😃 With the great connection between craft beer and mountain biking,I figured I’d see what our responsible trail users like to drink after a ride,how they pack it in and out on long rides,and really anything else relating to the great trails and brews of the world.
In the last year I have diversified my interest in beer from just Newcastle,to mostly local craft brews recently. A friend and I will usually take a few with us for after the ride but since bottles seem to be a bit of a pain to deal with,I’ve recently been looking for canned beer and thinking of ways to pack it a short way into the woods.
So far,I’ve really liked Cigar City’s Jai Alai as a good IPA after a ride,but have not come up with a great way to bring it along. I’m considering one of those tube style coolers but have never actually used one or tried to ride with it,seems like it may be a bad idea.

I’ve heard that Dale’s Pale Ale is a great beer (comes in cans), but it isn’t sold around us. New Belgium’s Shift Lager comes in a can, and is pretty intricate and very tasty for a lager, you’d be surprised. As for quality IPA in a can, I had Threadless’s IPA at a restaurant a couple of weeks ago, and that was served in a can.

I feel like the issue would be keeping the cans from getting shook up?

It is really hard to find but Flying Dog is now canning some of their brews.

Actually, I haven’t found it to be a big issue. We drink beer out on the trails all the time. Usually at the top of the climb, though, so maybe it doesn’t really get shaken up unless you do a long, rough downhill?

Y’all who drink DURING a ride are nuts. Post-ride… oh yeah. We pack chairs and cooler in the back of the car to relax with one or two cold ones post-ride.
In New England, there’s a lot of support for craft and locals, like Harpoon (big supporters of NEMBA). Drinking local is always a good thing!
Personally, I like something dark or I dare say hoppy when done riding. I normally don’t like IPAs, but a super-crisp cold beer is very refreshing after 2 hours of trails. And the high ABV is always fun.
– Pack two camping chairs in the trunk
– Fill a camping cooler full of ice packs and six very cold bottles.
– Ride hard, rack bikes, change shirt
– Set up chairs, disperse beer
– Drink responsibly in the parking lot without causing a scene while talking about how awesome biking is
– Repeat next weekend! -
The only issue with drinking AFTER a ride is then you have to get behind the wheel and drive home. But if you drink DURING the ride, the buzz is worn off by the time you’re back to the trailhead 😀

I’m with Fitch, I don’t drink while riding. I’m cool with just water during the ride. If I have a cold one after, I prefer a Dos XX, wait, wrong commercial..I like something light, like a lager or an ale. I can’t get it out here in CA, but back in my home in NY, I would drink Saranac, which does make some of their beers in cans.

Oskar Blues, maker of Dales Pale Ale opened a brewery in Brevard, NC I’m told.

Oskar Blues is distributed here,Dale’s Pale ale being the most common but I noticed they make a Deviant Dales IPA that I have yet to try.Their Old Chub Scottish Ale is pretty good.That’s cool they opened up another brewery!
As far as shook up beer,if I rode with it onto the trail I’d have to let then sit for a few before opening but they should settle down just fine.They go through hell on the truck on the way to the store,haha.
I was wondering about Flying Dog the other day,for some reason I don’t see their beers around here anymore.
I’m all about drinking local beer,but it’s hard to get a growler out on the trail so until later this summer when our local Swamp Head Brewery starts to can their beers,I’ve been hunting others.
Avery,Oskar Blues,and Cigar City are the most common around here.
I’m not too much for drinking during a ride but if I have any intended maintenance to do,I may take a couple for that,other than that,I just hang out on a log at the top of the drop I built after the ride. 😎 I actually want to put in a bench for that purpose. For bottled beer,I would take it to the end ride spot,before the ride,but you run the risk of other thirsty bikers finding it,haha.

I will say there is nothing wrong with having a beer on the trail if you are responsible. Used to ski a lot in New England and had one or two while skiing. What is the difference? Both high speed sports and if you ski in the glades, very close to trees. How about when out for dinner and you drive home?

