Just keeping the forum fresh so you don’t go through 6 pages to see the latest bike. Here’s my bike, took my life savings to get it…
I’ve added fenders for riding around the neighborhood in rain (I’m 15 and this is my primary/only transport!) and much mud, scratches, duck tape, and new tires and grips there’s my bike. -
June 2, 2007 at 15:58 #70438
Not a bad start, bro. 😎
It’s awesome you spent your savings on that Fuel instead of wasting it on a car.
I wish I had stuck with bikes when I turned 16 instead of blowing my cash on a car that just ended up making me more broke…. It helped with the ladies, but I rapidly found out that girls who will only date a guy because he’s got a car ain’t worth spit. And I never lived far enough away from my jobs that I [u:okd65j30]needed[/u:okd65j30] a car.
Now all you need to do is find a girl that loves to ride, and everything will be right with the world. 😼
My wife and I use those same fenders, they’ll keep your frame nice & pretty too. I dig that color blue that Trek & Fisher uses.[/u] -

Here is my ALL in one bike it’s my main transport bike to go to work everyday and with a tire change it’s a XC machine… It’s mostly stock… My next upgrade will be a pair of avid SD7 to replace my generic Vbrakes
-
June 15, 2007 at 17:45 #70440
Why not get BB7s? Those hubs look like they can mount rotors.
-
June 15, 2007 at 22:05 #70441
they do but a set of sd7 with Ti levelers is 80$ shipped + low maintenance + i do XC and road so no need for $$$ disc brakes here if i would do a lot of XC with DH then maybe… Anyways the SD7 are as good as a mechanical disc brake…

Here is my noble steed. Her name is Carla. I’ve always loved bikes and whatnot, but this was my first real big investment into it (comparing with Wal-Mart bikes, etc.) The only things I don’t like is the crank and the rims. The crank wobbles after a few hard rides and the rims are no-name and they have bent easily on me. 😢
-
August 13, 2007 at 19:07 #70443
Look for a set of Alex rims. They’re lightweight, but have stood up to a lot of abuse when I had them. Find out what your bottom bracket shell size is, and get a new BB w/ crankset. Bottom brackets are cheap, and a set of Truvativ FireX cranks are a good start.
Also, you might want to go with a 100mm stem w/ no rise, that stem you’ve got is a cheapo touring setup, and a different stem will turn your bike into a totally different experience. Switch to some clip-in pedals, and you’ll be set! 😃 -
August 16, 2007 at 16:58 #70444
Handlebars and a stem are next on my list. I might be paranoid but I’m wondering if my bars are slightly bent now. I took a nasty fall a few weeks back. What would you recommend other than just 100 mm? What sort of brand, etc?

I am still a Clydesdale I was 238 at the docs but I had big lunch before that.
the reason I was at the docs is because there is something up with me. I can’t lose weight, unless I get food poisoning 😮. But at least I am not gaining any tho. But thats thanks to 100 to 250 miles a week of riding on none race weeks. 😛 I can’t cut anymore calories or I would not be able to function.
I got a race tomorrow, my class has to do three laps for a grand total of 30 miles, and it is going to hot out.And the trail is pretty muddy. I think I got a chance of winning it. You may be talking to the future USAC Michigan State Champ Clydesdale.

Just picked this puppy up at free flite in Marietta Georgia. Haven’t hit the trails with it but man its been fun doing a little urban riding with it. Have nothing bad to say about it!
Oh, and the guys at free flite are simply awesome! Michelle and Travis were great to work with and very accommodating. It was worth the 1000 mile round day trip. You guys really need to do something about 75 between Macon and Adel though, thats just ridiculous in the rain..😀

Here are my two rides:
08 Trek 4300 and 07 Trek Fuel EX6.
I just recently picked up the Fuel, and I love it. I keep the HT for the road riding I do occasionally, and use the FS when I ride out in Alafia, Santos, etc. I plan on heading west in May, so the FS is going with me. Moab and Fruita should be comfy with the Fuel. -

