt want to do just tricks and jumps though,i wanted to pedal.i did bmx as a kid and really want to do singletrack.so if i get around to dirt jumping and tricks, more power to me.back to my point now though,i bought the stumpy as an entry bike into singetrack and full suspension although my budget was seriously $2000.the sj elite had really nice components and the talas fork and the yetis and others were a little more so i figured the stumpy was a pretty decent place to start.i ended up right at $2500 flat.i like the look of the 08 stumpy frames although they do not come with the talas fork anymore.well im sure you got alot of bikes to think about before you upgrade, just thought i would let ya know what direction another new rider is heading in.again, welcome and ride free.

Welcome to Singletracks! Don’t sweat the newbie bike, we all start somewhere. But when you upgrade to a [i:3kwqvmqz]real[/i:3kwqvmqz] MTB, you’ll be able to tell the difference easier! What kind of bike are you starting with?

Thanks! Right now I have a Mongoose Maneuver, it’s dual suspension, a cheapo MTB from from DICK’s. So far it rides alright though, no real complaints. Sometimes the gears are funny, like it won’t always want to go into the lowest gear, or sometimes I have to jump 2 gears to get it to switch. I think the cables still have a little stretching to get broken in. I have the 2 year warranty so I figure I can beat it up all winter and get the free repairs, then upgrade once I have more time/money to ride.

    • #70107

I doubt it’s the cables. I’ve seen bikes like yours with derailleurs that have tensioner springs so weak & adjuster barrels so loose it would be impossible to adjust. Not only that, but they’re put together by stock-boy/girl monkeys, not experienced wrenches.
I’d take your bike to an LBS for a good tune-up.

Thanks for the info. I am sure it’s cause its a cheapo bike, but its just a beginner, all in due time. I may have Dick’s look it over since it’s free, and if they can’t do anything about it there’s a good LBS around my way that could.

It’s been raining for 3 days straight and its finally supposed to clear up on Saturday, so I can’t wait to get out riding on Sunday, try and let the trails dry at least a little.

Welcome to ST! I’ll look for you out at Blankets…I’m there about 3-4 days a week on an orange Heckler with blue King and Hope crap on it.

Nice Trek. I love the redesign and been wanting to demo the new suspension. Very cool.

    • #70111

sounds good. i’ll be back out there as soon as it dries out. maybe tomorrow? i’d be happy to let you take my fuel around the loop. it’s a 19.5.

Aw, I really shouldn’t.. I wreck a lot and probably exceed the weight limits on that baby. ;)

Welcome to Single Tracks huttobk. Hey Rebus.

I was visiting our distributor for window film in Holly Springs and stayed in Woodstock. Any time I travel by automobile I look to see if there are trails near by and I take my bike if I can. I brought my bike down and rode Blankets Creek. Its definately a fun trail and everyone was supper nice. I rode on Monday and Tuesday evening so I got to ride the Dwelling and the South Loop in both directions. I like the Teusday ride on the dwelling because of the big jump about half way though the trail. You can get some pretty good air off that one. I did notice some trail work going on off Mosquito Flats and tried to ride some of that but its really soft right now. I hope to get back down by spring and will definately be bringing my bike. Let me know when the trail work is completed maybe I can find a reason to get back down there on business.

Oh yeah! That’s the new section code-named Area 51 or the North Loop depending on who you talk to. It’s going to add a bunch of miles along with some nice technical stuff.

I like the Tuesday direction also, on the South Loop too. It’s a bit faster than the Monday direction, or so it seems.

Next time you’re here, drop me an email.