New Belgium, Dales, Magic Hat, 21st Amendment are all great examples. If you prefer Bud, Coors, or another fine with me. As long as you are responsible I am fine with it.

I actually remember seeing that picture on here a few years ago and loved the idea of pizza and beer during a ride but I have yet to do it,it’s just been the beer so far but I’ll fix that soon 😃 All the talk of Oskar Blues,I will have to check out a few more of their offerings this weekend on my longer Saturday ride.

Oskar Blues really does make some good stuff. I’m not really a Dale’s Pale fan, but Deviant Dale’s once in awhile really hits the spot, and as mentioned, the Old Chub Scotch Ale is a stellar Scotch ale. That’ll put some hair on yer chest, laddy!
One of my favorite parts of riding in VT is that there are so many local breweries, especially Trout River. They’re not far from Kingdom Trails, and the restaurant on site has some great pizzas. In fact… to tie it all together after a day on the trails and supporting my favorite website (note the t-shirt)…

Try a boddington it’s like Guinness comes in a can. You guys must be in a different state in Ma. some stuffy would call the cops and you’d get busted for open container.

Growler Time!! That’s awesome Fitch and if I ever see any of their brews,I’ll surely give them a try! What did you fill that growler with? We have an odd law here in Florida where we can’t buy half gallon growlers,but gallons and quarts are fine,…leave it to Florida!!
I picked up a Dale’s Pale Ale to give it a try but I’m mostly not a pale ale fan either. I also picked up a Deviant Dale’s and a 6 of Old Chub.

Boddington’s is pretty good,as well as Wexfords Irish Ale,which is usually real close by on the shelf here.

A few weeks ago,one of the local groups of women MTB’rs bought a couple growlers from the local brewery to give away as prizes at one of their events. I thought that was a very cool prize! 😃

For those of you in GA, Terrapin Brewing currently has a cycle related event going on but also is doing a race May 25th for their first beer in a can,Recreation Ale. It’s called the Recreation Ale Flatrock Challenge and it’s in Dacula at Harbins Park.

Greatest beer in the world is Bell’s Two Hearted. It’s an IPA with 7% alcohol with a hint of a grapefruit after taste. Brewed in Comstock Michigan. This is how I know God loves me.

I’m an IPA guy myself, and don’t really feel that an IPA should be drank out of a can. An IPA needs to be ice cold and served in a chilled glass. On the other hand, if I gotta pick a can of beer to take on a ride, it has got to be Oskar Blues TEN FIDY. It’s an imperal stout (with the consistancy of motor oil) with flavors of chocolate, caramel, coffee, and oats. Just make sure you save it for after the ride. One can offers a ABV of 10.5%. So, its not just a clever name! In this area it is a seasonal beer and can be hard to come by. I stock up when I can from a local "craft-beer" store. A 4 pack runs about $16.00, but well worth the price.

+1 on Bell’s Two Hearted. I have the trout logo sticker on my waterbottle. Right beside my Left Hand Milk Stout sticker! All this beer talk makes me wish I wasn’t at work!

I have tried many beers from all over the world… Have paid as much as $10 for a bottle of IPA and have enjoyed many a great beer. You may call me crazy but a year ago I tried a new beer and loved the flavor and quick buzz from it. I haven’t wanted anything else since. That beer is the extremely inexpensive Keystone Ice. 😃

One of my favorite post ride beers in the can form is the Happy Camper IPA from Santa Fe Brewing. yummmmmmmm I just might go get a 6er right now while i watch the snow fall! -

Beer Thread!!! Nice.. I’m in Huntsville AL .. Been really enjoying 2 or 3 particular Brewers over the last couple months, perfect for an after ride beverage. Just about anything I try from SweetWater Brewery (ATL GA) but my staple is their 420. And I really like Good Peoples (Birmingham AL) IPA. Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale is currently a favorite of mine as well.
