Here is my plan for a 2 week road trip. Would like suggestions on "must stops" and what to ride where I am already going. Start in Colorado Springs- Fruita- Arches Nat Park- Moab- Durango- Telluride- Gunnison/Crested Butte. This will be a summer trip because of the altitude/weather. I live in the Springs, so do not plan on riding there for this trip. Anyone with knowledge of the Wasatch trail in Telluride, please put your input on that trail. This will be my first long trip for Mtb and want to prepare for a great trip. I have not ridden in any of these spots, but ride several times a week and feel comfortable on any level of trail. 2 bikes- Remedy 8 w/upgrades and a Session 9.9. Thank you!

Please also include a great bike shop in these towns if you know one.

I haven’t ridden the Wasatch in Telluride–still on my bucket list–but I know it’s a monster. Steep, technical, huge climb topping out at over 13K ft and a big descent with plenty of exposure. Make sure you’re up to the task!

Looks like you’ll probably be passing through Cortez at some point (best route from Durango to Telluride). Be sure not to miss Phil’s World.

Shops on your path which have done me well in the past:
      Gunnison: Tomichi Cycles
      Durango: 2nd Ave Sports
      Fruita: Over the Edge Sports
      Moab: Poison Spider
      Cortez: Kokopelli Bike and Board

Moab and Fruita can be vicious hot in the summer. Start early, bring plenty of water, and try to be off the trails by noon.

Thanks Skibum, Bike shops are a big help. Will add Phil’s World!
Forgot to mention I will be traveling alone, so if anyone in these areas wants to ride or show me a trail they love, hit me up. Would really like to have someone join me for the Wasatch Trail!

Hey, gdb49, did you ever end up doing this? I have a free week in August to do whatever I want with and was thinking of doing the Fruita-Crested Butte route. Just wondering if you had any insight into a good itinerary. Leaving from the Denver area.

Looks like it’s going to be this fall, did not get out in time to beat the heat. You can’t go wrong with CB, but Fruita in August is rough! Stay in the high country in mid summer. CB/Gunnison easily has a week of riding and you can hit a town on the way out and one on the way back-Buena Vista, Salida, Vail/Eagle or bring your DH bike and hit Keystone.

Hey Lindsey, sorry it took me a while to respond, but I did a lot of research and would be happy to fill you in on some great rides. Message me and I’ll send you my number and give you a run down on the list of trails. Greg

John, Would you like to hit the Wasatch trail together- it would be nice not to be solo for that one!

      Greg,
Would love to if I can get away–and re-up my fitness a bit–between work and the rains, I haven’t put much time in on the bike for the last month. August is probably out–September may have some promise.

I was all lined up to hit the Wasatch Trail in September of 2010, but we got rained out the entire weekend. Telluride is gorgeous, but the high country can get quite cold when it’s that damp!
