HEY EVERYONE, IM NEW TO THE SPORT OF MOUNTAIN BIKING. I JUST PURCHASED THE GIANT XTC 29ER 2 ON 3-5-10. I HAVE BEEN RIDING MAINLY ON THE STREET JUST TO GET A GOOD FEEL OF THE BIKE AND THE COMPONENTS BEFOR HITING THE TRAILS. HERES MY PROBLEM… I HAVE ALREADY HAD 2 REAR FLATS! THE FIRST FLAT I REPLACED THE TUBE WITH A SLIME TUBE, BUT OBVIOUSLY THAT DIDNT HELP. THE BIKE CAME WITH THE KENDA TIRES ON IT, SORRY DONT KNOW WHAT MODEL KENDAS, BUT I THINK THEY ARE JUNK!!! TO GET 2 FLATS IN LESS THAN A WEEK ON PAVED ROADS THATS CRAP. ANYWAYS IM 6’1" 215 LBS AND HAVE HAD 50 LBS IN THE TIRES. I WANT TO GET RID OF THE KENDAS AND GET SOMETHING THAT WONT LET A BLADE OF GRASS GO THROUGH IT!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS PLEASE LET ME KNOW CUZ IM TIRED OF WALKING THE BIKE HOME WITH A FLAT! THANKS

Why are you yelling at us?!?! 😢 j/k 😀

Seriously though, two flats on [i:xmo14s8m]pavement[/i:xmo14s8m] in one week isn’t normal. Are you hitting potholes or curbs to make it flat or just picking up nails and glass? If it’s potholes and curbs, adjust your riding style to make yourself a little lighter on the bike over bumps. Also, you may want to feel around the inside of your tire (the side that touches the tube) and see if there is anything poking through that will cause a flat. Sometimes you’ll pick up a thorn or a rock that you don’t see from the outside of the tire and it’ll cause future flats. You may want to take a look at the tubes when you replace them to see if it’s a typical puncture or two matching holes (what peope call a snake bite) which is more indicative of a pinch flat.

Thanks for the tips but the first flat I took it to the bike shop and had them put a new tube in. they flipped the tire inside out and looked for any thorns but none was found. Both flats have been tiny pin holes from thorns or stickers I would have to say cuz I avoid any pot holes as best I can but I do jump off curbs and speed bumps and little stuff like that but that’s not when the flats happen. In my opinion I think the kenda karma l3r pro 29*1.9 are just a very thin tire that has no puncture resistance. Like I said I’m new to this sport but as a kid riding bmx bikes I never got a flat. I’m just worried that if I’m getting flats on the road what is going to happen when I’m rolling over sticks and rocks and other stuff! I don’t know I’m stuck what should I do or what tires should I put on?

You should try a kevlar liner, that might stop your problems. No tire is impervious to thorns, or other things that can poke through.

Yea I thought about some sort of liner at first but I thought their might be a better tire that might be thicker or maybe they make some kind of kevlar lined tire built in or something

hey man… try this link…i would not buy any from here (only cuz iv never seen em b4) but its a list of some 29" tires that come from good companies and are not really thin as you said.

whoops i just fixed my post above….i was supposed to be would NOT….just to clarify

Thinner tires, in my opinion, are a product of many racers desire to lighten their bikes as much as possible. I agree that Kenda makes some of the best tires on the market. I think one of the best all around tires, that are tough, do great in mudd and slick conditions are the Kenda Tomac Nevegals. They make it in 29er as well.

The Karma is a light weight XC race tire. It is pretty thin. It’s supposedly a great tire, but I haven’t tried one yet.

The Nevegal is a tougher tire…but also heavier, and it will roll a LOT slower than the Karma.

      TKM29er,

Where do you live? Like what state, Country, or major city nearby? It will helps us figure out what terrain you ride and help us with tire suggestions etc.
