Anybody out there have some insight on a good 3 bike trunk rack? There are so many out there and just as many positive and negative reviews of each. I was primarily looking at the Bones and the Thule racks. Thanks in advance for the help![/b]

Thanks. Hitch not an option as it’s a company car. What about the Bones rack? Have you any experience with it?

Thule or Yakima makes the best by far! I have both including a Yakima roof rack. If you can swing it, go with a hitch mount instead of a trunk mount. Good luck!

I’ll second that opinion for Yakima. I have both roof mount, on my wife’s van, and a King Joe for my car. I thought about getting the Q-Clips and towers for my car, as I much prefer the roof mount route but Yakima does not make them . . . yet 😢

The trunk mount rack recently developed a problem with the adjustment of angles. It’s kinda locked in one position. This is not major as I only use iton one car, but the rack is old enough I am considering replacing it. I’m also looking at he Saris, but I’m hesitant. I’ve had such good lock with the Yak.

i have the thule 2-bike trunk rack (and a thule 4-bike hitch rack). it’s very good once you get it set in a position that you like…ie, it doesn’t cover your license plate, bikes don’t hang too low, bikes don’t hang at angle so they’re not pushing against each other. i imagine a 3-bike trunk rack would have to be pretty robust, so i wouldn’t scrimp too much or you might be seeing them dangling in your rear view mirror someday (happened to me once on the highway in July!).

I have the Thule trunk 3 bike version and last week with my bike and my buddies on the back. As I was heading home from my ride I happen to look in the rear view mirror only to see his bike bouncing across 3 lanes of a major highway. Luckily it was early enough there were no cars behind me. After inspection I noticed that the one strap that was left had ripped. This is alarming because the rack is only 4-5 months old. I have not written to Thule yet, but I am taking a photo and writing about my dissatisfaction toward their product. Believe it or not the bike was not too bad. Had to replace seat post, seat and true up the front tire, otherwise it was pretty good. I don’t know if this is indicative to other Thule products, trunk racks in general or I just had a lemon.

Good point, mongoose. i forgot to mention that i use the long blue strap (it’s about 8 feet long) that came with my thule hitch rack to lash the bikes together when i use the trunk rack. i wrap it around the tires and put it through the frame of the two bikes. i think that sometimes the front wheels twist and essentially force the bikes off the rack. the strap helps tremendously.
