March 7, 2014 at 08:39 #124249The final production version of the X01 DH cassette is designed with ratios and gear spacing optimized for downhill applications. On the X01 DH 7-speed cassette the range is 10-24 tooth, with two tooth steps on each shift, which can mean less shifting, more pedaling and less time spent decreasing pedal power to allow shifting. Effectively this means less shifting could mean more speed.

That’s interesting. It seems almost like they can’t sell enough 10 speed setups, so they are reverting to "different" drivetrain?

Heh, I thought that was interesting too. We’ve gone all the way up to 11 speeds, all in one-speed increments, and now it’s "too many shifts" so they’re dropping back down to 7 for DH? Sure, tech in the rear derailleurs and chain retention is drastically improved… but part of me thinks they’re just trying to find something else to sell 😀

I guess the whole idea really is about loosing weight on the bike, with the loss of those larger gears which frankly are never used, you also loose on rotational mass.