I’ve been Mountain biking now for about a month in Southe East Tennessee. I’m hooked. I have been road biking in the mountains since july 4th and between the two i’ve lost 45 LBS. Lost 5 just clinbing Clemmer trail in Chilhowee last week. Thought i was gonna die but i made it.
So far my favorite trail is Brush creek. I bought an entry level hard tail but so far it has been a great bike. Jamis XC 2.0 Hopefully it won’t be long and i will be moving up to a full suspension bike. if i an ever afford it.
I would like to meet some people to go riding with. [email protected]

    • #70116

Congrats on the weight loss Rockinr. I got into mountain biking for the very same reason. I lost 40 pounds in about 4 months and have kept it off for more than a year now. With the older bikers that I meet on trails and bike with it definately inspires me by letting me realize that I have many years to ride and a few more bikes to buy. If you are like me you will be purchasing a new bike before your year aniversary. Good luck and keep those cranks turning.

    • #70117

I started MTBing for the same reason. Jogging started to hurt, and I just got fat. Got a FS bike and thought I would just ride fire roads, but after a few singletrack rides I was hooked. Lost 30 lbs in 3-4 months. 10 have mysteriously reattached to me (12 oz at a time most likely). I actually lost too much a first – sister said I had that concentration camp look. Now I stay around 175-180 which works for me. Cool trails in SE Ten.? Are your trails on Forest Service land or other?

    • #70118

The forums on Singletracks started off rather slow, despite the automated notice of it’s existance which was sent to all registered users.
But I rather prefer a small group of active posters, as compared to the masses over at Pinkbike & MTBR. It cuts down a lot on the useless 2-cents & flaming, plus there’s a lot better chance of honest questions receiving honest answers.
So to the new users that I haven’t officially welcomed yet….. Prost! 😃

I ride mostly down at Ocoee, Chilhowee, tanasi, and brush creek.
Just went out for my first night ride a chilhowee tonight with the folks fron Scotts bike shop in cleveland. It was a blast. Thanks to dave and doug for the fun night ride. I’ll be there again.

woo hoo,i made it to bunny hop status.hahaha.im at a disadvantage in the user points system cause the big points are in gps.if i ride with somone who has a gps,can i get the data on here to my profile without having to bring his gps over to my computer?does anyone have a problem with me using somone elses gps to score points for myself as long as i ride the trails.i just cant afford one right now.

    • #70121

I don’t have a problem with it. You can find videos of trails on youtube and post the links also. Pictures of the trails can really add up also. I just always seam to get into riding to much to think of stopping and getting out the camera.

Man, I envy you guys out in CO. with all your trails. If I had that many places to ride close by I probably would not have a job.

    • #70122

I’ll give the official line on copyright, there have been some incidents recently so I’m really glad you brought up the question.

Photos: only post photos you have taken or have permission to post (ie. your friend’s photo). DO NOT copy photos from other websites, this is infringement.

Videos: ok to post links to any YouTube video you find since the original video is still linked and the author is credited on YouTube.com.

GPS data: same as photos; if your friend sends you his GPS data and says it’s ok to post, then you’re fine. Just don’t steal GPS data from other websites.

Directions, descriptions, reviews, etc.: Do not plagiarize from any source. This means you shouldn’t copy trail info from other mountain bike or state park websites. Write everything in your own words.

That should cover the major stuff, feel free to ask if you’re unsure. More info can be found on our terms and conditions page.

thanks trek7,i now have a clear path to move on with my singletracks profile.and yes aabiking,it is really cool to have all these trails out here to ride.i really just started to hit the trails this summer and i wonder how long it will take me to ride all the stuff that is within a weekends reach of riding before i get to the point of taking a day or two off from work to go somwhere new and different.there was a little bit of a let down this week though,i was all set up to leave friday after work and drive up to my buddies house in fruita to spend the night and then we leave saturday morning to head over to moab. i was informed thursday that we are overtime starting yesterday and have to work saturday, and my buddie was so pumped that i was heading up to ride with him that he didnt even listen to my voice mail telling him that i coudnt make it.it was hard to tell him that i couldnt make it this weekend.so i guess not all is perfect in paradise.thanks for posting and remember that keeping those pedals going around is the most importent. 😉

    • #70124

Hey Steve. What happens when hunting season is in full swing in your area? Does it hamper the biking or do you guys work together well? I have been hunting since I was a kid and still love to. I will be heading out tomorrow morning with my son for opening day of muzzle loading season for whitetail deer. I will not be riding very much until around Christmas time now. But as for the mixing of the to sports when hunting season starts in our area the bikers, including me, pretty much stay off the trails that are in huntable areas. We do have trails that are in areas that cannot be hunted. Do you have the same or is it ride at your on risk?

