We all gather on this site because of our passion for mountain biking. This is a great place to talk to one another about great trails, crashes, bikes, and what “goo” tastes best while on the trail before you “bonk”…

What other hobbies or passions do you guys have when you’re not obscessing over riding your bike? Might be a great way of getting to know some of your fellow “singletrack.com” friends a bit more…

      I’ll go first…
Family…goes without saying, great wife, great kids…even have great in-laws…now onto hobbies…
      ImageImageImage
RVing (my wife calls this camping). My wife and I have a 32 ft. travel trailer, we like taking it on the road and finding new places to live for a weekend or a week…Then return home. “Camping” often turns into a good bicycle or motorcycle ride.
      Image
Woodworking is relaxing to me. I have a small shop in my garage and enjoy making various things. Some furniture and some carving.
      ImageImage
Desert offroad racing (motocross) is probably one of my biggest passions. I don’t race like I used to. Not becasue of getting older and slower, but becasue I’ve been enjoying a nice long “slower paced” ride. I’ve been able to take in more of the scenery this way. I plan on racing one more time before I move to South Carolina. Although I look forward to some different riding in the South, I know there is nothing like riding in the deserts of Southern California. One would have to experience it to know what I’m talking about…

      Anyway…That’s me in a nut-shell…

As far as family goes, it’s just me, my wife, Lindsey.

      Kids?

      Ain’t got ’em don’t want ’em. 😼

Our “other” shared hobby is a love of 4×4’s… Mainly monstrous gas-guzzling full-size Jeeps…. I thought bikes would be cheaper than ‘froadin’, but holy hell, I coulda bought 4 FSJs for the price of our two newest bikes.

Other than that, I cook, she sews. I cook a mean ginger chili chicken, lemme tell ya.

The Army pretty much dictates everything else in our lives…..

      yup….

      😕

Wife, Grandbaby’s come first been working on redoing our 4 wheel drive 62 Willy’s wagon that I’v had 20 or 30 years kinda lost track.

Now if I could just get the wife to call FOOSE and overhaul it

Rock climbing at the gym when I can get someone to go. Raced motorcycles and offoad buggies back in the day. Built factory race pipes for Husky and race buggie frames for a while.

Done with XC racing for now, try to hit one downhill race per year, mainly I’m the old fart that passed ya on the trail 😏

Went back to school, 3/4 load and a Biz to run takes most of the week. Oh yeah been tormenting a guitar for about a year, wouldn’t call it playing 😉 yet

Nice! I got a ’61 Willys Wagon. All original. Used to run great. Was my daily driver for many years. Fixed it up and drove it halfway cross the country twice.
It now needs more attention before it rots into the driveway!

Keb Mo, Buddy, and BB have been huge influences on Pop’s style.

Check out his ’50s vintage Dobro! 😎

Here’s our ’81 Cherokee… In the background is one of the Jagerturms that dot the German countryside. We were ‘wheeling on some logging roads and found this photo-op.

And this is the newest addition to our OPEC-supporting family…. A ’55 Buick Special…. And it’s oh so clean….

Before moving to Reno a little over 3 years ago I spent the majority of my life in Alaska, the last dozen years in rural AK working mainly in the commercial fishing industry – all that crazy crap you see on the Discovery Channel? Been there, done that, will probably do some of it again someday. I work construction down here which is can be pretty demanding especially on the amount of free time I get.
There are several things I choose to do with that free time though, I am an avid hiker/backpacker and really enjoy being this close to the Sierra, a regular get-away weekend for me is to take all the gear, drive into the mountains, hike one day, camp and then bike the next day, or visa-versa. Even after all the time spent in AK surrounded by all that nature you will still find me standing, stareing in complete awe at something in Yosemite, I love the place and try to make it there several times a year. I am very much into exploration and just about any outdoor adventure, now I am just tryin to find a balance between the work / play thing ya know.
At home, no kids, no wife, no girlfriend, maybe that will change someday but Im not really holding my breath for it. While in town you will find me on the bike trail, oogling over some new piece of equipment in REI or in a coffee shop maybe.
I am a practicing photographer and am working on setting up a web page or at least an online collection soon, Ill have a link to it on my profile when its ready. While on online I spend some time at the forums on Tribe.net, mostly the outdoor groups if anyone is interested.