There seems to be a lot of bikes in this price range, $22- 2500, almost too many choices, High end bikes w/low end components or low end bikes w/high end compnents, this model seemed to have decent frame and components for the $ spent.
Myself after having a couple bikes want to get back to the VPP style rear suspension and I want adjustable forks- no more of the ‘one tension fits all riders regardless of their weight’ front ends for me. So really, the FOX components, frame style and the Canondale name has me sold, in the price range Im looking at. -

After 21 years I’ve decided to retire my Specialized Stumpjumper Comp and buy a Full suspension ride.
Due to availability I’ve decided on a Haro Extreme X6 Comp. So far Im very pleased with it. The transition from a rigid to full suspension ride was a little bit more difficult than I expected but after a few rides the Haro has swayed me.

Thx Steve.
I’m happy with the new Bike. The Marzocchi 55RS shocks seem too soft, my 220lbs sitting flat sinks her almost 3 inches. All in all a very solid rig though. The hydraulic brakes are simply fantastic. My brake points have been drastically reduced. I’m still tweaking the shocks but the more I ride the closer I can get to a perfect setup.

Dude, that bike is freakin awsome. It just screams the roots of mtn. biking, and I cant believe you’ve been riding that thing for 21 years. You need a medal. When I bought my 07′ stumpjumper, one of the biggest reasons I picked it was because the front and rear suspension could be locked out so I can ride it like rigid on the trails and then have some suspension for the downhill stuff so I can have the best of both worlds.I dont even use my suspension on technical sections.I have been planning on building a rigid specific bike but cant quite come up with money just yet.
You’ll have to review your two bikes with all the details of the differences from your experiences making the change from rigid to full susser.Pretty please????hahaha.p.s….Hold onto that bike and dont sell it,but if you do please let me know before you do.

Hey Mitch,
What is your sag?
If you have 25%-28% sag, then you have the correct spring, then you just need to boost compression. If your sag is higher than stated, get new spring. I think that they only make one spring for this shock, but not quite sure bro.[/quote:3ctez74d]
Hi Mongoose,
Getting info on these Marzochi shocks has been difficult to say the least. How would I boost compression? I only have a single adjustment for rebound. Stronger springs I would guess is my only option but I can;t find anything about upgrading the stock springs. Anyone have any other ideas?
The Fox Van R rear shock works perfectly.

I don’t think I ever posted a pic of my rebuilt Liquid.
Originally just wanted an updated drivetrain.
Had fun rebuilding her and got carried away.
Ended up replacing everything but the seatpost clamp.
Murphy decided he wanted to be in the pic from the side.
Rebuilt with a full XT drivetrain and Ritchey cockpit.
A 145mm Nixon with 20mm through axle finishes the steering.
Swapped out the old brakes for some BB7s and put some flashy new Wind Cutter rotors on it.
Thomson seatpost and WTB Rocket V saddle keep the rump right.
Pictured with my beater set of "freeride" wheels. -

Ok, here’s my new ride that I just put into service this spring.
I bought the frame from a local guy via ebay, and then spent the rest of the winter tracking down components.(Yes, I’ve since removed the yellow sticker)
And not to forget the old hardtail I started on:

Nice rig and the home made all grain brewing system look great. Did you weld the stand yourself? Been brewing since the 90’s, won some awards too. Noticed the bottles off to the left. I only keg except for competition. What did you brew.

yeah crazy huh, i had a 05 specialized enduro and got in to a accident and the frame got tweaked pretty bad, i was going to get a 09 enduro until i saw that freedrive system on the mongoose and went out for a demo and it felt better to me than the fsr link from specialized so i got the mongoose and havent looked back 😃

Sorry for the late reply.
It was ok for a first bike, but i had gotten the itch for full suspension and stopped riding it toward the end of the summer after replacing pretty much everything on it.
I would say the best thing i did to it was get rid of the crappy fork. Stuck a Fox F100 RL on it couldn’t believe the difference. Even though it wasn’t G2, i thought it still handled good, probably better.

