So I was flipping through some NAHBS pics this morning and came across this USB port top cap that is powered by dynamo hubs:
Having never heard of dynamo hubs before, I did some google research and found that they are a front hub that generates a current while the wheel is rolling.
Interesting…
Stravaholics rejoice.

Woa this is pretty cool!

Thats awesome! I wonder how strong the hubs will be and what they will weigh having some sort of generator/stator in them?

Well after a little googling: Supposedly this technology has been around since the 1920s! Now that I think of it, I remember my grandpa telling me all about his Schwinn (had to be back in the 50s, late 40s) that had a headlight…must have used these hubs.
SRAM even makes some pretty sweet looking dynamo hubs:
I guess the hub/power generator idea is an old tech that nobody knows about and the stem/usb charger is new school.

I’m picturing one of those old school head lamp generators that would run along the brake surface of the rim! Cool idea though!

I thought those where supposed to run against the tire, not the rim?

Yeah, you’re right. Been a long time since I’ve seen one of those!

While awesome for keeping the GPS logging smartphone going, imagine what you could do with lights and night riding? Never have to worry about batteries dieing on you, or whether you can go for one more loop around that loop area. Even if the generator just slows the battery drain down, it might be worth it.
Any mention of 15QR skewer compatibility?
Lights are one of next year’s purchases, and adding something like this would be kinda cool. Use this to help keep a pair of decent bar mounted lights operating at peak light output, so that I don’t have to worry about the helmet mounted spot light would be a nice option.

One of my buddies has a generator hub on his Surly Big Dummy which he takes on night MTB rides sometimes (though he mostly uses it for commuting). You can basically build up any wheel with a generator hub–29er, 650b, whatever–and power all your devices!

Freakin awesome. What type of power connector does he have between the hub and the accessories? -

I don’t know… He has one of those lights systems that some dude made for him so he’s always connecting and disconnecting wires during the ride. 😀 Nothing as elegant as USB for sure!

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! 😆
Okay, found a hub generator made by Nukeproof. Disk brake, and 15QR capable. So, looks like I found the source for the front tubeless setup. That hub, coupled with a tubeless wheel, and all the other bells and whistles to go with it.
