What are you eating people? And for what kind of ride?

Carbs? High protiens? Steak and Eggs? Shark?

      Talk to me Goose.

    • #74408

Shark??? Never heard of that. I alway like to eat light, but loaded with carbs. Also I always try to stick something in there with protein. I like eat two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (carbs and protein) With that I make sure there is plenty peanut butter on it to. Big cup of orange juice to. On the way to the trail I like to pick up a gatorade to drink on the way. With the PB&J I also eat two bananas. They help with potassium (helps prevent cramps). That may seem alot to you (maybe) but I am 280 LBS and 6′-2". So I need a bit more than the average person.

      That’s what I do.

    • #74409

Whenever I will be riding over ten miles I eat a pb&j sandwich and a banana. I am also hooked on Sobe No Fear Sugar Free energy drinks and I always have one of those before any morning ride. If I drink one in the evening I would not sleep.

I’ve loaded up on both carbs and proteins and had great success with both, pasta and steak was a lethal combo at one point…of course, I was living with my folks and had nothing better to do than plan my next ride!
Anybody using these "gel" packs in mid-ride? Helpful? Placebo? What.

    • #74411

Seldom worry about a pre-ride meal. Just eat my normal daily food and keep hydrated. I alway have a granola bar or snickers in my camel pack in case I need a snack on the trail.

However if I plan on doing a 30 mile or longer ride I might resort to a good breakfast of eggs, meat and hashbrowns with plent of coffee/oj to wash it down. Works for me for long day hikes or a day on the slopes. Should work for mt. biking.

Most of my rides are between 10-20 miles currently.

    • #74412

Usually a couple of bagels and some OJ before, water during…and Im with Goose a Lemon-Lime Gatorade at the car and a cold beer at the house 😃

    • #74413

I am pretty boring, but I prefer pasta and red sauce before a ride. Ill even eat it first thing in the morning if the ride is early in the day. Definitely some caffeine as well. I like to ride on an empty stomach for the most part, so eating is usually finished at least a couple of hours before a ride. Leading up to the ride I hydrate with plain old water.

I am not a huge proponent of snacking on the trail, I read somewhere that is takes a few hours to gain actual energy from snacks, so they seem pretty useless if you ride is shorter than that if the goal is to gain energy from them. The exception to that was those gel products or some others that are designed to be quickly converted to energy. I usually have a snack with me on a long ride, or a ride that takes a couple of hours to drive too. This is just to stave of hunger during the ride, not really to gain energy. Works for me, and makes the post-ride Mexican Food even more to look forward too.

with that kind of eats the only ride would be staying home till after the bathroom ride aint nothing worse then having to #2 in the woods. 😆

i guess for me i would have to consume a mix of slow and fast digesting carbs to last for the long ride and a double dose of protien shake cause without the protien the body will destroy muscle to find energy.

      That sounds about right.

So in order to get the best out of eating anything, you should probably only eat if you plan on riding more than a solid hour, because your body can actually use the energy from your everyday eats (normal breakfast, lunch, snacks and such). If you plan on doing something hard core, or just a long ride that’s like 5 hours it’s definitely best to eat some carbs, I personally like to eat tons of fruit along with my peanut butter toast. I’ll down a protein shake or something either way before when I first wake up, or when I first eat. And lastly, If I want to snack on something before/during I’ll take trail mix because I’m on the trails!

And of course, drinking tons of water that I’m almost a damn sponge. Even though that’s not really "pre-ride eats"

    • #74416

Hi Im new to the forum but I have been racing and eating for fairly long time. 😀 I try to include plenty of carbs pre ride with some fat to keep your body feeling full. then follow up post ride with carbs and a small amount of protein… the carbs post ride are importain to be consumed right after work out to restore your glycogen stores. take care and happy riding

    • #74417

Before any ride I eat food. Whatever’s handy, I don’t really get too fussy.