I have already started gutting it. I changed out the wheelset, added Avid BB7’s and just upgraded the Suntour fork to the Rock Shox Tora SL that comes on the Tassajara. I’m looking at a full replacement of the drivetrain after this upcoming season. I think it’s a great bike for a hardtail and will be even better once I finish upgrading the stock componetry. I’m not sure when or if I will go for a full suspension rig. I’m going to try out some XC races this summer and see how they go.
Thanks for the reply. BTW what are you riding now?

Is that an ’06 Nixon on your ride Chili?
-
February 15, 2010 at 19:04 #70521
They are awesome forks! Have the ’06 Super Intrinsic version on one of my bikes and love it. Was thinking about opening her up just to see what makes her tick even though I have never had a problem with her in 3 years of riding. They really do take anything you throw at them and simply smile and ask for more.
-
February 15, 2010 at 19:31 #70522
No. I think the SPV was only available on TPC versions. The Intrinsics use an air cartridge that ramps up at the end of the forks travel and gives it a smooth feel on bigger hits.
Originally bought the fork with the intentions of doing more FR but never really got into that style that much. Still love it as an aggresive trail fork. Really soaks up rocks and makes you [i:195jfvkm]want[/i:195jfvkm] to get airborne.

My ’08 Dawg after my last ride of the ’09 season (mid-November, here in VT)
Currently, she’s all apart on my workstand/bench getting refurbed and getting some trick new components for the ’10 season! Goal for this season is sub-30 pounds (currently around 32.)
My first full-susser (and second Kona). So far I love it….it was close to three times what I’ve ever spent on a bike before.

Thanks! It’s really one of the best "do-it-all" bikes I’ve ever ridden. Climbs like a monkey, descends like a bat-outta-hell, and I’ve hucked it off a few good kickers and drops and it’s never complained (other than tacoing a front wheel on a botched soft landing). It may not be the most sophisticated design, or the lightest/strongest, but it’s chock full o’ fun, which is what I like.
And SwampCobra, it’s a trifecta…I agree that color combo is sick!

was thinking of getting some, is it easy to ride them not clipped in? i love the efficiency of the clip but sometimes they are just far to dangerous to be locked in…

FBTrek321: ChiliPepper nailed it….the Mallet is a really good pedal. It’s easy to get in and out of (especially on a bail), and is pretty grippy to ride on without being clipped in. Sheds mud easily too.

Love that Yeti! I almost ended up on a 575 instead of this one-
An ‘08 Tomac Snyper 140-1
Still mostly stock other than the Joplin seat post, a new set of Race Face XC cranks/ rings/ bottom bracket, and a ‘heavy duty cause you ride like an animal’ (according to Tomac) replacement swingarm.
I picked up a 2.35 Kenda Blue Groove tire from the rep a couple weeks ago that is just a grippin SOB!
Note there are thorns on everything here! Am so tired of flats, am running slime tubes now which help but will be switching over to Stans Notubes if I stay in the area.

Thought i’d share a little nastalgia with ya’ll, this here is my friendly commuter.
Not sure on the year so if anybody has and idea im open to suggestion.
As far as i know from what my boss told me (cause he gave it to me) it’s from late 90’s ( 97-99 )
or early 2000’s.
Gary Fisher Advance (not sure if thats the model but thats what it says on the top tube) 21 speed
shimano DT, GF switchbax tires, not sure of the rims, the only thing i changed out is the seat Schwinn comfort seat for commute. I will be swapping tires to some city slickers for less rolling resistance…
-
May 19, 2010 at 09:56 #70554
Looks more like early 90’s to me.
This is my ’91 Trek 830 Antelope, which I converted to a commuter when my grandpa gave it to me. I was only 5 when he bought the bike, he still had the owners manual and even the receipt! These pics are before I changed anything, aka, it’s pimp stock. The frame looks pretty similar to yours, especially the drop outs.
-
May 19, 2010 at 10:50 #70555
hey Buddah, i think your bike is a some where between 90-95, Gary Fisher quit making the Advance for a few years and brought it back in 2003 i think, all the newer models from 03 till now have a suspension fork on them.
-
May 19, 2010 at 10:56 #70556
If the fisher has push/push shifters, it is a 1991.
That is the only year Shimano made those. Kinda looks like they may be push/push
-
May 19, 2010 at 20:38 #70557
Actually now that you menton the shifters, i changed those out cus they stop working within the first 3 days of ridiing due in part it not being used in 10 years. First one was the front and i got stuck riding home in the small ring and rode to work the next day like that so i can take the bike to the shop. Rear one busted 2 days later. The bike was only used 5-6 times tops cus my boss is a 77year old roadie at heart so he never got into the MTB scene. The og shifters i think were push/push, if by push/push you mean they were both thumb action to shift then yes. The shifters i have on there now are both shimano but they are not the same, one was 10$ and the other was free courtesy of my LBS and they installed at no charge. The other things i’m considering adding is better grips, clipless pedals and i think i mentioned tires.
Hey dgaddis,
thanks for sharing you bike, it is also a nice bike love the blue color. They do look very much alike… -

