Some people have mentioned they’d be interested in buying singletracks-branded cycling socks so we contacted Sock Guy to see what’s up.
Basically we need to order a minimum of 120 pairs of custom Sock Guy socks and based on the production cost we would need to charge around $8-$9 per pair. A quick internet search reveals that most stores charge around $7-$12 a pair for bike socks so the pricing seems reasonable.
Now, the question is, how many pairs will you buy? I’m thinking we could offer quantity discounts such that the first pair is $9, each additional pair is $6 if that helps at all. Your unofficial pre-orders will help guide our decision so holler if you want singletracks socks!

I’ll take two pair. 😃

At $9 and then $6, two for $15 not bad. Are you using the standard Single Tracks graphics? What color sock?
Not that it really matters, 😄 Iíll take two tooÖ

Yeah, I’m thinkin the logo wrapped around the top cuff of the sock and then probably a dark color for the bottom (black or dark green?).
Here’s the Sock Guy "template" to give you an idea:

I can always use a few more pairs of socks…Count me in for 2-3 pairs.

I’d be down for two pairs!

I’d take a couple of pairs…

Alright y’all, Sock Guy is on board and we’ve narrowed the designs down to 4 contenders. Hollah for the ones you like!
Sock #1 – Old standard
Sock #2 – Peeking logo
Sock #3 – Logo band
Sock #4 – Edgy, no visible logo -

I like #1 because I am all about brand recognition.

Thanks for your input RemfSS but where’s everyone else?
I hear the brand recognition thang, though the first sock was probably my least favorite. I modified the colors a bit and I’m much more satisfied with this version, what do y’all think?
The red toe is my lone attempt at spicing the design up – no one will know it’s there but you

I like this one even better. In fact, during the post ride, after you slip off your shoes and put on your sandals, everyone is going to know you have red toes and they will be able to associate the emblem with Singletracks.
I am sure others will chime in soon.

I like the new design and the black is nice around the emblem. The only thing I don’t really like is the red toe but that is inside of the shoe, so it really doesn’t matter. 😀

I’d have to say I like #1 or #3. Probably #1 would be my pick.

I like the 4th best, anyway to get the logo added up higher into the wire?
-
May 23, 2007 at 05:18 #70240
I like #1 also and I wouldn’t mind a red toe.
How about the logo on one side, and "Singletracks" starting on the other side and wrapping around the back? Possible? what I mean is just have "Singletracks <LOGO>" wrapped around the top.
Eh, whatever. I’ll take 3 pair regardless of what you decide. 😃

I really like the new sock design, plus I like the #3 & #4 designs too… But as long as it’s a Singletrack’s sock, and it’s a low-top, I’ll buy a couple pairs. Just let me know how and when. 😎

My vote is for #1 with the spicy red toe…just another suggestion if you’d like to add to it.
Go with the Brand Logo #1 and have the text "SINGLETRACKS" wrap from the front of the logo around the ankle(inside) and completes the wrap by ending at the back of the logo back on the outside of the ankle.
I’ll get two…I’ll also spread the link on the local club websites. If socks sales go well – when do we start desiging a jersey?!?! (Ha…You opened up this can-o-worms 😉 )

Good to hear at least SOMEONE likes the spicy red toe
The tough thing about designing socks is that they need to be symmetrical since there isn’t usually a "left" and "right" sock (unlike shoes). Plus the stitching resolution ain’t great so designs with fine detail (including our fairly simple logo) may come out looking chunky.
Thanks for everyone’s input, we’ll finalize the design this weekend and hopefullly we’ll have some socks within a month or so…

Ha…you are giving a guarantee that the hidden red toe will give our legs a jumpstart when they turn to noodles…right?!? That’s why I voted for it – I need every bit of voodoo I can get.
Totally understand on the text issues – you have to admit, that would look cool though…being on the inside, you’d always have people staring at your ankles trying to figure out what it says.

In case you missed the email last week, socks are on the way and if you pre-order you can save on multiple pairs:

If you missed the saga of the singletracks socks let me catch you up quickly:
We had some cycling socks made over the summer (see photo below) and just as they went on sale the socks disappeared during our move to Atlanta. Only a few folks were able to order and actually receive the socks making them rare items indeed.
Now we’re thinking of re-ordering the socks but we need your input! A number of folks on here said they’d order socks but didn’t end up doing so. That’s cool but we just want to make sure it wasn’t because you thought the final design sucked. Yeah, the colors aren’t quite what we imagined (the Sock Guy colors are somewhat limited) but overall [i:34913cak]we[/i:34913cak] think they turned out great (I even wear mine when I’m not biking).
If you think the socks ended up sucking, what could we change to make them gnarly? If the design stays the same, will you order them this time? Let us know what you think…

I have 4 pair and have nearly worn them out
Yes, I’d order some more, but only if they were different colors or something. Like if you changed them to blue and yellow or something like that….
(well, maybe not blue and yellow…but some other combo…?)

How about Orange and Blue?

I bought two pair of the original order and gave one pair to a buddy of mine since he was flip-flopping between just two pair in his wardrobe – I’d hate for him to ride with a funked out unwashed sock and lose a toe or something. Plus…I figured it would get the logo out there on the trail even more.
This idea may sound foo-foo, but it may sell more socks in the next round: I’d suggest taking a look in some bike catalogs and find some of the more popular primary colors of the riding gear. This might ensure that people may buy more assuming they have the similar color ridegear available currently on the market. You’d also be piggy-backing off the footwork(pardon the pun! 😆 ) other retailers have already done trying to figure out what colors sell.
Any chance of Singletracks jersey/riding shirts, riding shorts, and sweatshirts in the near future?

I think if Jeff did that, he’d have to take some very specific pre-paid orders. That could get expensive for him to try and maintain stock on that stuff if there’s no guarantee that he’ll sell it. Even with the socks, he said that he didn’t get as many orders as expected.
I like your other idea, though. 😀

EZ-E, you make a great point that folks like to match their riding outfits (tough as it may be to admit for dudes). With that in mind, my current thinking is that neutrals (black, grey, white) might work best. In fact I have a pair of the IMBA socks that are black and grey and they are probably my favorite pair because they look good with everything.

Hey Jeff, long time no talk! I’ve been out of it this past summer/fall, but 2008 will bring about much biking and much Singletracks.com for me!
I’ll be honest in that I was barely aware socks were available to order, but I’d definitely pick up at least one pair of those, if not 2. I’ve got two pairs of riding socks and would love to have those on my tootsies! 😆