Immediately before a ride, I scarf a Gu, Hammer gel or Jelly Belly sport beans though.

    • #74418

I always have eggs and toast before a ride, then a protein drink on the way over to the trials and some GU during. After I have another protein drink and a PB& J to refuel.

    • #74419

If any of you ride with kids, stock up on Jelly Belly Sport beans. They taste just like candy, but are "real" energy food.

    • #74420

In addition to jelly beans I carry hammer gel and clif shot bloks.

Gu is ok if it’s all I can find.

Clif bars are ok in a pinch.
Most other things are just nasty.

😃 Nothing but cheeseburgers and fries!! 😃

      Just kidding! Ha!Ha! 😆

      Though I do love shark!

I love lots of carbs before a hard ride, but I stay away from the proteins. Way overrated! But of course a couple of good beers to finish the days ride.[/quote:1bevmhtx]
😆 We always celebrate surviving a ride with a victory beer, then celebrate the victory beer with a victory beer, and so on…

    • #74423

The morning of a ride, I get either a sausage, egg and cheese McGriddle at McD’s or a breakfast burrito at 7-11…it depends on which way i’m going.

Either way it’s accompanied by a small coffee.

Once I hit the trail it’s energy gels, sport beans, clif shot bloks, water and poweraide.

The night before the ride I usually drink 4-6 beers and a few handfuls of Virginia peanuts. In the morning, I eat a Clif bar and wash it down with a couple cups of coffee. That usually gets me moving, if you know what I mean, and I think you do. Don’t want to mess with bowels on the trail. Then I drink water while I ride and usually have a Clif Mojo or some peanut butter crackers in the pack so I don’t starve to death. Now that I think about it, I should really write a mountain biking diet book. I could make millions.

I usually eat a Cliff Bar or a ProBar and plenty of water or a Propel to drink while out on the trail.

    • #74427

2 PB & Js, and / or Egg Mcmuffins depending on how early I get out. I keep a cliff bar or two and diluted propel or Gatorate on the trail. Cold Gatorade waiting in the car upon return.

No coffee. never coffee anywhere near ridetime.

    • #74428

I usually don’t pay much attention on shorter rides (~10 mi). I usually carry PB&Js, snickers, and trail mix for epic rides (20+ mi). Anything in-between I usually just carry a granola or clif bar just so I don’t bonk.

    • #74429

Usually lots of water the night before. In the morning I eat light. A banana is always good and maybe a Clif bar or Zone bar to fill the stomach. Plenty of Gatorade during the ride as well as the ride home.

    • #74430

For a normal 2 hr ride I’m a big fan of homemade smoothies an hour or so prior. I usually microwave a cup or more of quaker oatmeal. Two tablespoons of natural Peanut Butter. A couple cups of milk and blend together with a cup or two of frozen berries. I might add ice if the mixture is too wet or I’ll add water/milk if it’s too thick. I refrigerate what I don’t drink. I don’t know what serving size I actually have but whatever is left over I normally re blend after I get back and add a tbsp of whey powder to it for an after ride snack. I also make sure I drink plenty of water before, and during the ride.

As an alternative I also like eggs and toast an hour or so before a ride if I don’t feel like a smoothie. Add lots of Cholula. And drink a lot of water. 😎

      Sorry for the Hi-Jack.

Yeah, I was REALLY lucky that day. Arizona, been misting rain for a week and the trail was soft (for AZ). I wouldn’t have been riding but it was a race (I’m not competitive I just race for fun). The photog got the whole sequence. I wouldn’t have figured it was that bad until I saw the pics. I’ve been hurt worse just falling off the bike trying to dismount!