Nothing wrong with a little blues! Nice thread, too…

Me? I’ve been drumming for about ten years… I play in a rock band called Griffon from Framingham, MA – http://www.myspace.com/griffonband

I’ve been playing guitar for about five years as well, mostly with my recording project, Fourth Year — http://www.myspace.com/fourthyear

Between music, my bike, the gym, and my girlfriend… I get to work and sleep. 😆 I may have to give up the latter soon!

Despite the fact that I love to spend time outdoors mountain biking, hiking, camping, running, road cycling, backpacking, etc. I’m really just an Internet geek inside (as you might have guessed). I’m not sure if my interest in building websites drives my desire to go outside and get new content or if my desire to be outside drives my interest in spreading information through the web? Probably a little of both…

I’ll be graduating with my MBA in a few weeks and I plan on starting an apparel company with a friend over the summer. We have the business plan done and we’re currently in fund raising mode, stay tuned for shameless plugs once we get up and running…

I’m also a big home improvement guy and fortunately we have the perfect 1940s home with tons of projects that need to be done. We also have a dog that is terrible at mountain biking but a pretty good runner.

Family comes first, two sons and Lucila my wife. My 8 year is just starting to get on the trails. The one year old is still holding out. Anyone have any suggestions for a good mtn bike for an 8 year old?

Hobbies: Photography, hiking, backpacking, canyoneering, archaeology, ancient architechture(ruins), snowboarding, snowshoeing, basketball and traveling.

Check out my canyoneering photos here: [url:2dr7kzh8]http://www.canyoneering.info/[/url:2dr7kzh8]

Wait, there’s somehting other than mountain biking and talking about mountain bikes?? LOL!!! I would have to agree with most responses on here about family being first and then hobbies coming in second. I really enjoy hanging with the wife and my two precious angels…Sydney is 3 years and Avery is 6 months (we’ll see how long they are actually angels). Kids are so darned fun and say the funniest things! Just yesterday she asked my mother-in-law, “Mimi, do you have a giny too?” Oh it was so funny how she said it and I think the ol’ mom-in-law was a bit surprised!!

I am also into a lot of sports including golf, tennis, racquetball, and volleyball. I have played all at a competetive level (except for golf) and enjoy just being active and playing. On the slower side of things, I have taken up digital photography this year and love to snap photos of everything. I will soon find my focus (no pun intended) and figure out what type of photography I will stick with. I am also BIG into cooking and know in my heart that I can truly be the next food nedtwork food star!! LOL!!!!! In all seriousness, I do love to cook. This was a great topic Ken!!

Isn’t it nice to have a forum that is’nt about a few people with inside jokes who burn anyone new. This has stayed about riders and riding not a who’s who of people who don’t have a life.

Well, thankf for participating in this thread…

I enjoy meeting new people from around the country…world for that matter.

Most of my freinds are “motocross guys” and/or “pre-runner pu****s” running around our local deserts in their “$50K-$100K trucks” or on their new YZ450F or CFR450 (I love those trucks…I just can’t afford to buy, build or fix one when…not if…they break 😢) …So they are not real interested in “bicycles”. Most looked at me like I was crazy when I told them I was riding a “pedal powered” bike!!!

