Trail 4 Shifting Issues

I own a 2015 Trail 4 and since purchased the bike (new) I have had problems with keeping the rear derailleur in tune. After having it worked on, it shifts great in the parking lot but once I take it out in the trails, the problems start up again. This a regular occurrence, pretty much during each ride. On rare occasions, it may make it to the next ride. The shop that I purchased it from has tried very hard to fix the problem. I have had other shops look into it as well with the same results. I have replaced, chains, cassettes, hangers, derailleurs, cable, covering, wheels, pretty much everything without change.
I am writing this in hope that some may of someone on this site might have run into this themselves and can make suggestions on a fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am at my wits end.

You should check the cable tension. I’ve had the same issue before; you throw it up on the stand and it’s dead on, including indexing and such, but once you get on it, it’s off. You want that cable tension taught. If there is any slack, it just increases under weight, stress, and especially during suspension. Get your indexing and all set, then make sure that cable is taught, after that, you can use the b-nut adjuster to tweak it in. Let us know if you have more issues. Take care.

      Hi there Russ,

You mention a problem but never tell us what it is exactly. For that reason, all responses will be vague general suggestions.

Does it shift slow? Click like it’s in between gears? Does the chain fall into the spokes? Fall off the smallest cog? Does the chain skip? There’s so many issues that you can have that’s related to the rear derailleur, we could waste hours of your time chasing something you’re not experiencing.

Tell us exactly what happens and if possible, take some detailed pictures of the derailleur from behind the bike. Take them while the chain is on both the biggest and smallest cog.

Been busy since I posted. The bike I got last October and have nothing but issues with shifting after trying everything I could. After reading the responses I started getting pictures of the bike and just got so frustrated, I stopped and went back to the bike shop where I bought it to discuss the problem. They asked me to bring the bike down, which I did and left with them. They were going to see what the could do. Well last Wednesday I got a call from them and was told the following… I spoke with the manufacture and they offered a new replacement. They didn’t have the same bike in my size, so the offered to replace it with a bike of the type but up two steps. I just needed my approval. Well as you can guess, im waiting for my bike with a smile. A big thanks to the bike shop and manufacturer.

That’s pretty great news for you man. New bikes in lieu of adjustments would be a welcome surprise 😀