I changed my user name recently because a friend and I were listening to songs on my phone as we rode some trails. Skynyrd’s version was playing and I thought that would be a cool name rather than use my own. I’ve always heard Skynyrd’s and Claptons’s cover of the song and thanks to youtube I can go back to the originals too. I like to listen to Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Jimmie Rodgers, etc. every now and then, good stuff!

Like I said, Salsa El Kaboing frame, Fox 120 fork with RP2 rear shock. Gravity Light cranks/rings, XT cassette, XTR front and rear derailleurs and shifters, CR mag brakes, Control Tech carbon post, WTB Pure saddle, Sunline V1 stem, Crank Bros flat bars, Candy 3 pedals, Crossmax ST wheels with Conti Mountain King tires, errr, that’s about all the important bits…
Nice looking rig. And I love the name. How does it ride?[/quote:2pdluoyj]
It rides very solidly, nice and light so climbs well too. I do not notice pedal bob much at all, and if I do the Pro Pedal smooths it out well. Tracks predictably, great in the chunky stuff we have a lot of here, and overall I am extremely pleased.

That’s a good looking bike, I had an ’06 Anthem and loved it, and Anthem X’s are even better. My next mtn bike will likely be an Anthem X29.

This is a 2009 giant anthem X1 frame. I got it from a friend for a killer price and i built it up myself.
For drivetrain: Shimano SLX cranks (22-36-bash) and shifters, XT front der. and XTR rear der.

It’s just some ski socks. Pretty cool because they match my shirt which matches the bike. Yeah man, it was pretty dam COLD. I think the high while we were out there was like 48 degrees F. I had my underarmour shirt and gloves on. I love warm gloves!

I think the site limits the size of pics you can store to about 5-8 mb. If you’r existing pic is too big for that and you want to store it on singletracks.com you’ll have to save a less detailed version of it to fit in the smaller size limit.

Damn bro, very sick ride you got there! 😄 How does it handle on the dirt and urban/street? I recently just got a 20Forty DJ/trail/street bike and like you said, it feels like being a kid again. I have been riding that more than my main steed.
I have actually been looking into getting one like the one you posted, so thats why i am asking bro.
Thanks dude! It feels just like a 20" bmx, just a little heavier. There is a lot of bike to pull up off the ground when bunny hopping and I haven’t been able to get it up in a manual yet. I’ve only done some smaller back yard dirt jumps but it jumps really well. For me being a big guy, it is more steady and is a lot more controllable than a 20".
If you get one, plan on buying a saddle with it…it came with a plastic seat and it beat the hell out of my legs and I have some massive bruises.
I rode it to run some errands the other night…damn what a workout! 😆

Here are a few edited images of my most recent acquisition from Nashbar. I love the GT feel, aggressive, light on the rear end so overcooking a corner ends up in a controlled drift rather than a front washout. I havent been riding much since my last bike (a $#!T 1995 Trek 930) was stolen a few months ago. This is much better. It pays to have insurance folks! Having waay too much fun. Using MTB as a way to better fitness. It is working…rather painfully