So, when I feel the need to talk to people with similar interests…like others…I turned to the internet. This has been one of the best forums out there…Don’t run into the idiots with the egos or to many of the 15 year old wise a**’s that tell you your bike sucks…you suck…your sticker on your helmet sucks…etc… 😠

As for my friends…the last ride I went on was a particularly gruelling 85 miler…crazy terrain…whooped out sections that would go on for miles 😕 , crazy drops 😮 , “fast virgin washes” (…what did he mean by, “fast virgin washes…? 😮 ), rock gardens that go on for days 😼…My favorite place to ride (Red Mountain near Charlies Place)!!! I’ve always been a “middle of the pack” or a “back of the pack” rider. Not because my skills suck…I’d simply run out of steam after the first 15 miles…Last two rides, I’m in front and waiting on almost everyone!!! Now my longtime riding buddy is asking me about different mountain bike choices… 😎

Now around the campfire…they call me, “Lance-Lives-Wrong” 😏 😛 But they stopped talking garbage about “pedalling a bike around”…

      Late!

    • #69190

Yeah, you wouldn’t believe the grief I got from everyone I work with + friends upon them learning that I spent almost $9K on two [i:17d56uo0]bicycles[/i:17d56uo0]. There’s one guy I work with that needles me to no end because he spent about $4k on a really nice dirt-moto.

      Sheesh.

      😏

Alot. Video, I make comunity TV with a great group of friends, I program, REAL programming, not sissy web programming like trek. I listen to music, make music videos, and try to find time for my friends and girlfriend.

Based upon a couple of y’alls posts here, I decided to become a little more “emotionally invested” in cooking… haven’t gotten the hang of it yet, but you can marinate ANYTHING in beer, and it tastes twice as good.

      😼

    • #69195

Ah, so you wanna cook, aye?

      Try this!

      [u:2mwxzt3m]Ginger Chili-Chicken[/u:2mwxzt3m]

      3 boneless/skinless chicken breasts
      1 cup red wine vinegar
      1 cup distilled water
      1/2 cup e.v. olive oil
1/2 cup fresh ground ginger root
      6 tbsp honey
      2 tsp ground/flake red pepper
      1 pinch black pepper
      1 pinch salt
      1 can bamboo shoots
      1 can mandarin oranges

Combine all the ingredients except the bamboo shoots & mandarin oranges into a large mixing bowl, and mix well. Add the chicken breasts into the marinade, and refridgerate for a minimum of 12 hours.

Remove chicken from marinade, and cook all three in a large non-stick skillet. Flip the chicken about every two-four minutes until fully cooked. Spoon marinade over chicken every time you flip the chicken over.

Cover serving plates with the bamboo shoots evenly laid so they make a mat. Put the chicken onto the bamboo, and add a couple of slices of the mandarin orange to each piece.

      Hope you like spicy! 😼

Eh….. And that recipe is one of my more simple ones. 😏

Here’s another one, even more simple than the chicken.

      [u:1qy30md8]Mushroom Steak Sauvignion[/u:1qy30md8]

2 12 oz. Top Round steaks, fat/gristle trimmed off
1/2 bottle Cabernet Sauvignion red wine
1 cup Champignon mushrooms (the plain white ones), sliced
      1 pint heavy cream
      1 tsp black pepper
      1 tsp chopped fresh chives

Mix the wine and chives together. Drop the steaks in the wine and marinade in the fridge for at least 6-12 hours.

Then put the cream, mushrooms, and pepper into a medium saucepan, and cook on low (don’t boil!) until mushrooms are softened and start to shrink. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

Cook the steak as you like it, preferably in a skillet. Flip the steaks every 2-4 minutes until steak is done to preference.

Serve the steaks with several spoonfulls of the cream & mushroom sauce on them.

Mountain Biking is my second passion in life. My first would have to be whitewater rafting. There is nothing like going down class V rapids with waves gushing over the top of the raft and all of your buddies are screaming like little girls.

I don’t have any kids and I don’t plan on having any soon. After all i’m only 16.

Other than whitewater rafting and mountain biking I love everything else outdoors. Camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing and rock climbing are just a few of the other things that I love to do.

    • #69204

      Don’t forget about boulder-hopping and silo-jumping…. 😉 😃

Fitch! I LIKE IT!!! You guys rock! Sound like a cross between Rush and Tool! I’ll have this on my iPod soon!!!