I need to plan a business trip to Colorado late next spring and plan a couple extra days for riding. It’s killing me reading about all the trails.

    • #70125

I would deffinatly pick the trail you want and check it out.I do not hunt so im not the one to tell you when and where to ride under those circumstances.I do know that there is shooting ranges around the trails we ride right in the foothills cause i see the warning signs along the trail(s).here are some sites to check out:Jefferson County,co http://jeffco.us 303-279-6511,,,,http://www.wilderness.org/index.cfm,,,,and colorado.com.I hope this helps.

    • #70126

Thanks Steve, I’ll check it out.

    • #70127

first post but have been adding to the site when I can. I really dig singletracks and think it is growing in all the right ways. I am moving down to Western Tennessee for a job at UT Martin and would love the beta on any good trails within a couple hours of there. Seems thin compared to eastern TN, but maybe there is something to offer. I am afraid of having to become a roadie!

    • #70128

      Welcome to Singletracks, Tumbleweed!

And lest you become a victim of the ban-hammer, do not mention the possibility of becoming a roadie again! 😉 😃

It’s bad enough we’ve got enough members who’ve gone to the Dark Side and become disciples of the SingleSpeed…. But hey, if you’ve got a masochistic streak, by all means. 😼

Welcome to the forum. Good luck with finding trails – got to have em. I see from your profile you have ridden quite a bit around Oakridge, Oregon. Sweet. Hope I can get out there sometime. Worked on a fire crew for 2 seasons there in my pre-MTB life. Passed through there a couple of years ago and got in a quick ride up Salmon Creek. I want to ride more in that area.

Well, hopefully you can dig up something to ride on in the part of Tennessee you’re are moving to. I hear there’s a lot of cool stuff in East Tennessee. Also, the Land between the Lakes area in Kentucky was highly recommended by Sweetlife. Don’t know how close that would be. Hopefully, a local can hook you up with good riding somewhere close to home and keep you off of the street.

Land Between the Lakes is a bit more than an hour away from UTM, just far enough to make it a pain to get to. But I will trek when I must to get to decent riding. I am hoping there is some sort of community down there to get involved in.

Oakridge is by far one of my favorite places to ride. So many great trails to do there. Like you, I worked in McKenzie river fire district for a summer, just north of Oakridge district. Some of the best times in my life. Even got to ride the epic McKenzie river trail a few times!

Thanks for the welcome CraigCreek and Bombardier!

Joined today. I’m from Folsom Ca and I ride an older GT I-Drive. I’ve been riding for many years. Then had two children and stopped riding for about 3 years. I started riding again and found my love of riding again. I love my GT even though its outdated and love to ride singletrack.

    • #70132

welcome motogt, good to know that you can enjoy riding just for the sake of riding even if you have an older bike.i rode my old hard tail for several years before i bought a new full suspension this summer.keep posting, more the merrier.

Welcome from the East Coast. Nice to see Singletracks Forum is well represented from Coast to Coast and beyond. 😆 New bike fever coming your way? Old bike or new its still a blast. Glad you’re back on 2 wheels. Enjoy!

      Hello everyone,

I am new to the site and just started riding a few months ago. This website is pretty cool. I bought this old Gary Fisher Marlin that seems to work good. Athough I don’t know much about bikes. Is there a way to find out more about it? Like what year it was made? Thanks for any information you have.

    • #70135

Welcome to SingleTracksks Flip. Glad to see another bike addiction starting. I have only been mountain biking for a little over a year and a half now and I can’t get enough of it. Just getting into night riding and it really puts a new outlook on old trails. Something you will find out as time goes by. Keep the cranks turning and try to stay in the budget. Thats whats so hard for me.

