Just a quick toss up of which month best suits your MTB needs.

For the most part I like October cause of it’s nice cool weather. It’s about 50 degrees Fahrenheit here so that’s perfect for me. Once I get going I’m not too cold and I’m also not dying of a heat stroke. Of course we tend to lack some sun, so that’s a downfall.

All of them!!! I love riding my bikes no matter what time of year it is.

Winter, winter, winter, winter, and winter again!!! 😃 😃 😃

The dog days of summer here are just too damn hot and muggy.

i so agree with that. winter is the best time to ride so long as its not wet. but i really really like riding at the end of Feburary and beginning of March.

I’m envious of everybody who can ride "normally" in winter. This is making me want to move. If I had a secured job elsewhere, I’d definitely move for the sake of MTB.

Take your mt bike to a snowmobile trail and ride it. Lots of fun. run low psi (15-20 psi I used to ride) I know you have plenty of those in VT. Also I believe some of the mountains have mt bike soloms down the slopes. Mount Snow comes to mind on that.

All months are great for riding, if I head to pick one though it would be….October.

    • #84101

I’d have to go with the cooler months september, october. although we did have a cool rainy summer this year in massachusetts.

    • #84102

Gotta go with October or November… the only catch to these months is the trails are covered with leaves. I’ve kissed a tree or two.

    • #84103

I am with CP. I love the florida winters for out door activities. Summers are brutal here. I need to buy another superjet for summer riding. The cool thing for you northern guys is that you can snowboard in the winter 😃

    • #84104

All year. I’ll ride anytime all year (except when it’s wet). Finding ridable areas in the snow can be tricky, but I’ll do paved rides if I have to.

    • #84105

      Winter, 😆

    • #84106

Not much of a winter here, but it is awesome to head out on a cloudy day with the temps at 40 to 50 degrees….

Of course, riding anytime is great!

    • #84107

I am going to miss summer. Riding with my shirt off, getting covered in mud and sweat, breathing humid air, listening to birds, looking for cool plants, etc. My friends think I’m a freak but I’m being serious. No worries about bugs, just outrun them. Oh well, fall and winter riding is fun too, just not the same.

    • #84108

…and being able to ride until late and still being able to see. Guess I’ll have to spring for a set of lights.

    • #84109

We are having PERFECT weather here in georgia right now!! I’m going to try to get out on the bike as much as possible…

      today was awesome!

    • #84110

yeah same here in south alabam. goin ridin as soon as i get off of work, and im gettin off early 😛 😛 😮 whoo-hoo with a rebel yell. we’ve been havin so much rain here the last week and a half, i know about that Goo. did you get flooded out any?

    • #84111

um… bout 2 weeks ago now we were getting rain like crazy… didn’t ride singletrack for about 2 weeks, some of the trails got flooded… tuesday night we were out putting in a reroute around a flooded section so next time we get rain like that we’ll be safer. that trail, though, is still thick with mud in spots from those storms.

but it’s looking up now!! just rode between classes this morning… it was AWESOME! studying is over rated.

It’s 71 degrees with sunny blue skies in Richmond right now. I’ll be hitting the James River trails after work today. Can’t wait. Too bad it is dark by 7PM lately. I need to get some lights!

Prime time ridin season right now here in Colorado, although it has rained and now it snowed today.I’m gonna check on the weather in Moab and Fruita and if it’s a go,gonna head up to the western slope this weekend, havent been to Moab in awhile.
As far as favorite time to ride,as long as there’s no snow and the ground is ridable, that’s about all I look forward to with the exception of summer being the best for obvious reason’s.If it’s really hot in the summer here in Colorado,I’ll usually head to the mountain’s where there’s a heck of alot of trees that make for perfect shade and cool air in the summer’s.

