From what I understand Subaru no longer offers the VIP discount for IMBA members. Anyone know why? Does it have anything to do with the wilderness controversy? I’ve read a bunch of reasons why it ended but was not sure what actually happened. It’s really a shame considering Subaru is popular amongst mountain bikers. Hopefully they can bring it back someday.

In a survey a couple years ago we found mountain bikers are 3 times as likely to own a Subaru as the average American.
I suspect Subaru’s decision was more business-related and strategic than taking issue with anything IMBA did. Even Chik-Fil-A seems to (finally) be moving away from the Eat Mor Chicken cows. 🙂
Now: which car company would you like to see take up the mantle? Seems like Mercedes Benz and Audi are both stepping up their game. Benz sponsors Fabio Wibmer, and Audi took over the title sponsorship of the Nine Nights freeride competition (formerly sponsored by Suzuki). Plus, every car and truck company seems to use stock MTB footage in their commercials already. Ha!

The discount was probably based on Subaru’s partnership with IMBA which has ended.
Jeff, I would bet that Tacomas are a pretty close match for mtn bikers behind Subarus. Audis and Benz’s seem, uhhh, a little more “golfy” than most mtn bikers would like. It is interesting to see their sponsorship at events.

Dang, I didn’t know they weren’t doing that anymore. My wife and I have been in the market for a Subaru and this was one of the selling points for me.