Here’s my new bike, just finished building it last night. It’ll be used mostly for long rides/races and days I go to the mountains. I’ll still mostly ride my single speed locally.
Only ‘new’ parts are the frame, headset, and seat post clamp; everything is either something I got to test for Singletracks or is left over from my old geared 26" bike. I’ll be making some upgrades/changes later, but it’s ready to rock as it is for now. I didn’t like the stock paint, it was rough, felt like 220 grit sandpaper. So I stripped it down to bare aluminum and had a local painter apply a urethane matte clear coat. Looks sweet!
First ride will be tomorrow night, then I’ll be attempting a 9hr solo race on it Saturday. Trial by fire baby! 😼
FRAME: On-One Scandal, custom matte clear
FORK: Fox F29 Terralogic, 100mm
WHEELS: WTB LaserDisc Trail
BRAKES: Avid Elixer R
STEM: Easton EA30
BARS: Easton EA30
SEATPOST: Salsa (borrowed till my Thomson shows up)
SEATPOST CLAMP: Hope, quick release
SADDLE: WTB Rocket V
PEDALS: Crankbrothers Candy 3
GRIPS: Ergon…forget which model, has magnesium bar ends
SHIFTER: SRAM Attack gripshift
DERAILLEURS: Shimano XT
CRANKS: Shimano XT
CASSETTE: SRAM PG-990
CHAIN: SRAM PC-990 Hollowpin (I think that’s the number…maybe not, can’t remember)
REAR TIRE: Specialized Fast Trak
FRONT TIRE: WTB Weirwolf LT
WEIGHT: just north of 26lbs
Future upgrades/changes will easily drop over a pound from the weight. 😃 -

This is my Mountain Bike;
This bike almost didn’t happen.
Here is the story,i went to walmart about a year ago with around $200 and got what i thought would be a nice bike, well one day i went to my local bike shop to see if i could get some accessories for it like a front and back light,a trunk, etc. Well while i was inside i had my bike in there bike stand the (front tire) outside, well there must have been some wind cause when i came out the bike was on its side,i was about to leave when i noticed the front tire was bent like a egg shape 😠 ,if it wasn’t for the bike shop guy fixing it for free i would of had to walk about 6 miles. Well after that i went home asked my father to take me back and the bike back to walmart and got my money back,After that i went back to Curt’s Cyclery and took the $200 and put it down on the bike above, within about 2 or 3 months i had a nice bike finally 😃 😃 😃So far the bike is great,i’m happy with it.
I ride it pretty much everywhere,on the road and on the trails at Jacobsburg State Park in Nazareth,Pa. -

One thing you might try for trail riding, if possible, is removing the rear rack and bag. That’s a nice set up for commuting, but it could skew the geometry/handling a bit, especially depending on the weight. If you can ride the trails without that while you build your bike handling skills and endurance, it might help.

Yea i plan too,i took that on the trails and almost lost my bike lock, some how the zipper opened on the trunk and my bike lock went flying out of the trunk lol. Just need to find a decent back pack that isn’t heavy so i can put my phone and stuff in it. Also i did take the trunk off once cause i needed to clean it and wow what a difference on weight,it felt like a feather.

My husband and I just stepped up our mtb game a bit with some new FS bikes this year. We both agreed going to the gym for an hour 3+ times a week is pretty boring compared to getting outside to enjoy nature! And aside from running, this is a far better cardio workout than anything the gym has provided for us.
Here’s mine. Trek Fuel ex8 WSD.
After much deliberation he also felt the Trek Fuel ex8 was right for him too 😀

