Hi, I have decided to replace my small and large chainrings with a set of BBG bashguards. I have screws like these on my chainrings (The photo isn’t my property) : https://www.flickr.com/photos/dno1967b/ … otostream/ . They are very shallow and I cant find the right tool to unscrew them 😢 . Can I get some advice on what I can use to take them off so I could install Bashguards? 😉 Could i t even be possible that they are actually rivets? Also I have a 2013 Specialized Hardrock Disc 26"

Looks like rivets to me. I’d ride it till time to replace this drivetrain and then upgrade to something with bashguard. My friend had similar crank on his Hardrock and rode about 2000 miles before it wore out completely.

Agree looks like rivots go to bike island grab a set of take off cranks cheap and set it up the way you want or just wear out and replace as suggested. Last time I checked they had some FSA cranks 35.00 free ship new bb 25.00 chain 20.00 done!

I’ve always been puzzled by removing a big ring to install a bashguard, especially on a 3x setup. In what way does the big ring not function as a bashguard for the smaller rings? Mine certainly does.

Bashguard has one important benefit over third chainring – it improves clearance for your bike. If it’s not crucial then no point investing into unnecessary parts

Dan about your replacing your 3ring with a bash guard yes better ground clearance also they are thicker then the chain wheel so they will hold up better

Yep those are rivets and I do not think that particular crank can be serviceable. Consider replacing your crank with one that is easily serviceable. Maybe a good used one?

Looking at the picture, that crankset has a built in bashguard. It is a pretty old school setup though, so I don’t disagree with getting something new or decent used. If it will work in that bottom bracket…
