heading to north ga , both areas are us forestry land with trails , are all us gov land closed or just state parks? 💡

Just places with amenities that are FEDERAL parks, state parks are untouched as of yet. So basically if there is a gate you are screwed.

Which trails are you planning to ride in N Georgia specifically? Places like Bull Mountain (in National Forest) will be accessible but like musikron said, if there’s a gate attendant or it’s a National Park (like Sope Creek) it will be closed.

Most any federal owned place that requires maintenance (parking lots, trash cans,etc.) is closed.
In Virginia I think Roaring Run, Cascades, and Pandapas Pond areas are closed. Of course if you ride to the trailhead instead of driving you should be fine. 😀 -
Heaven forbid that anyone could use these parks for free! IMO, they should just close down the services, such as bathrooms. That is what they did here in California when they shut down our state parks for a month or two a year or so back.
I suppose they’re worried about trash and vandalism, etc, but it is just a shame to have those spots go to waste!

Basically what they’re doing is exactly that: closing anything that can be closed. But you can’t just shut down the national forests… The great thing about mountain biking is that gates are no problem!

I accidentally wrote in an earlier post that a Forest Ranger was volunteering his time to make life difficult for people to keep people out of Tsali Rec Area. I Did not mean to say that. I meant to say if he was volunteering his time to keep people out that leads me to believe there is a bit of spite there but i could be wrong. I apologize for the error and have deleted the post.
Two people I know told me he was blocking the parking lot and one rider told me he told him he was not being paid so no once would use the trails. If he made that statement and I say if…I will leave it to the readers to make the decision if he was just trying to make park patrons pissed. I met a couple of campers on Needmore road that said they were threatened with citations if they did not leave Tsali. I am going to swing by tomorrow to see if he is still there and find out the scoop on what is supposed to happen and if all Nantahala and Pisgah trails will be closed. I also heard that camping at Jackrabbit Mtn was closed but MTB Trails are open maybe because they are maintained by SABA and not park service but can’t confirm that and no answer at Nantahala Ranger Office.
When I say "Ranger" just slang for BLM LEO. I spoke with a non-LEO who was driving around in a F.S. vehicle on a F.S. road near Appalachian Trail who was "not getting paid." He said he was to report any violations he came across. However, he would not answer any questions I had about any more potential closings and said he did not have to answer questions because "he wasn’t working." A bit confusing I would say!
Let’s see peak fall colors just around the corner. Reduced tourism. Less revenue for the government. That about sounds like a good plan for the U.S. Economy.

Bear Creek and Pinhoti trails are open – no problems so far. Lake Conasauga and Bear Creek Campground are closed via gates blocking entrances. Some guests from Mulberry Gap were walking around the Lake on the day of the closure and were told to get in their truck and leave. The trails were very busy today and have heard of no issues. Mulberry Gap is privately owned and open for business.

The shutdown of the federal government has forced organizers of the Maverick Mountain Bike Championship to pull the plug on two of its three races this weekend.
The event, hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, also serves as the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling Conference Mountain Bike Championships.
The short track will be run Saturday on the university campus. But Saturday’s downhill and Sunday’s cross country had been scheduled to take place in the Bangs Canyon area, on Bureau of Land Management property. The university took the matter to federal court Friday, arguing that the special permits issued should be honored, but judge Marcia Krieger disagreed.

So i did some research, and forest service and blm law enforcement is still considered a mandatory position. How "rangers" fall into or out of that category, I’m not entirely sure.

You would think that with limited resources personnel would be better allocated. This is what I have been hearing (and experiencing) in WNC. The Pisgah Inn must be a real threat to the U.S. Gov’t! Be careful out there people someone is on a mission and will use you to make a statement. After all they are under orders from someone.

The government has not stopped collecting federal taxes. They just stopped giving you something in return for it. Ergo, you’re still paying for access to the trail systems.
I for one am enjoying the hell out of the shutdown. No need to weave through the Weeble Wobbles at the whitewater center to get from one trail to another. It’s been some of the most enjoyable riding I’ve had out there.

There was a group of riders that was turned away from the Right and Left loops by a armed USFS person that told them that if they accessed the trails that he would arrest them and it would be a 10k fine w/ 6 months imprisonment.I asked for a reference, but haven’t heard back yet.

Wow, that’s crazy!! I’ve heard some crazy things on the Bryson City Cycles FB page, but that’s nuts! Do you know if he’s there 24hrs a day?

There’s a thread on MTBR with people’s experiences that mirror the quote. It seems they’ve put an armed FS employee there to keep people from riding it. Nobody has mentioned any specific times he’s there.

Like Schwimm said in an earlier post, we are still all paying our taxes… What kills me is that the feds seem to be targeting items that are unnecessary to close for budgetary reasons, and they are just doing this to make us, the public, feel some kind of impact from the shutdown. Otherwise, the majority of the population would never know anything is happening!
Here is a similar story that pissed me off. Mount Vernon (G. Washington’s home) is funded by a private foundation and doesn’t receive federal funds. BUT, the parking lot for it is on federal property, keep in mind that the parking is free, and was shut down as part of the government closure!

I just got back from Moab on Sunday night, and we were frustrated that we couldn’t visit the national parks as we had planned. Also, we did hear first-hand that lodging cancellations were pouring in fast and furious.

Since part of the NFS and BLM lob is to lease the land to miners, loggers, cattlemen, etc. Are these suspended also? For some reason I doubt it.

You doubt quite correct! Perry Gap Road off Buck Creek Road in Clay County, NC they are still logging almost got run over today by big logging truck today. This was the same road that I encountered the volunteer from FS that was not being paid but in a FS vehicle that said he was going to report violations yesterday. I suppose equal protection under the law does not apply. Loggers paid big buck to the FS but campers, hikers, and bikers that don’t have the bucks are just 2nd class citizens. The FS can’t say the loggers had permits prior to this cause I know bike races that had permits or campers that already paid have been denied.

BOULDER, CO (BRAIN) — The International Mountain Bicycling Association joined other outdoor nonprofit advocacy groups and clubs in voicing its concern about the impact the federal shutdown is having on public land access.
In a letter sent to congressional leaders Monday night, the Outdoor Alliance—a coalition of five national membership groups—stated that the shutdown has negatively affected efforts to build and maintain trail systems on public lands; impacted revenue from mountain biking, whitewater kayak races and other activities that have been cancelled; and been demoralizing for outdoor enthusiasts who have planned and trained for months or years for once-in-a-lifetime trips only to be denied access to many of the national parks.
Making up the Outdoor Alliance are the Access Fund, American Canoe Association, American Whitewater, International Mountain Bicycling Association and the Winter Wildlands Alliance.
Collectively, the Alliance has members in all 50 states and a network of almost 1,100 local clubs and advocacy groups representing millions of outdoor enthusiasts who hike, paddle, climb, mountain bike, ski and snowshoe on public lands.
Directors of five other alpine and mountaineering clubs also signed the letter.
“From what we hear from our members, who cover the entire political spectrum, they are upset and they are angry,” the letter read. “Although we do not have any answer as to how to resolve the differences triggering the government shutdown, we know that as it relates to our public lands, the shutdown is having a very real social and economic impact on the American people,” the letter concluded.
