Rear derailleur hitting cassette

I am fully aware of how to adjust my rear derailleur but my derailleur hits my cassette when I am in granny (lowest) gear whether I am on my center chain ring or my smallest. I have the adjustment screw all the way in. Is there something I am missing? Do the springs that keep chain tension go bad? Are those springs replaceable?

That’s one possibility, but there’s also a screw that adjusts how close your derailleur sits to your cassette. I’d check that first.

That’s the one I have adjusted all the way in. I forgot this is a Shimano Deore 9 speed derailleur

Yes, the springs should be replaceable, but you should be able to pick up a 9-spd XT model for pretty cheap these days.

Has this derailleur been unistalled and reinstalled since this issue arose?

If the base plate of the derailleur (held into place by a "C" clip around the mouting screw) that retains the spring that is inside the mounting base is not sprung and locked into place by the little bent over tab on the side of this plate against the nipple on the side of the derailleurs base then that adjustment will not do anything and it will appear like the spring could be broken.

I know that’s a bit confusing, but it’s hard to explain without being able to point it out.

      Aha,
I haven’t reinstalled the derailleur but that would explain why the adjusting screw doesn’t seem to do anything. I will chack that out. Thanks JacksPerson

Cool, I’m glad you understood that.. I almost don’t and I wrote it.
If it has popped out of place its kind of a bitch to get back into place.

      Glad to help

I figured this out. The cable housing that connected to the rear derailleur was limiting the slip of cable. So when I shifted to the larger ring it moved enough to shift gears but it didn’t move enough for the derailleur to pivot up so that it didn’t hit the cassette. Hope this makes sense to somebody with A. 😃 D.D.