Your bike frame should have a serial number on it somewhere. Find it and e-mail Gary Fisher and they should be able to give you the year of the frame. The components could have been upgraded so the year of those parts will be hard to track.

    • #70136

Thanks aabiking. I never thought about night riding. What kind of lights do you need to ride at night? Is there a special kind you would need. It seems to get pretty dark in the forest areas where I live.

I will email the serial number to them and see what they say. It is a pretty old bike so it will be interesting to see how old it actually is lol.

Welcome to the forum from another VA rider. One of these days AA and I are going to hook up for a ride. Like AA, I also ride a lot at night. Not really all that crazy about it, but getting off of work at 5 you have no choice if you are going to ride at all. I use an HID light on my helmet (Night Rider Storm) and lower powered light (Night Rider Rat) on my handle bars. I have no real complaints about Night Riders except that the cable connections don’t "click in" and they occasionaly work loose. I hear a lot of good things about Lite and Motion lights too. I think there are plenty of good lights out there, but prepare to be price shocked. Low end is around $100 and HID lights start at $300 or so. Expensive, but better than running into a tree or rock using crappy lights.

    • #70138

Thanks Craigcreekrider. Mountain biking is an expensive hobby. I take it duct taping a mag lite to my bike helmet is not an efficient means of lighting lol.

Hello everyone. Just started riding down here in Florida. New purchase was a 2007 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Elite. So far great bike, getting used to the full suspension.

    • #70140

Welcome mros895656. Hope you enjoy this site. I’m new to riding and have learned a lot here.

    • #70141

😮 OOPS, I’d actually register back in June and haven’t really been on the forum or anywhere on ST but the training log, I’ve always rode a bike with multi-year interruptions. I’m 48 started riding again in May. I started riding my road bike (trek1500) and when fall temps started showing up, I migrated to the mountain bike, It’s an older mongoose (pre Brunswick) I added a Dart1 this July. When I can justify it I’ll be looking for a full suspension. But as long as you’re having fun with it.

Welcome to the Forums, Vic & Mros.

Mros- Before I joined the Army, I lived in Tampa. My wife is from Florida too. I never rode there, but there’s a park between Valrico & Plant City that I think would be a blast to try out. It’s called Medard Park, just off of 60 & Turkey Creek Rd.
There’s a section of the park that’s got all these massive sand & limestone formation/hills. They’ve got live-oaks growing on them, and through erosion it’s riddled the hills with chutes, cliffs, paths, & washes. I remember seeing some kids on BMX’s riding there. The rest of the park has the big lake & swamp, and IIRC there’s trails running around them as well.

Vic- How do you justify getting a full-suspension bike? 😉

    • #70143

hey mros895656,i bought the 2007 stumpjumper elite also.i am really curious to know how the talas feature on the fox fork is working for you.oh and welcom to single tracks, more the merrier.

    • #70144

Welcome MROS and Vic. Vic, I also had to go the FS route. I like that plush ride, but probably do lose some responsiveness. Like you stated, as long as you’re riding. 😆 I think it’s mostly a matter of personal preference for FS versus hardtail. Either way, you’re rolling two wheels in the dirt. Where is Linden?

Greetings from Michigan everyone! I just found this site and thought I would introduce myself. I’m a long time rider (1985 Bianchi Grizzly) and just wrapped up my 4th season of XC racing. Having previously lived in several Western states I am still amazed at the wealth of sweet singletrack trails Michigan offers. Add to that the Upper Peninsula and it just gets better. The race scene here is very active and features USAC, Endurance and Point Series events. We just finished up with the Iceman Cometh Challenge Nov. 10 in Traverse City. http://www.iceman.com/
Our central body for trail advocacy is the Michigan Mountain Bike Association. http://www.mmba.org/ What a great group of people! This site has some nice features. Check out the Trail Guide tab. Anyhoooo, it’s nice to meet y’all.

