Trouble with SRAM x7 rear derailleur

      I am having trouble with my SRAM x7 rear derailleur w/x7 shifter not responding when I shift. Especially when I am shifting from the smallest cog (11) to the next one up (13). This is a 3×10 drive train. I tried the barrel adjuster on the shifter without much luck. It also intermittently won’t shift sometimes. I have to hit the shifter twice.

      I took it to my LBS and he noticed the hanger was bent a little. He bent it back (eyeballed it), and adjusted the b-adjust screw, and the barrel adjuster again. Everything seemed to move just fine when he was shifting it on the stand, but when I took it home and tried riding it again, the shifting was still sluggish. I have to hit the shifter twice to get it to shift from the smallest cog. Wondering if the hanger could still be bent a little? Any thoughts??? No, I didn’t take back to the bike shop. I was going to try to fix it myself this time.

      If your shop ‘eyeballed’ it and didn’t bother to get out the specific tool for checking and fixing a bent hanger .. well, you need a new shop.

      And yes, it could be still bent, or there could be something going on with the cable.

      Yeah…. After doing a little research on how to properly align the hanger and how precise that needs to be after I got home, I was not too impressed with the "eyeballing it" job…

      Eyeballing it is what you do beside the trail after a nasty crash. 😆

      Then you use the tool to do it right when you get home.

      Agreed on all accounts. There could be a whole bunch of problems really. I know this isn’t what you wanted to hear, but I’d take it to a reliable bike shop that (a) uses proper tools like a derailleur hanger alignment gauge and (b) [i:sjexs9jz]test rides your bike before giving it back[/i:sjexs9jz]. [That is just as unacceptable as eyeballing. Your shop should know things work differently in the stand than under your body.]

      I’d inspect the shift cable and housing. In fact just replace the cable and housing with a high quality set-up like Jaqwire. The cable could be frayed inside the housing or it could have a kink in it somewhere. Also I wouldn’t be too hard on the guy eyeballing it. The derailleur alignment tool uses your rim as a reference so the derailleur alignment is only as true as the wheel. I’ve found eyeballing it is pretty good. Check your cable.
