It looks like I will be spending some time at one of my company’s offices in Hunt Valley (Cockysville) and wanted to know where else is a good place to ride (if any others) other than Sweet Air. I found that one but haven’t hit it yet being down here this time only for a night (and travelling with the Boss Man).

I will be back in a few weeks and the office seems to clear out at 5PM punctually so it looks like I could go back to the hotel and watch porn or go mountain biking.

Any other recommendations would be much appreciated.

Hey. I like all the gunpowder trails. My favorite would prob be the little gunpowder one right off harford RD. There is also a pretty good one with alot of downhill in Kingsville. Hit me up if you ever want to go. I’m always looking to for someone to go with…

I hope to be back down in a couple of weeks. Probably going to bring the Monster Crosser for an up and back on the NCR and then want to hit Sweet Air, and some of the Gunpowders. The irony is back in the early 90s I was stationed at APG and used to used all these trails for fishing.

The trails around here now are really muddy so its kinda hard to ride them with all this rain we’ve been having. I love the NCR I rode it with a few friends awhile back. Its a lot of fun. Also I have been meaning to hit up the sweet air trail. I hear it’s really nice. I always see people fishing at the big gunpowder. Do people really catch anything in there?? It looks so polluted haha

Used to catch some really nice trout in the Little and Big Gunpowder falls. Not sure about today, though, but they sound like they are still good trout fisheries. I am sure downstream where they open up into the bay they could be bad.

what type of terrain should i expect at gunpowder? Also what trails do you guys recommend? I usually ride places like rosaryville and lochraven, but i was looking for a place to really get into with my cyclocross bike, and also more timid terrain to get the gf into trail riding. I haven’t heard too much about these areas from riders, but hikers seem to like it. I’m not sure if theres a lot of detail in the trail listings on the site, but i should look i guess 😃

Speaking of Loch Raven, can somebody describe what you can and cannot ride? Is there a dual track/fire road that circumnavigates the reservoir that is open to riding and all the single track is closed?

      savetheraven.com

from what i understand the woods roads (the fire road i believe) is officially open but the the singletrack is questionable right now. I hear people are still riding and the rangers are informing but not ticketing. Seems to be in discussion right now.

What is the surface of the dual track/fire road like? Could you ride it with a Cyclocross Bike or are fatter tires more of the prerequisite?

I just rode the fire roads on my skinny cx tires this weekend. Its doable but just not fun. Its rocky and eroded and didn’t offer me enough fun to make it worthwhile for me. I couldnt really bomb down any of the hills in any sort of enjoyable control, didnt really want to wreck my bike either. I might not have been warmed up enough but i just couldnt get into it. Hopefully the single track doesn’t get removed, because those sections are a blast. I think ill give the fireroads another go on the Full suspension and see if i get a different vantage point. So if youre in the mood for a bumpy and rocky ride the fire roads would be a good fit for you.

I just rode some of the Gwyns falls trails during the Tour Dem Parks Hon Ride and thats a nice trail system, still trying to figure out if all the sections are safe but i thought it had a nice sampling of road, hills and some dirt sections. I’m definitely interested in finding out more information about them as well.

LR Fire Roads can be ridden on a cx bike as long as you go in expecting a rough ride. You’ll hit some rocky & rooty but rideable sections. As posted, the LR single track is offically off limits (as well as some fire rds) and DPW rangers may inform you of this. Check savetheraven.com or more-mtb.org for the most up to date info. There is limited riding off of the Big Gunpowder at Rt 1, and better riding along the little Gunpowder from Rt 1 or Harford Rd. Little Gunpowder from Belair rd heading west may be ok on a cx if you stay on the low sections – I haven’t tried it, so can’t say for sure. The best local mtb riding is down at Patapsco SP imo (Avalon & Hilton areas). York PA also has a nice trail system at the Lakes about 30 minutes N of Hunt Valley off 83. Check out more-mtb.org for rides & trails around Baltimore, Frederick & DC/VA. Check yamba.org for York area trails & DE Trail Spinners for great rides up at White Clay & Fairhill (1 hr N of 695 up 95).

Well, headset was shot on the singlespeed so I didn’t bring it down with me. Just brought the Monster Crosser and rode the NCR from Monkton to PA and back, this evening. That was fun. 50 minutes up and 30 back!

Next time I come down, I will be be bringing the mountain bike and plan on hitting Sweet Air.