      Steve,
Yes, there are a couple of great places to ride near Kazoo. Ft. Custer State Park has 20 miles of trails from beginner to advanced.
      http://www.mmba.org/trails.php?trail=10
Yankee Springs State Park North of Kazoo has a 12 mile advanced loop that will put a smile on your face. Both parks are open year round.
      http://www.mmba.org/trails.php?trail=4
Steve, if you ever get a chance to race I would highly recommend it. Nothing will improve your skill level faster than competing. A Time Trial is a great place to start. If you find yourself visiting Michigan next year you may want to give it a whirl.
      Craig

Welcome C More Air. Did not know Michigan was such a hot spot for mountain biking. Heck, why not though. If I recall, lots of rocks and woods up that way and some pretty hilly stuff up in the UP.

Race bug hasn’t hit me yet, but may try one next year just to see if I can finish. Riding buddy of mine puts on a couple here in VA. The courses are intense and I think if I just finished I would be happy.

    • #70149

Hey, good to see someone from MMBA made it over here!

If we end up heading back to Michigan, I’ll definitely be hitting the Iceman. You won’t be able to miss me, I’ll be on my klunker! 😼

Michigan has some very nice trails, IIRC. The lower part of the State is pretty flat, but good singletrack still. Up north to Cadillac/Traverse City/Kalkaska it’s a lot more hilly, and the UP has a great variety of trails; including one that runs the whole length of the Superior shoreline. I’d love to make it up to Marquette for a ride.

    • #70150

      Bombardier,
Back at ya man. Saw you on the MMBA board. Welcome. Hey, if you can even get into Iceman next year with the new lottery I am sure you would have a great ride on that cruiser of yours. If you’re considering it registration opens Dec. 1. You’re right about the U.P. and some of the great riding up North. Hancock hosts the Chain Drive Festival in June.
      http://www.chaindrive.org/2007/events.htm

Marquette hosts a popular point to point race called the Ore to Shore in August. http://www.oretoshore.com/. This race continues to grow and it never gets old. Marquette in August is perfect.
Copper Harbor is touted as having some of the most technical trails around and are often compared to trails out West. If it weren’t so far I would be there tomorrow…

Bombardier, How’s;"It followed me home can I keep it??" 😉

i may as well use this area to introduce myself. i’m 35 and i’m from bluefield in southwest Virginia, about an hour and a half southwest of Roanoke and an hour west of Virginia Tech (Go Hokies). i’ve been mt. biking since 1998 i took about 3 years off due to not having anyone to ride with and just started again this past February. I am the proud owner of a 1999 Iron Horse 8.0, which was a great bike back in 1999, about to upgrade to a GF Hi-Fi Deluxe which will be my first full susser. my back has been asking for one for about the last 3 months and thats my b-day present to myself this January. good to meet everyone.

    • #70153

Welcome, LaLD! Good choice with the Hi-Fi Deluxe, you’ll not be disappointed.
Oh yeah, not having anyone to ride with is no excuse…. just get out and ride! 😃

    • #70154

i do now, i’m even night riding alone. something i actually like about the quiet when its just you and the woods.

    • #70155

Happy birthday to yourself. Glad you got back into riding, even if it solo. Usually is for me too. I test rode a GF Hi-Fi, but don’t remember which model is was. It was sweet. Great handling bike. I ended up with a SC Blur LT, but I was used to a long travel full suspension bike (Giant AC). I just felt more comfortable on the Blur, but would easily go the Hi-Fi route. I suspect your area is like mine, lots of National Forest that nobody rides on. Gets lonely out there, especially at night.

    • #70156

This year i’ve been riding mostly with my brother in law and my son. actually we’ve just been trying to keep up with my son. i’m getting the GF for my B’day and he’s getting a C’dale Prophet (its last years model but he loves the lefty). i’m lucky right now, my wife is going to college but until she graduates shes working at the local bike shop. but i have been doing alot more lone riding than before.