I’ve only been mountain biking about 5 months or so. But i will have to say that it has not been so easy in this heat. So i cant wait till winter time. In the past 5 months i have hung in there with some friends of mine that are bad asses & i have to say i have become a bad ass myself in that short time frame. And that being said i cant wait to see what i can do in the winter weather.

aww man i wasen’t saying that you dont care about your education and all, just by the fact that you are in college (right???) that you do care and you also care bout having fun to while in college(i.e riding your bike in between classes). Just rub it in a little bit more don’t you!! Its been in the mid hot and steamy 90’s here in FL for over a week now, and I am hating it. It feels like riding in a steam pressure cooker! 😮 😮 Its just too damn hot in the FL jungles. God would love to have some 70’s here. Hopefully in a month or two.[/quote:x9z82zr4] A week or 2 ago they teased us with some BS front that was suppose to pass by here & i believe the temps went down to about 88. lol WTF was that? Fall, for sure! Can’t beat riding through blazing aspens in cool weather. Ride on!

    • #84124

In my neck of the woods, September is the best month, good temp, trails are super tackey and not so many people on the trails.

Agreed. I see why a lot of old people tend to flock there in the winter. It actually has quite reasonable living conditions. 😆

    • #84126

i could go for a vermont winter right now. i miss the cold.

    • #84127

Right on Goo. I went down to UGA for grad school and I couldn’t stand the lack of winter and snow. Had to come back north after that, missed snowboarding.

The foliage would be the big draw this time of year. Really miss New England this time of year.

      Reasonable living conditions????????????

The cost of living here in FL is definitely far from being reasonable. It may be nice for the snowbirds because they are gone during the worst of FL conditions and soooo many of them don’t even pay taxes. With the hurricanes, twisters, very high humidity, searing heat, and extremely mild winters (warm winters would be better), the high cost of living and owning anything down here, the sky high insurance rates, schools getting much worse, the taxes spiraling way out of control, and a lot of our MTB trails closing……etc. etc.

I definitely do not call it "reasonable living conditions". Once my folks have moved on, I am sooooo going to sell off the family property and get out of this high priced state.

I know you guys have some brutal winters up that way, but it may seem really reasonable to live here in FL to you guys sooo far up north, but we have to live our conditions year round, pay taxes, and the high price of living here..[/quote:2bbtzyie]

Fair enough, I was really aiming more towards just the weather, but I’m sure taxes are another things altogether I won’t doubt that. Vermont isn’t the cheapest place to live either though. But putting that aside, I’d easily take a bike-able winter, doesn’t matter which state it is!

As for the foliage, yeah it definitely draws it’s share of people around.

I think October is hard to beat. Favorite month seems to depend on where you live. Leaf color and nice weather make this a good time of year for riding here in VA.

Course I like summer when it ain’t too hot, spring when it ain’t too wet, and winter when it ain’t too cold. 😆 November is my least favorite month cause of the massive leaf blanket. Like riding on a piece of carpet pulled over a bunch of softballs. You never know when your front wheel is going to kick out from under you 😮 or which way its going to go.

    • #84131

October has got to be my favorite month here in VA with April coming in a close second. One thing to say about VA and the Mid Atlantic state is that we can pretty much ride year round with just a few miserable days thrown in throughout the year. All different types of riding in a fairly close area also.

    • #84132

I like Sept/Oct the best. This September was great, clear, cool, and dry. So far October has been a wash. Trails are just too wet and are taking a beating.

April/May tends to be muddy and buggy. June and July can be decent, August is hit or miss. By November I’m ready to snowboard.

When I lived in the Mid-Atlantic, I rode pretty much year round. Same on Long Island. But, the snowboarding sucked there. 😀

Nice to meet you Sunday AABiking. Talk about optimum riding conditions. 70’s, no humidity, good leaf color & trails in perfect shape. I did the post race sweep at Douthat and my leg muscles are still sore. That was a hard 22 miles, but I enjoyed every bit of it (except the climb to Mountain Top). Brushy Hollow was screaming fast. So fast I came close to an off the trail ride experience (use your brakes DumbA– 😆 ). I hope your race went well. Too bad more folks didn’t come out for such a nice day in the woods.