Hey dgaddis,

How do you figure 3/4 of a pound?
Before I had the geared bike I converted the SS to 1×9 for a specific race (Fools Gold). Added an XT rear derailleur, the top end 9spd SRAM cassette, right SRAM Attack gripshifter, and a bashguard and NGear Jump Stop. All of that added only a pound of weight.
Going from 3×9 to 1×9 would mean losing the front shifter and derailleur, big and little ring, and adding a chainguide. I don’t see 3/4 of a pound there…maybe it is, but I doubt it.
I built it up 9spd because that’s what I had laying around left over from my Anthem. I wanted to spend as little cash as possible building it up, so that’s why I didn’t get an all new 10spd system.
I’ve done the 1x thing before and don’t really care for it. The front shifter and derailleur add a little bit of weight, but a whole lot of additional gearing range. Plus there’s all the issues with dropped or thrown chains.
The Scandal isn’t really a race bike for me…it’s a go-anywhere kinda bike. So I like having that big gearing range, especially the low gears.
-
June 28, 2011 at 08:56 #70650
Okay I thought it said that it was your new race bike in the post. Nevermind 😳
I went from 2×9 to 1×9 and lost a half a pound after I put on the MRP mini g2 chain guide. Which weighs like 250 grams.
Also, don’t forget about a shorter chain with the 1×9 and then a short cage derailleur.
-
June 28, 2011 at 09:07 #70651
No worries dozzer 😃
How much weight you lose is effected by what stuff you take off too. If you’re removing lower end components you’ll drop more weight than if you removed higher end gear.
I’m pretty happy with the Scandal right now. Decently light for what it is and how much money I put into it, weighs 26.08lbs. There’s still lots of places to lose weight if I had some $$ to throw around 😆

My Bike is a 2003 Trek Liquid 10. I’d hardly call it a 10 version since a lot of the parts have been replaced. Rims, Grips, Tires, Handlebars, Front Forks, Pedals, Seat, etc. Graphics are custom – I was surprised Trek went cheap and just did vinyl graphics rather then painting their brand on the bike. Fine by me I pulled off all the boring art and slapped my own on. I guess a lot of bike mfgs are probably going this route if Trek started doing this in 03. I’d like to dump that LX rear derailer next it works poorly.

They have been on my Nomad for 2.5 seasons now. They are a stiff wheel with very decent engagement and hold their trueness very well. No problems with the bearings or rear hub (as others have had in the past with their Cobalt model). Only damage so far are 2 smallish dents in the rear rim (even with the dents I’m still having no problem running tubeless) and one broken spoke after my hanger broken and my mech went into the spokes.

upgraded cassette
upgraded bottom bracket
WTB Pure V saddle
Stans Tubless setup
Odi / Troy Lee Designs Lock On Grips
Geax Saguaro TNT tires
Easton EA70 Monkeybar Handlebar
swapped out the Giant Sport stem for a more aggressive one. Not sure on the model, but the colors sure do match!I really want to swap out the shitty Sram X4 setup and at least get a 3×9 or 2×10, then probably replace the disc brakes. Pretty much waiting on it to totally go. I would definitely swap out that fork! Taking off that boat anchor SR Suntour fork shaved 2 pounds off. Its a great bike to upgrade the geometry is almost identical to the XTC 29ers, but yahhh really shitty components. Just upgrade as they break, that’s what I did.

My2 new rides for 2012
Top is the Santa Cruz V10 I just completed building and the lower is my Banshee Amp.
V10C comes in at 31.5lbs to get it there required me to exchange all the bolts to Ti and now running Easton Havoc DH wheels.
The Banshee Amp comes int at 23.2lbs, I can still bring it down maybe 1.5lbs more but I gotta see where I can save weight without compromising strength.

Say brother, can you spare a dime? Nah, but I got a Nickel! A 2012 Santa Cruz Nickel to be exact.
I just took delivery this week. It’s my first full-suspension bike and I am pretty dang excited. Unfortunately, I still haven’t ridden it yet. I have some tweaking left to do, and I am having one issue that I posted about here: viewtopic.php?f=96&t=7382&p=42640#p42640

This is Bianca, my 2018 Giant Trance 2. I rekindled my love of mountain biking after 3 years off. I previously had a 2003 Giant Rainer hardtail so my upgrade needed to be full suspension all mountain, on sale. $2200 for this bad girl and I was in! Now I can ride for the foreseeable future on a bike that can handle everything. Saddle up boys!