      Take Care

    • #74433

chocolates and a lot of gatorade… lol

    • #74434

After yesterday’s 17 mile ride on just a bowl of mini wheat I felt like crap allday.Oatmeal, toast is my choice.I’ll know better next time. 😳

    • #74435

If I’m riding in the morning (6 days a week) I will eat one hard boiled egg, two scrambled eggs, some hash browns, a piece of toast, some granola and some fresh fruit, and if it’s the summer, some iced coffee. If it’s in the afternoon I don’t really eat anything special, maybe some granola if I’m hungry before I leave.
On longer rides I like to bring a few granola bars, some mint gum (to alleviate nausea) and some cliff energy gel (which tastes like salty strawberry jelly).

    • #74436

Such a variety of responses. It just goes to show everying have different physiology. Everyone has different goals. I ride to drop weight and loose body fat at the moment.

I eat balanced all day. Circut train in the morning with weights/plymetrics/kalestenics. Ride in the afternoon.

Pre-ride I drink muscle milk and a few slices of oranges 20 minuts before go time. I ride 16-20 miles or so and take Power Bites to keep myself from bonking. Basically, I reduce my carb intake except post my workout. That is the best and appropriate time to refuel the carbo store since capillaries are empty-depending how many calories I burned.

Other pre-ride eats I’ve used with amazaing success – yogurt parfait (granola, fruit, yo-gut) It has alot of simple carbs then a dash of complex carbs and protien. The closer I am to my ride time, the more I eat things that are quickly assimilated into the bloodstream like PB&J w/bannas-which seems really popular and for good reason.

    • #74437

If it’s going to be a [i:1sket8at]real [/i:1sket8at]ride (2+ hours), I eat big and healthy – some type of protein and some type of carbs. I find a good burrito to be great at lunch if I know I’m riding after work, and I’ll normally get some type of basic sugars in there, too.

Tons of water before riding, normally some coffee, and a protein shake. I keep a few GUs in the CamelBak in case I get low, but I never plan on it. I’d rather eat before and not take the time off the bike to scarf food!

Post ride: carbo load with something that comes in sixes. 😀

This will be different for every person, though – no two peoples’ metabolism is the same. I’m 190, 5’11", and pretty fit (mountain biking, weight lifting, and drumming), so my caloric needs may differ from yours.

    • #74440

      Very soon after… 😃

    • #74441

      Long Rides (12 miles +)
-1 packet oatmeal mixed w/ craisins
-2 scrambled eggs (w/ 1 gallon of cholula hot sauce)
      -1 glass orange juice
      -1 banana
      -1,000,000 gallons of water

      Short Rides (8-12 miles)
-anything that’s in the fridge or chick-fil-a (not that chick-fil-a makes any sense for breakfast)

    • #74442

Always poop before the ride to avoid the feared Hammerhead T**d. 😄 Later,

Personally, I like riding early morning. Just after breakfast. However, since I cannot eat heavy and ride comfortably, I try just getting some carbs and proteins (little or no fat). However, I fuel up the evening before, and I drink a carb + bcaa drink during the ride. Afterwards, I go on a see-food diet :p No, but seriously, afterwards I eat a good meal since otherwise I will be snacking all afternoon.

Whenever I ride early afternoon, I eat a good breakfast and small lunch, and eat heavier when I get back. carb+bcaa during the ride drink always stays. When I ride late afternoon, my lunch and dinner will be the heavy meals.

Of course, all of the above only holds for real rides (50 km or 30+ with heavy climbs)

PS: Whenever I need to drive home again and have >1h before I can really eat after the ride, I’ll pop some carbs and a protein shake ride after the ride. I feel the proteins really make a differences in muscle recovery

My Pre-ride and during grub is always my fav. and thats the infamous Elvis special, aka PtripleB ya know Peanut Butter and Bannana Bitches!!!! thick layer of P.B. on wheat with slices of bannana layered on top. (get a tupperware container the size of sliced bread and deep enough for 2 sandwiches = no squish) couple that with 1-2 protien bars (don’t care which ones) enroute and plenty of water. Post ride? Everything in the damn fridge I have stupid high metabolism…it’s a blessing and a curse