    • #69210

Hey all – I’m enjoying the forums here! I’m not a good cook (as I’m sure my guy Jason could tell you! 😮 ), so I have no recipes to contribute! LOL

I am mom to three teens. Stephanie, Samantha, and Scott. Steph is 18 and super tied up with her guy, Samantha is into her friends and being a girly girl, so that leaves the boy and I to do all the fun stuff.

I’m into snowboarding, like it’s an obsession!!! I read about it when I’m not doing it and I’m planning trips that I hope to pull off before I’m 50. (I’m 37 so 40 is a bit close!) My guy Jason built me a full-suspensions mountain bike and got me into biking. In turn I pulled him into snowboarding! We go once a week during the season and ride a big ride at least once a week during MB season. (at least that it the plan each week but we’re both self-employed!)

Other stuff:… Hiking is fun! We’re going to do some backpacking this summer. So far our trips have had to be postponed (self-employed complications!).

My work is Real Estate so I’m either doing nothing or running my butt off!!!

My favorite trail so far is Rampart Resevoir – though I ride the trails off Mt Herman most because that is where my guy lives. (Palmer Lake).

My boy rides with me most times and since we homeschool we can pretty much go whenever the weather and time allow us to!

      Nice to meet ya’ll!!!
      Becki

    • #69211

I like to pick and flick! 😆 Ok seriously…I like to camp and fish, to go motorcycle riding both street and dirt. Snowboarding is the other big thing I do. I’ve been snowboarding and mtn. biking for 17 years and I have no reason to stop either one. There’s more stuff I like to do but these are the things I like to do most. It’s all about having fun! 😃

    • #69213

My wife and two daughters are my number one hobby. I just wish I could get them to go riding and snowboarding with me and I could enjoy my three best hobbies at the same time. Other things are anything outside that keeps me active, such as sports (soccer, football, golf), and on a lazy day I sit in front of this computer. I also enjoy a nice sunny day so I can sit outside and BBQ while drinking an ice cold beer with my kids running around in the back yard. Sundays are great for that!!

Hey TB, I think you’ll find that as far as online communities go, Singletracks.com has got some of the nicest guys the internet has to offer hanging around here! Everyone is full of kind words, information, and a love for the greatest sport on Earth!

Speaking of which, where’s the Bossman been?!?

    • #69216

I’m new to the sport myself. I just got my rig about 2 months ago and I have ridden almost every day since. I was an avid rock climber for 13 years but the new career and new family make that very difficult. It’s a lot easier to get up and ride for an hour before or after work. I have a baby boy who turns 1 on friday and I manage the national distribution for a french wine import company and before that I worked as a chef. So that sums me up: into good food, good wine, rock climbing, mtn biking, and of course my family.

    • #69217

      Hey T1,

I was WAY into bouldering when I started mountain biking, and it was tough to decide what to do on what day. But the balance aspect of climbing and having faith in my body certainly made me a better biker, especially now that I don’t climb anymore!

      Cheers!

Hi all, loving this thread!!! So it’s just my hubby and I, we have no kids but a very demanding cat and dog 😆 My husband and my brother-n-law got me into mtbiking about two years ago…..it has been a journey. I have never been an overly active person. I have always been scrawny. I have changed so much as I have within the past years……I HAVE muscles<—-first time EVER!!! 😃 I have never worked so hard, or hurt so bad! I truly LOVE this sport and this is important coming from a girl that 2 1/2 years ago the most important decision she made concerning fitness was if she wore sneakers would it ruin her pedi! I am now officially a BIKING chic!!! I love riding…..I also had an old starter bike at first until my hubby saw I was gonna stick with it (good idea) and now have a HARO flightline (hard tail) that I LOVE!!!!! I loved mtbiking so much the only prob was wet trails so my bro-n-law hooked me up with and old BCA hybrid bike and now I ride on the road when the trails are wet just so I can get in a ride! I love the new STRONG person I am, I love the feeling of bliss you get when it’s you and the trail, I love the high you get after that looooong climb. I LOVE it all!!!!! 😆 😆 😆 I’m hooked!
